Because I needed another project? A home away from YouTube
Added 2018-08-28 02:12:26 +0000 UTCI'll be writing more about this once it's less experimental, but I wanted to let my patrons know something new is in progress, if you hadn't seen it elsewhere.
I've been kinda excited about the potential for "re-decentralizing" the internet, i.e. finding ways to have smaller collections of servers that talk to each other and host communities of people, rather than the all-encompassing global cloud services that are so popular now.
Mastodon is one example of that in the social networking space, and for all its flaws I really do like it and for me at least it's been overtaking Twitter in actual usefulness lately.
But then there's video. YouTube is a frustrating platform to support, since as much as I appreciate the free hosting I don't like throwing my creative energies into a platform that doesn't necessarily respect my values. I've been mirroring videos elsewhere, like vimeo and archive.org, but now I'm setting up something myself using an open source hosting package that seems promising.
I know the server is still kinda alpha-quality. If you are on a fast internet connection you might have an okay time with it. I'm tracking down some bugs that seem to make it degrade especially badly if the internet connection is less than perfect.
If you like alpha-quality stuff and trying things out before it's really ready, you can head over to https://diode.zone :)
Once the server stabilizes a bit, I'm going to invite some friends and maybe we can have an electronics community or something. I'd like to try to create a place without so much automated content policing and commercial interests, but also a place maybe without the sexism and meanness that is nearly ubiquitous in this space on youtube.
Welcome to Diode Zone~

That sounds cool. I'm hoping to start contributing seriously to Youtube. My stuff will be largely pointed at a broad audience, but I'd love to have another platform for very focused electronics stuff. I'll definitely keep an eye on this and contribute if I can. I'll check out the new site when I'm not at work. ;-)
