When it comes to cutting the bridge it wasn't as bad as you think. Krillin saw Goku jumping down the cliff so it's not like he was trying to kill him. Counterfeit stone was much worse. Also Krillin masks his lack of confidence, which is understandable given his past - it's explained in couple episodes in the beginning rounds of Tenkaichi Budokai.
