She told her boyfriend that she was breaking it off. All they seemed to do is fight these days. He took it rather petulantly and stomped out of her house. Then, a few days later, a large box arrived from him. Taking it as an apology gift, she took it out to the pool to unwrap it. Inside were three rather strange but related items.
The first was a large blue glass sculpture of a mermaid. She turned it over in her hand several times, trying to decide whether she liked it or not. Finally setting it down on the tiles, she turned her attention to the carved blue stone on a silver necklace. Once again, she wasn't quite sure whether she liked it. It felt strange to her. Rather than putting it down on the tile, she found herself slipping the necklace on. The final item was a blue crystal of the type she could attach to her navel ring. She had a collection of bangles that could be attached to her navel ring. For some reason, she decided that this item was "okay" and slipped it onto her navel ring.
Feeling suddenly dizzy, she collapsed to her knees by the pool. A scintillating glow had enveloped the statue, the amulet on her necklace and the navel ring fob. As she watched, the same glow surrounded her. She found herself forced to her side by the pool, unable to get up.
She watched, in a mixture of horror and fascination, as her legs became silvery and then developed scales of a pattern she knew too well. An avid fisherman, she'd often gone out for sea trout. The scales slowly climbed her body until they covered even a portion of her breasts. A wrench at her hips announced the growth of a tail. She could feel it snake it's way between her legs. As it grew, she discovered that it was fusing her legs as well. Soon, her legs, with their silvery scales, were fused from hip to toes. The toes soon fused as well, leaving her with a silvery fish tail. Her own tummy skin now stretched halfway down this new tail and her genitals were position closer to the tip of the tail than their normal position. A tickle at the tip of this new appendage announced the growth of the wide rayed tail fluke of the largest trout she'd ever seen!
The glow faded except for her chest and hips. After a few minutes, she discovered that she was having trouble breathing. Looking over her new form, she discovered gill covers at her hips. Tentatively she tried to move her new tail and gills. Without too much surprise, she discovered that they were definitely hers now. She could move them!
A sudden increase in brightness and a shower of sparkles caught her attention. The statue was fading as were the other gifts. Within moments, they had vanished.
She then felt an uncomfortable burning at her hips. Her new gills were drying out. As she rolled into the pool, she felt flaps close deep inside her chest. The water that she was breathing passed through her, somehow, to exit through her gills. At least she wouldn't drown. Thank goodness she'd elected to install a salt water pool instead of chlorine. Who knows that effect the chlorine would have on her gills!
Pulling herself onto the tiles, she felt the strange flaps open again and she discovered she could breathe air again. It was then she noticed the note at the bottom of box everything had arrived in.
"You always were a bit of a cold fish -- Good Luck Girard."
