903 - Tuna Melt Moment feat. Alex Nichols (1/27/25)
Added 2025-01-28 07:38:06 +0000 UTC
Alex is back on the pod to review the first full week of 2rump news, but first, we wish friend of the show Catturd a speedy recovery from his impacted bowel. Then, we look at Trumps barrage of executive orders, cabinet staffing, and denial of security clearances to a number of former NatSec ghouls. We also discuss the Democrats’ new Tuna-based appeals for viral attention, and consider how history will judge Joe Biden.

Studio Novaya: For what it's worth -- translating ancient languages and translating "living" languages are two totally different things. A living language is used for communication. An ancient language serves as historical record. It's a lot easier to stick with a strictly literal translation of something when you don't have to worry about how it comes across. It's more of an academic exercise of trying to decipher the source as "accurately" as possible. Take a look at early modern translations of the bible. They can sometimes be gibberish for this very reason. Or even Oppenheimer's famous "I am become death" line is really just the act of mistaking "accuracy" for "equivalency". I am become death sounds odd (and even kind of cool) in English precisely because our grammar is different. There is not a one on one equivalence between the two languages. A modern translator (not that Indian languages are my thing, mind you,) would simply translate it as "Now I have become death". That's the difference between "accuracy" and "equivalency". Equivalency is equivalency of meaning, whereas "accuracy" is a precise reproduction. Large language models and deep AI learning are not capable of equivalency. They can reproduce a facsimile of equivalency based on statistical probability, but there is no interpretation involved in what they do. THe problem is that translating a living language is 75% interpretation if not more. Without interpretation, there is no meaning. So what we will end up with is automated translation systems that reproduce text in different languages, all of which will reflect the uncanny valley, and people will mistake the uncanny valley for cultural differences. In other words, our ability to communicate will deteriorate more and more. That's the BEST CASE SCENARIO for LLMs. Pure functionality, no utility or significance. If you want to live in that world, or say that anyone who criticizes it is "clueless," I honestly don't think you're going to like the end results. But what do I know. "As a..."

Ryan: I'm going to do that annoying thing where someone says, it depends on how you define the question. Will they be "desired?" Probably not. Will they be "necessary?" Yes. Will people recognize that necessity? Probably not. I think we are moving into an age where everything is "translated" and nothing makes sense. As for me, I do media and I work in a high context language, so right now, the demand is still there. I have no illusions about how much capitalism will fuck with things in the future though.

Can we stop acquiescing in advance to Trump in every possible way? Trump does not set the curve by which we judge early presidencies, his presidency is judged the way all presidencies are judged and his 47% approval rating immediately after his inauguration is abysmal.

WTF do I know but since you asked: Depends on your specialty. My baby cousin has been spending her college years learning Ancient Greek and Aramaic, and translating ancient texts. She will likely work in academia pouring over old original documents. Possibly using the help of translation tools outside of the books she has been using during her studies. Currently human editors are still required for most live CC translation because the software just isn’t there yet especially for complex names and niche sports. Everyone is focused on humans supervising software at the moment. You could be the pet secretary of a wealthy Luddite with international dealings to manage. There’s art to translation so there will always be authors/ publishers who believe a human will grasp the nuance of the work better but yeah… also we all may loose access to majority of the Internet for our peasantish needs so like who knows you could end up with a boatload of underground/ shadow economy translation work. Nobody can really predict. As the douche bags say “parallel path it,” plan for both becoming obsolete and just a technical administrator of an automated system (like a tax preparer who uses a SaAS program to file for people) and for setting up a storefront where people can bring in their documents for assistance.

FFS, a large language model is not AI. As a translator, anyone who thinks LLM's even remotely resemble the way language works should have their tongue cut out and hands cut off so they're never able to access words again.

the tuna melt shit is basically DNC eggheads seeing people 8 years ago make jokes about bernie sanders' grandpa sweaters and soup and thinking that it's the sweaters and soup that made sanders popular and not realizing that people have to like your ideology first before you can get epic with your hot sauce memes

Silly, no. Whether or not you consider it “valuable,” it is happening. Their “take,” is just that they don’t understand. Ai and human brain science were at one time being developed side by side; there are also themes to explore around who holds the reins— it is super interesting global human development and not something to be brushed off in a “take,” no matter how savvy you think your guys are.

Their take is correct. It’s not that people don’t see the scope of its intent to replace jobs and shift the moral weight of an administrative state onto an algorithm, it’s that it offers nothing valuable in the context of current political economy. Trash future had a great episode with the same guest. They are more savvy and have the same take. They are watching our future happen in real time in Britain .

Can anyone recommend a competent non douchey guest they can have on to educate them about Ai? The consumer applications of Ai may not be interesting to U yet but being flippant about it is just stupid. It is a reminder of how little most people think about what makes the world and everyday utilities around them “go,” it makes you sound like guys who don’t know how to install a light fixture complaining about LED bulbs being sus or useless. You’re smarter than this. The applications in terms of data analysis, surveillance, and rapid iteration of new technologies that aren’t on the public’s mind yet… are real. Have to be happy about the American profiteers being beaten out by the CCP … anyway the way that you interact with government from the DMV to filing taxes, to police & military to TSA — bioengineering, medical research. That’s what’s interesting. You’re already using Ai likely in your podcasting software.

Did you all see the email that went out to most federal employees yesterday inviting them to resign? It's verbatim the email Musk sent to Twitter employees when he took over. So my friend's brother-in-law, who's a surgeon at the VA, got an email telling him he could resign immediately with 6mo pay and warning him that they would be prioritizing a return to in-person work going forward. Wondering if Trump is emulating Musk's approach to Twitter intentionally to reduce the federal govt to a husk of its former self.

I will say this much about AI assisted search type tasks like they're discussing at the half hour mark, it's good for neiche questions. If you have a topic like exercise science where the stakes of being wrong are relatively low, but you still want to be in touch with the consensus... honestly it ain't bad. I've spent the past year and a half heavily customizing my routine to include some rehab and "prehab" type material thanks to some dumb training decisions. And as a jujitsu autist I've never done cardio in dedicated sessions in my goddamn life. So being able to ask the dumb little specific questions one mught have in a situation like that is kinda nice. ...I still look at it like it's gonna tell me the deadlift is actually a spine day classic or a rotational exercise, but if you go in not retarded I think you'll leave not crippled.

Who are in the pool of voters in this depraved antisocial political carnival? Who do you expect at this point to inhabit the ecosystem of the established parties but the most short term, incoherent, apathetic, and/or silver spoon naives. Liberals deserve the criticism because they are historically themselves an arm of the right wing. The notion that Dems and liberalism has ever been a higher moral ground has only been able to exist in the juxtaposition of the uglier friend Republican. But friends they are. The notion of liberalism being an opponent to Republicans is a schizo definition set by reactionaries themselves which liberals eat up. If reps were not such mouth breathing husks they would realize how much they synergize. Criticism of liberalism is a criticism of slavery, of creating homelessness, of the invasion of the middle east, of deregulations across industries and banks, of Obama era deportations/drone strikes, of Biden approved trump boarder policy, of religious servitude to capital, of US hegemony, of funding genocide. I don't care if they use their indoor voice to do violence and the other hollers it through the rooftops. It is all inhuman. In fact, the misery is a more efficient machine when this back and forth is the dynamic. It creates perspectives as misguided a thing as to blame the voters. This isn't a functional democracy we're talking about

The boys are just plain wrong that Trump is enjoying a honeymoon period, unless they’re thinking of an underwater honeymoon. The Reuters/Ipsos poll on Sunday showed that only 45% of Americans approve of Trump’s performance; his disapproval rate is 46%. (The poll had a margin of error of about 4 percentage points.) Trump’s highest-ever approval rating was 49% after he began his first term but fell to 34% after J6. For U.S. voters, this is not a love match, it’s a Boston marriage without a honeymoon.

Right wingers don’t lie about who they are. We know they’re regressive, flat-Earth evangelicals who think America’s peak was just before the Civil War. Liberals pose as progressives while demonizing their left flank and begging for 3-5% of the conservative vote.
What did Republicans do with the Tea Party? Did they marginalize them as lunatics? No, they embraced them and now we have folks like MTG and Gaetz and Hegseth for Secretary of Defense.
What did Democrats do with Bernie’s movement? “Sexist, racist, Bernie Bros,” and all the rest.

Yes, I am in an adjacent industry and do a ton of machine learning. To the degree that this stuff works, it is as a Google replacement, not as an authentic creator of real code. You can plug stuff in but you will not get a self contained script that does what you want it to do.
This is because it is an LLM trained on the internet and not on code itself. That means, it is not treating a programming language as a language to predict. It is predicting what the internet will say in response to your question. This does not mean it is useless but it is somehow less impressive that we just recreated Google at enormous cost with very unreliable results.

Craig, I feel like it’s less about people suddenly voting for the republicans and more about people just not voting for either party. I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure more people just didn’t vote than did vote for either candidate. That’s on the dems. Their opponent is literally Donald Trump and the winner was a resounding “neither”

Well said Matelda. I feel like dems have co-opted the concept of “the left” as well. Like if I talk to people younger than me, a lot of them just have no concept of a union, or a public service, or government regulation making anything better for them. The left to them is just identity politics.
Dems claim that they want to do something but they need all three branches and 600 years to get anything done and if the people fail to deliver that, then the people deserve whatever happens.
When dems do have power it’s just the most annoying wonky bullshit and watching rich white people pretending to understand drag brunch. Being on the left means I’m fundamentally against the concept of “rich people” because it means someone has to be “not-rich people”. I’m not necessarily opposed to the wonky bullshit to help some people get food, and housing, and education. I’m opposed to charging money for basic necessities at all.
The Democratic Party mostly just seems to exist in order to narrow the Overton window to the right.

I’m a computer engineering student and it can’t really do any of my coding homework. It helps for sure but I think of it more as a list of useful commands for a specific application than anything I could just plug in and expect to work.
A lot of my classmates try to have it do everything and it’s just fucking trash. It’s so obvious every time and it’s infuriating to work with people who can’t even understand their own fucking code and act like I must have made a mistake bc the computer said to do something stupid and wrong.
For anything like physics or math it’s almost a net negative. If you ask it to walk through a relatively simple, standard Fourier transform for example, it will just make shit up somewhere in the process bc it doesn’t actually understand mathematical rules. It’s equivalent to searching “common Fourier transforms”, picking the one that’s most similar out of the list from Wikipedia, and just ignoring the negative sign or the exponent or whatever it is that makes your specific problem different from the textbook example.
Sorry for the infodump lol.

The fiber causing constipation thing can be true in extreme situations, but there’s one idiopathic constipation case study all the carnivore diet perverts refer to. Overall it’s still the consensus that you very much need fiber from vegetables, it makes your colon release certain kinds of fatty acids that are good for it. Ppl who eat the widest variety of fiber have a healthy and diverse microbiome. I swear with all these carnivore guys, it’s all just residual hatred for their mommies that they don’t eat vegetables though lol.

That coverage you did of the "professional" historians' take on Biden's presidency was beyond cringe, it was literally vomit-worthy. Oh, "tokenism" is a concrete benefit for everyone, right? You guys were correct on them using the likes of the contemptibly stupid Linda Thomas-Greenfield as a black face in favor of genocide, of course. Who were the 2 morons who claimed Biden was "the most pro-labor President in modern times?" I guess in their little ivory towers they somehow failed to notice when Biden broke the Railroad Workers' strike on behalf of the owners, assuring that a quarter of the way thru the 21st century those workers don't have a single day's sick leave. In Duluth, MN where I currently live, the free local weekly is Shit-Lib Central. Last summer they ran a shockingly moronic cover story claiming that professional historians were rating Biden the 8th greatest, and Trump was the 2nd worse (can't recall whether Nixon or Bush Jr. was bottom of that barrel.) Well, I recently saw a ranking by the public, & Biden was in the bottom 2 of 6 modern presidencies. His policies were directly the same as Bush Jr., lots of foreign wars, even worse than Shrub, sending billions to crooks & Nazis in Ukraine. Overall, the public poll I saw (think it was one of the big ones, can't recall) ranked Bidet at 32% positive and 68% negative when he left. Not as bad as Shrub's 22% popularity when he left, but over 2/3rds, speaks for itself. Oh, lastly since I brought up Ukraine-- who were those "fantastic morons" (quoting Norm Finklestein) braying about "Putin's savage invasion" of Banderist Nazis killing Russian speakers, banning their language, etc. to glorify WW II war criminals like 98-year old Yaroslav Hunka, who got 2 standing ovations in the Canadian Parliament for being Waffen-SS, and slaughtering 1,000s of Polish Jews. (Oops, they didn't know what "fighting the Russians between 1942-45" meant.) Somebody needs to read Scott Horton's new book "Provoked", but Upton Sinclair was right, you can't get someone to believe something that affects their bottom-line paycheck.

The election wasn’t a Mondale style rout but it was a strong win for Trump. Dems lost the popular vote, lost every swing state, lost ground with every minority demo they thought they could count on, and underperformed Biden 2020 in practically every county in the country. It wasn’t a blowout but it wasn’t close either. The Dems’ acquiescence is just because it’s the easier thing to do and they don’t have any will or plan on how to do anything moderately difficult.

Rewatch it and focus on the dialogue. It’s worse than a lifetime movie. The scene where they begin deliberation is amazing. Like how do you not use some form of filmmaking tool like a passage of time or literally anything to do that scene. The bailiff literally drops the evidence on the table to begin deliberation and I swear to god zero exaggeration, within TWO MINUTES, the 11 other jurors have all voted guilty (all archetypes, Asian woman, hot woman whose one line is “yeah it’s like choosing what shoes to wear”, stoner kid, old lady, angry black guy, angry tough bald guy, mean black woman, etc) and they’re FURIOUS he has the gall to waste their time and discuss the case. All with the assumption that there’s a mountain of evidence (an exact Toni collete line in the next scene where they literally cheers and say “to the justice system, it’s not perfect, but it’s the best system anyone’s ever come up with yet”) when in reality it is the thinnest case of all time and he would be acquitted almost as quickly as they’re ready to convict!! I’m sorry, I couldn’t disagree more and this reply is so long and full of quotes and parentheses, I know it’s absurd, but really if you just watch the dialogue it’s worse than lifetime movie

Sure, capitalists abuse it for their means. But is using AI to create advertisements for services that can be replaced by the same AI sustainable? It’s lawyers, tax professionals, and white collar paper pushers that should be afraid of this technology IMO.

Obama fulfilling his ultimate desire of fucking the MOST generic White woman of the new millenium would be completing his arc for sure. Happy for him if true. Hopefully Michelle kills him and finally releases the pics of him getting his dick sucked by Brace in Peoria.

I didn't think it was THAT bad, and some people seem to like it. The concept was interesting, but you're correct that the movie's understanding of how the justice system actually works is pre-school level. It's like they read about the concept of juries and then pulled the rest from imagination alone.

The problem all these historians and media figures have is that they came up during a time when they had total control over the discourse and thus could make it about whatever THEY wanted to talk about. And now that their control is gone, they don't know to talk about anything else.

This stuffs all great, but I just watched “juror #2” from last year a film that has a pretty good chance to be eastwoods last, and I feel pretty betrayed y’all didn’t cover it. It’s the worst movie I’ve ever seen. Had the most lifetime network dialogue ever like I’ve never seen a movie where the characters turn to the audience and explain the stakes or the legal process in ways that ham fisted does no justice… This film makes the avengers look like Kubrick. the message Eastwood tries to deliver too.. I could go on and on and on, but after Jewell and the analysis of Clint as the premiere reactionary film maker of our time, not covering this last one is deeply upsetting for me.
