Ishigami's past is the one part I would say Kaguya as a series goes over-the-top-anime, rather than ridiculing over-the-top-animeness. Ogino is such a bizarre evil villain in an otherwise too-smart-for-evil-villains series. Even the characters portrayed as villains for the majority of the series end up being given some depth that, while not redeemable, at least explains some of their actions in interesting ways. There's only one exception I can think of and even SHE, while not stated outright as such, is pretty clearly a specific kind of sociopath who kinda still cares about some people, but her twisted ways of thinking lead her to be pretty awful to them regardless. The one-dimensional villain is especially strange when you consider that the entire point of this arc was that "many people, even those who are labeled as or appear to be evil, are better than you'd think". Ogino could've been portrayed as the popular kid whose status at school went to his head, making him obsessed with maintaining his image. In that case, him using his girlfriend as the carrot-and-stick would've made sense as a desperate move of someone with twisted priorities who genuinely felt like he had something to lose, rather than just a dick move of someone who had all the advantage anyway. I do like most of this arc. Kyoko remaining oblivious and even resentful towards Ishigami is a bold choice that not many stories would go for and the already established genuine friendship between Ishigami and Shirogane is made even better with this added context. Seriously, these two are the most genuine fictional bros ever.

So Miko is also partly responsible for helping him. Also Ishigami is a freshman so it's only been about a year since everything went down, which is why she's still hung up on it and why some 1st years still badmouth Ishigami
