MM35 - Peckinpah feat. Noah Kulwin

On this week’s episode of Movie Mindset, Will and Hesse are joined by Noah Kulwin of Blowback to examine a pair of films from legendary American filmmaker and alcohol enthusiast Sam Peckinpah.

First up is Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) an elegiac western starring James Coburn and Kris Kristofferson as the titular historical figures and friends who find themselves on the opposite side of the law paving a path to each other by killing almost everyone they encounter. Beans are eaten, whiskey is slurped, men are killed, and the music and acting chops of Bob Dylan make an appearance.

Next is Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) which finds Peckinpah mainstay Warren Oates as a thinly-veiled version of the director himself, an American expat in Mexico who takes his prostitute girlfriend on a charming trip into the countryside to retrieve the head off the corpse of her ex. Tequila is chugged, crabs are picked off genitals and dozens ore shot to death.

Watched Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid while a bit depressed. The Knockin on Heaven's door scene made me tear up. Devastating scene

Yo Gig Young was the evil MC in 'They Shoot Horses Don't They' which y'all should cover if you ever do a Jane Fonda ep. Great 70s downer.

Another note for the Nixon angle is the dollar bill behind Bennie’s piano at the bar

Great soundtrack.

Chorus. The term for Dylan’s character is the Chorus.

Or as Mj lenderman would say “knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knocking on heavens door tonight”

Mitch

I wonder if there was any relationship between Hunter Thompson and Sam P.

M Varnzo

Are there any neo-Peckinpah film directors?

Yarblockos

Has "Nobody loses all the time" been presented as a possible title to the ghostwriter of the upcoming Biden autobiography?

Bryan Williams

Regarding crab treatment in the early 20th century: my grandpa told my dad that the cure for crabs in the marines was to shave half your pubes off and burn the other half and stab the crabs as they fled the flames. Probably bullshit, though my grandpa had a predilection for using white gasoline in his zippos and would occasionally catch on fire from that, so 🤷🏻‍♂️

Alex “WORLDWIDE” Kellar

bob dylan showing up is like bowie just exploding on to a scene in fire walk with me and then he’s gone

bruce

Love the series, but God dammit, William. Do an episode about Michael Mann's Heat already! I need you and Hessa to read a book about metals.

Tom Joad

Are y'all gonna cover any good movies?

drunk cig

I think it’s the one on Amazon in the us.

I’m not sure if it was the lore that knocking on heavens door was literally created for this, that Dylan throws a knife clean through someone’s neck, that the movie opens with people blowing up chicken heads, or the line about the shotgun filled with dimes spreading someone like a pussy, but you have convinced both me and my lady partner to see this. Kudos.

Young Guns was a better depiction of the Lincoln County war

Jasper Petty

Billy the Kid is an American hero

I would like to know more. Lol. This is speaking to me

Turns out it would be like 8 nickels. Real life Pat had blue eyes and many try to reflect this in casting 😂😂 learn something new every day.

Michelle S

I had a vague memory of seeing my dad watch this movie when you talked about Pat Garrett's eyes. Turns out, I was thinking of Chisum. Glen Corbett played him and had the bluest eyes I have ever seen. So if had a nickel for every time someone with haunting blue eyes played Pat Garrett...

Michelle S

I too thought Benny was Alfredo Garcia, I totally thought the movie was gonna be him getting the money for his own head. Anyways, the waking up buried alive and his girlfriend dying scene was really upsetting.

Anomalie

i made one because i’m currently making my way through all of them: https://boxd.it/GJnRw

Is there an active list of all the movies covered and mentioned in MM so far? I am too lazy to go back through old episodes and online sleuthing hasn't uncovered a list yet.

ERIC

gawd shut up

ChlamydiaPuppy2

growing up dad would say the title to this movie and my mom would roll her eyes. There was never anything else said because now I realize the movie very likely spoiled an otherwise successful date night.

Thank you! As a younger person 'Knocking on Heavens Door' was one of my favorite songs.

How do I watch the criterion edit?

Bob presents initially as an animal-talent fairy and develops into a desert water sprite by casting a door-knock death spell over various actors.

absolutely

Rohmer Simpson

Agreed

Eamon Short

Do yall think Peckinpah inspired Mikes death in Breaking Bad?

Axels Pizzas

me, i prefer my iron ore whole, not like swiss cheese

I've only read some brief excerpts about life in antebellum Dixie land, but after reading them I became convinced that the Dixie way of life was just exported to the west coast after the civil war ended. Manifest destiny is really tied up in Dixie mythos as well so I think they got their way even though they couldn't take their favorite property system with them.

Doug Cartel

If a movie isn’t readily available to stream, at least to rent, then it should be disqualified from being a MM selection

Adam B

I like how easily you can tell which movies Will picks and which ones Hesse picks

Tim O'

'boys will be boys' I say as a drunk teenager pulverizes my skull with a .44

Doug Cartel

No love for Convoy, disappointed 😔

Calvin H Frey

I wonder if the gag in Napoleon Dynamite where the farmer shoots a cow in front of a school bus full of children was inspired by the tourist bus slowly driving by in the hit man shootout scene of Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia

Aaaaaaaaaaa

In 'The Wild Bunch', when the bunch first reaches Mexico, Angel says "Mexico, tierra linda", and Warren Oates says "What's so 'lindo' about it?' Peckinpah sure came to love Mexico after leaving Hollywood.

Yairo Martis

alright, this is ridiculous. two of my all time favorite movies and you also bring noah on? cmon guys. I don't deserve all this <3

PaulB

sad you didn't pick the wild bunch but Peckinpah is a godlike director so this should be a joy

calvin kilby

- "He's a loser." - "Nobody loses all the time!"

Rohmer Simpson

Cross of Iron is really funny if you assume that it’s a sequel to Come and See

Benjamin Button

One more of these badass dad showing you cool action movies at a too-young age. My dad was a big Peckinpah head and my mom went to visit her family for a weekend when I was about five. He brought me to the video store and gave me the wink-wink nudge-nudge, don't tell mom that I let you watch this. So when Dustin Hoffman started wasting those British rednecks we were slapping high-five and saying hell yeah. Thanks dad!

THEKILLERWHALE

I'm glad you guys didn't just do Straw Dogs - now I have new moves to watch.

Bryant Eng

Hey Chris Wade, so this elderly gentleman comes into my work here in L.A. Name's Richard. Nice guy, funny and clever. Also happens to be the screenwriter of ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ and director of TIGHTROPE with Clint Eastwood. If you'd like to reach out to him for the upcoming Movie Mindset episode let me know as I think I've got his contact info.

The "loose boots, tight pussy..." live is probably a reference to what Nixon secretary of agriculture said when asked what black Americans wanted. Also parodied in Kentucky Fried Movie https://youtu.be/J5Sn-A7D76o?si=DV-jrznApdPUWwMb

Branden Snyder

Pat Garrett used to be a renegade. He used to fool around. But he couldn't take the punishment and had to settle down

Tetsuo Shima

takeshi kitano movie mindset please

The pod theme sounds like Boeckner recorded with a haunted Martin Rev drum machine
