Journalist and author Matt Hongoltz-Hetling returns to the show to discuss his new book If It Sounds Like a Quack…A Journey to the Fringes of American Medicine. We discuss the history and rise to prominence of fringe medicines, how alternative medicine shifted from being the provenance of the left-wing to the right-wing, and how the various failures and inequities of the American healthcare system allow scam medicine to flourish.

Oh shit, I think We'll There's Your Problem did an episode on this light cure box(something similar anyway) fucking wild.

ploob

I love the first 16 minutes of this episode, exposing the hypocrisy of the medical field (specifically doctors because we love nurses folks).

Heather Kim

Crypto-reactionary.

Axel Herrera

Wear what? The Bernie left split into neo neo cons and just straight libtards like this podcast and you. At least we still have the bruenigs. Go back to Reddit little libtard!

Bob K Ross

Vince Gilligan was great in this ep

William Stevan

Nah, I just knew it. You guys wear it on your sleeves. Lol.

Axel Herrera

I'm capable of listening to things i disagree with lol

Bob K Ross

I'm a sub. Triggered?

Bob K Ross

I bet you listen to Red Scare.

Axel Herrera

not sure what it is about this guy’s voice but as soon as he starts talking my brain checks out immediately.

So do all the libtards! Guess what u are?

Bob K Ross

Noooo the trap above, bro.

Bob K Ross

They love to make fun of her, which is always good, but I don't know where you're getting anything else. Is it just anti vaccine conspiracies giving you brain worms?

Poppy Chulo

I do support Biden—Hunter Biden, that is.

Axel Herrera

It's cool to think leftists who don't support joe biden are all rfk supporters. Don't let people call you retarded stalinists or libtards, man. Keep reaching for that rainbow!

Bob K Ross

I just wanna feel that bobby k throat goat action!

Bob K Ross

that trap loves her?

Bob K Ross

I tried tapering and even using the stem and vein shit, but would ultimately manage to fumble it, so CT it has been. The advice is much appreciated but I'm already in day 5 of the Cold Turkey haha, so I'm pretty sure the worst is past me. It's worth mentioning that I was doing 15gpd max for no more than 7 months, so I'm not too worried. I'm used to withdrawals but I've made this one relatively worse by completely rawdogging it, I usually have my Ritalin script, vape/cigs and weed to help me through, but I'm trying to completely get rid of my stimulant dependency. So I've been exceptionally low energy lately. I've heard of gaba but Lyrica? My father has fibromyalgia, so he takes it but I'd never have assumed it'd work for withdrawals.

Ali Saribas

I was taking 30g a day for like a year. It sucks man but It's definitely doable - see if you can get Gabapentin or lyrica. Lyrica especially completely kills the withdrawal. Expect a couple weeks tops before you get back to baseline physically, but mentally may be longer. Best bet is taper down. No reason to go cold turkey - just needless discomfort. Take your dose down by 10% every couple days and you should be off it within a month or so and its not all that bad

What does Kamala Harris have to do with anything?

Poppy Chulo

give me my podcast you goddamn patriots

chapo celebrating 4th of july. a new low

Rix Yarbrough

It's dumb enough when right-wingers think every leftist loves Kamala and Biden and CNN, but it's especially retarded when RFK Jr supporters do it.

Axel Herrera

Big Audio 💪

Steele Partridge

This is probably my 5th(?) time withdrawing, so I'm pretty used to the process, but it really depends on how much you've taken and for how long. I've been using it for the past 5 years or so, but I've always made myself take a break in the summer, so withdrawals have never been too bad. You'll typically have to deal with diarrhea, weird emotional bouts, RLS, mild flu-like symptoms, anhedonia/depression, and anxiety. But it really does depend on how much per day you used, and for how long. Some people who use 100+ grams per day experience something like real opiate withdrawals, which you can see a lot of on r/quittingkratom. For many who don't take it as Intensely, it shouldn't be too much of a nightmare. Thankfully, as long as the usage isn't that intense, the acute symptoms should only last a week tops, and the mental symptoms two weeks tops I stopped because this is around the time I usually do, and my body needs a break from all the stims. I took it to deal with my bullshit job, but I'm quitting that as well, so there's no good reason. I've noticed myself becoming far more numb and isolated than I'd like to be as well. If you think you're taking too much, then you probably are. Environmental influences aside, it's your decision at the end of the day. Part of what makes withdrawals so much worse than being sick is that it's in your control at the end of the day.

Ali Saribas

What's it like? I'm taking a lot of Kratom right now, and wondering if it's too much, and if I'll have withdrawal.. Why did you decide to stop taking it?

Maybe add more ancillary comments, I’m sure the problem is you’re not piping up enough

Sparky

How am I supposed to celebrate the glory of the Greatest Nation God Ever Gave Mankind(TM) if my slop is late?

Sparky

idc if this is against some sort of Patreon tos, but my car got effed and I need some help https://gofund.me/1459bd38

Underscore_Demilich

Thank you for the idea, same here.

Poppy Chulo

Literally every time private equity buys a hospital you start to get reports of surgeons having to halt surgeries due to finding blood and tissue on every tray of ostensibly sterilized surgical tools

Colin Clark

Will sarcastically saying at the end that if I'm vomiting and having diarrhea, I'm getting rid of the toxins in my body really made me crack up. Currently withdrawing from kratom and well, I hope I'm doing something right

Ali Saribas

RFK Jr is a democrat

Evan Scott

They all do this now. "voting doesn't matter and who cares" AND ALSO "omg you can't possibly be serious about voting for a non-democrat" You're all overdue for some serious self-reflection and do some actual thinking. Not going to happen if they all want gigs on MSNBC and hollywood, is it?

Lydia Maria Child

Evan

Malthus would be overjoyed, meatball ron's next decision could be moving people to the swamps.

Daniel Martínez González

Anything that goes for moneygrabbing always go from that into narcissism, then egomania and finally horny af. It's the dark side path but for people who are allergic to 8 to 17 works.

Daniel Martínez González

One of the most common things is instruments witg what we call proteins ending up back in the sterile field used on a patient. Sometimes they catch it after the fact and will tell the patient (I don't believe that occurs every time, the liability is enormous) but I'm sure very often nobody even realizes it happened. There are a lot of cannulated items and instruments with areas people overlook.

Poppy Chulo

If people knew what went on in sterile processing departments they would be shocked and disgusted. Imagine going in for a gallbladder surgery and having instruments with dried gore and proteins still in the cannulas or the insulation on the laparoscopic arms cracked so that your liver gets unknowing cooked during a routine procedure and you die. Happens every year, we call them critical and adverse events. The hospital I work for killed over thirty people in about a six year period from negligence and more than fifty had adverse events resulting in injury or having the wrong amputation, or being given too much of a drug. I know this because they disclosed this to the nurses and perioperative department in a meeting. So that's just the ones they admitted to. Labor and delivery accidentally killed a healthy newborn last year or the year before.

Poppy Chulo

What’s the point of being an alternative medicine practitioner/guru if you can’t sleep with your patients?

J.P. McD.

Especially funny because they said they were doing that as they did it

Greg Ziomek

Really funny some people are mad the episode was too trusting in doctors and the medical establishment while others are mad it was too critical of them

George P

I think it'd be fun to go back to the miasma theory. Feeling sick? Must be too much bad air!

Broadway Joe

People are very protective of their “quackery”, it's individual, it's self-selected, it's based on "doing your own research", and unfortunately rejection of Western medicine itself is often seen as being no different than rejecting capitalism and consumerism (and is not differentiated from the industry and structure around it). So I’m not surprised this episode is being wrongly misconstrued as “cucking”; people just want to be told vaccines and modern medicine as a whole are a giant op. Admitting that Western medicine itself is effective and shouldn't be thrown out just because the establishment around it is fucked, is selling out.

Axel Herrera

The Chapo guys have been wrong on COVID the whole time and are doubling down like they did when they got Bernie wrong.

Darius

A lot of origins of the antivax movements are old school libs too. baffles me

aarinsanity

Made it 9 minutes in, guest gives the mainstream medical industry way too much credit, it's kind of gross no thanks

Michael Martin

I,got 3 minutes in and your guest made me wanna die instead of falling asleep

Bob K Ross

Yeah that’s why everyone takes vitamin C when they get a cold because Linus Pauling (Nobel in chemistry, not medicine) put that mostly wrong association into the public consciousness. He kept writing books recommending bigger and bigger doses of it.

MKatieUltra

People who are good at one thing think they're good at every fucking thing. That's why we get geniuses who are also blasted idiots.

Rohmer Simpson

Steve Jobs had a probably curable cancer and died because he thought he knew better and could cure it with a vegan diet.

MKatieUltra

Yeah I lived with a pediatrician who told me that after he paid his loans, we had the same take home pay

MKatieUltra

Great episode-I can't emphasize Matt's point enough-the "alternative medicine" types are all about the money as well. Regarding doctors the economist Dean Baker has written much about how the profession has designed the system to ensure the high salaries they have through low supply/high demand. He has also written a lot about liberating IP to decrease medicine. He has a free book https://deanbaker.net/books/rigged.htm

Jennifer Reft

He made this point-the *only* thing mainstream medicine has going for it, is that it has the best medical interventions that we have (and not always that.) I'm a physical therapist and I've worked in the medical field for 30 years, and both my parents were in the field as well (not doctors). Much about the medical system completely sucks. It's my personal opinion if we had a truly accessible system for all (that is took the money aspect of it) that would solve about 50% of the problems-the other half consists of systemic problems related to the culture and other issues.

Jennifer Reft

It’s pretty hard to stomach especially when you consider what physicians have done for America since the spring of 2020

T

Holy shit just realized the sodium chloride the latest thing my crank uncle has been doing. I think that’s it at least. He orders it off Amazon and eBay, it’s use in tiny amounts to preserve foods as it inhibits bacteria I guess. He dilutes it himself and drinks it. And apparently you mess that up you’re screwed. He’s also STILL on the horse paste. He’s always been a huge crank but didn’t know one of his crankeries was from an alien from the andromeda galaxy

More Human than Human

Have toronto tickets but can't go- if anyone wants the tickets, lmk.

Voynich

Fuck RFK Jr., seriously. He combines all the worst elements of our politics into one person.

Thomas Leposa

LMAOO I’m a Lytle too 😂 not directly related to Gary tho. And ya the guest is right, it’s ‘Lie-tul’ but don’t worry Chapo boys, everyone always says ‘Little’

Aaron L

“The cons rise to the top.” RFK JR knows that first hand being Joe Kennedy’s grandson.

Michael

I can say for a fact that the starting salory is not remotely $300 Grand in many specialties. And by the way many, many doctors DO NOT want things to be this way. Believe it or not, providers can get screwed by the insurance companies too. I normally enjoy their cynicism, but when they're out of their depth like this, it's deeply irritating

Kevin

Sorry, that’s actually a good place to stop that comment for now***

Kryn Benski

Haven’t listened yet, but

Kryn Benski

I have had "real doctors" give me longterm dangerous drugs and at least one major unnecessary surgery. On several occasions, I've dealt with "real doctors" who would not examine or deal with my poc partner or, when I did direct care work, adults with disabilities. And, of course, when I was younger in the 1980s to mid-90s, three "real doctors" asked if I had "weird sex" (aka, was gay) and one recommended conversion. All but one or two "real doctors" are cold and rude, and many have been awful. Single Payer is needed, but as Cuba discovered, isn't remotely sufficient: doctors would need COMPLETE re-training.
