Dabbling with magic has its own rewards and dangers. Of course the Old Gods didn't really exists any more than those mermaid transformation spells on the internet actually could work. Betty, though, had to try (just for fun) the strangely worded and difficult to pronounce spells in the ancient scroll she found. She discovered, to her horror, that these spells had a strange effect on her and her surroundings. First everything went dark, a stygian dark so dense it could almost be touched. She then felt the cold touch of water covering her as she lay in the deep dark she had summoned. The coldness faded to be replaced by pressure, a pressure that seeped quickly to her bones before fading. Some strange force began kneading her legs and arms like dough. Finally this sensation faded to be replaced by an intense ammonia smell that, in its turn, faded as well.
It was then Betty realized she wasn't at home any more. Surrounded by strange creatures with oddly luminescent parts, she felt distinctly odd herself. When a tentacle passed through her vision instead of the hand she'd intended to move, she realized that the spell wasn't a joke. Looking at her mutated body, part human but now mostly squid, she tried to scream only to discover that the water of the abyssal depths is too dense to scream or even talk.
In panic, she tried to swim upward but quickly realized she had no idea which way was really up. Her panic intensified even further when a strange creature with a huge parrot-like beak and far too many tentacles jetted towards her, its horrific body glowing from thousands of points of bioluminescence. It slowed as it reached her. Wrapping a huge tentacle about her waist almost tenderly, Betty became aware of a cold, powerful force invading her mind.
"It has been far too long since the upper world has sent a bride," was all the voice in her head intoned.
