Vegeta is the master strategist. In order to beat top, the suicide move was his ace in the hole. His Super Sayan Blue Ego Form is at its core Divine Energy. It is a different type of divine energy than destruction energy but it can compete (just different properties). TOP wasn’t a God of destruction. He had the capacity to become one and the powers of one, but he did not hold the office and had limited experience and training with divine power. Vegeta had mastered his divine power (Something Goku hasn’t been able to do yet). By using his self-destructive form it would either knock Top off (destroying the ground around, push him away), or it would force Top to use all his destroyer knowledge and power (if he had it) to destroy Vegeta and thus disqualify himself. As soon as Top tapped into that divine energy, it proved to he wouldn’t be able to win. Why? The story is about divines and mortals. Goku doesn’t win as Ultra instinct, and Frieza doesn’t win in his Golden form. The story is about mortals and team work and their proper place in the hierarchy and being their best selves through self-improvement.
