I wonder if he feels indirectly responsible for his sons slaves. Even if they weren't the worst slave owners, they haven't necessarily bettered the situation of these young adults, and such a result being normalized in their society isn't really an embodiment of "love thy enemy" This is just my take after seeing the emotion on his face at the end here, since he did hear Arnheids backstory just the night before... I don't actually know/remember what he's thinking though or if he did anything :P
