Movie Mindset 06 - Real Authorized Official Clint Eastwood: 80’s Clint feat. John Semley

Will & Hesse are joined by journalist and author John Semley to discuss two films featuring Clint in hardcore 80’s cop-vigilante mode: 1983’s Sudden Impact and 1984’s Tightrope. Both directed or partially directed by Clint, while maybe not his best, are certainly a lot of fun and very revealing of the various psycho-sexual underpinnings of the whole “go ahead, make my day” mindset. Plus, John takes us through the online drama ripping apart the Clint pic-posting community.

NEXT WEEK: Two by modern horror maestro Kiyoshi Kurosawa - 1997’s Cure & 2003’s Bright Future.

Lalo Schifrin also did the sound track to Mission Impossible (the series) as was a TV mentor and hero to Peter Gould. Hence why there is a character in Better Call Saul, and during Jimmy's final scam the needle drop is "Jim on the Move" also from the Mission Impossible latin jazz inspired sound track.

Eamon Short

I"m a big 'J. Edgar' fan y'all should go deep on it one day

JD

Great episode, thank you. John was hysterical, loved how he could barely get through explaining the Clint twitter accounts without cracking up

Erik

Have developed a better appreciation for Clint in the last few yeara

Maouriceltic

As a New Orleans native I will say that Wes constantly wearing saints shit is quite accurate. I know an infinite amount of dudes that do that to this day so it’s a nice touch

Ohn Jorazio

SO GOOD this episode gave me new insights on a body of work I know fairly well. this miniseries kicks so much ass!

Sharilyn Neidhardt

Do I have to see Dirty Harry 2-3 before Sudden Impact? I watched Tightrope last night

J.P. McD.

I need more Semley in my life.

Rimbo Jackson

Lalo rocks

Matt Lavallee

Hey, for those that have only heard about his movie music, some real Lalo Schifrin: https://youtu.be/R56RW1xDBn8

NoPrefect

Make semley a regular! He’s great

Jake Creighton

My parents happened to be staying at the same hotel in New Orleans as Eastwood during the filming of Tight Rope, and they glimpsed him at the gym tightening those beautiful buttcheeks.

Julie Baxter

Do Robert Altman's "The Player" you cowards!

Robert Sayre

Idea for bonus ep: Will, Hesse, and John all doing their Clint impressions at each other for an hour à la the E1 three Bidens episode.

Matthew Krueger

Yeah but there wouldn't have been any tension in the movie

Jimmy McMillan

Great podcast. I'm ashamed to admit that I'm way to dumb to follow the Hell on Earth series. This is way more up my alley

Jimmy McMillan

A handcuff for fetishing women

Kin

Tightrope was so fuckin good! Wes Block just wants to fuck everyone, and everyone wants to fuck him! John was so good too, great show and great guests so far.

Zach G

the commentary on Clint being into that gay stuff in the Tightrope discussion reminded me of the first Hesse pod I ever heard which was the Seeking Derangements episode about Cruising, extremely good in case anyone hasn't heard it

Declan Kennedy

Long live Clyde

Jonathan lees

If you’re listening to both Chapo & pod save america, maybe refill your lithium rx

Dan

yeah you're right it's been more than 6 months that a big legacy media didn't post a longread article about the podcast scene. Holden accountable levels are plummetting

etienne

Posted on Clint Eastwood and my birthday!

Gabrielle Chase

They don't and it's time someone called that out too.

buttface

Chapo has the most insanely butthurt fans of any podcast. Worse than Pod Save America.

buttface

albert popwell is in all of the dirty harry movies

Declan Hertel

just to make sure: it's noo-yen right?

etienne

Yeah, hearing Seeking Derangements really made me like her.

ploob

she was also on Chapo when they talked about Matt Schlapp

George P

this is like complaining that cheetos dont have the same crunch as they used to

dawood

I love Hesse <3

Nicole Veneto

CRANK 2: HIGH VOLTAGE

Adam Geddes

ButtFace

ploob

Okay, sounds vaguley familiar but just got bumped to the top of my list. Thanks for the rec.

Eamon Short

The regular show is one hour twice weekly and movie mindset is two hours once weekly fuck off lol

Adam Geddes

Check out seeking derangements podcast

Bartlebee

movie people become stronger with solidarity. That's how you can learn cool things like Taste the Blood of Dracula's surprising class analysis

Thom

2 hours of banal movie takes yet the regular show barely fills a full hour anymore lol

buttface

"I gots to know ..."

THEKILLERWHALE

Goddamn, before movie mindset I don't think I heard any chapo eps with this lady on, if there are any. But she is funny as fuck and her and Will and great chemistry. Also she really really knows her shit. She even seems to have more knowledge on the subject than Will. That's no knock on him just a huge huge compliment to her.

Eamon Short

Dying at “Mario kart music”

SF

Hesse, he was definitely pissing

Bmac

hedly lamar voice: keeenkeee...

calvin kilby

last house on the left but that one is more of a straight up revenge film where the aggrieved parents avenge their kids.

calvin kilby

This just begs for a full five movie dirty harry retrospective.

Charles Voelger

What a great gaffe!

Nimbly Bimbly As FUCK

Sudden Impact is very similar to I Spit On Your Grave if anyone’s ever seen it. Both hillbillies gang raping an educated girl they perceive as snotty, both have one hesitant male participant that even the victim sort of pities (giving the audience permission to pity him as well) and ofc brutal revenge on the rapists. There are differences, such as ISOYG going with Saw esque torture porn while Sudden Impact goes with one consistent M.O. There’s also no Ray equivalent in ISOYG. Nevertheless they both fit in the same genre of brutal vigilante vengeance for rape that has you unequivocally rooting for the rape victim. Any other movies that fit this genre?

Liam

Any Which Way is so fucking good, objectively a big nothing of a movie but filled with personality. Gotta love the world's softest biker gang being chased off by Ruth Gordon in Ma Barker mode.

Rohmer Simpson

Fantastic ep! Pink Cadillac is also a good and overlooked Eastwood film from the 80s. Loving this series.

Nixper

Ty for including the source material for next week's ep. Now this is podcasting!

Gordon Shumway

Should’ve been Bronco Billy (1980) and Any Which Way But Loose (1978) Missed opportunity Both comedies ,which he isn’t known for, and could also be seen as deconstructions of masculinity

Zach H.

re - soundtracks - I didn't know Lalo Schifrin did 'Enter the Dragon'. I just remember him from the theme music to Mission: Impossible. Apparently he did a ton of soundtracks. He also cameo'd as an orchestra conductor in 'Red Dragon'.

Colin C.

I too have a handcuff for fetishing women

Curran Dillis

My girlfriend works on the WB lot and says Clint has side by side parking spots because he’s so old he can’t park. I saw him at a press junket for the mule years ago and even then I was like “this guy is still making movies?!” He looks like the oldest man on earth when he doesn’t have hair and makeup

Don Arangio

I think I read somewhere, maybe in Crazy Days and Nights, that because he puts them together so quickly, his recent films are an absolute joy to work on. The shoots always finish on time, if not early. Gotta respect him for that, if nothing else. My one issue with Sully is that in real life the NTSB didn't give Sully any shit. IRL the NTSB is an extremely lean and professional organization, and most of the time when they investigate a crash it's a horrible time because people, potentially dozens or hundreds of people, died. They were very happy to be working on the Sullivan accident and the NTSB report all but says "hallelujah".

Gordon Schmidt

John rocks

michael berg

most impressive!

Chad A Eklund

Why not Magnum Force and Pale Rider? Harry Calahan blowing away a group of vigilante motorcycle cops? Sudden Impact and especially Tightrope were terrible.

Poppy Chulo

I would love to hear Will's list of top underrated movies that you would never find on a Internet list of best movies PLEASE

Kristin Gerick

Albert Popwell is in every Dirty Harry movie! He's a bank robber in the Scorpio one, he's a murdering pimp in Magnum Force, he's the leader of a knock off "Black Panther" group in The Enforcer (the Symbionese Liberation Army one). He even geta referenced in Hot Fuzz.

Yairo Martis

I swear Clint upgraded to the Automag because Bronson whipped out a Wildey in Death Wish 3.

Yairo Martis

should we have had any expectations at all abt wills ability to pronounce nguyen?

Woods Edge Builders Collective

You can’t get away from Clint. Even if you don’t agree with his politics, don’t like his aesthetic, the guy is absolutely baked into not just American culture but the art of cinema in general and you are missing out on something fundamental about the the medium if you’re not familiar with his work

Nick Muscatiello

Incorrect

Nick Muscatiello

Eastwood is thee most overrated director. Gran Torino-Freaky Friday meets Karate Kid, with the ending of Cool Hand Luke tacked on
