You can think of Ten, Zetsu and Ren like a faucet. Ten is letting out a steady small stream that you can maintain full control over. Zetsu is closing off the faucet as tight as possible so that nothing leaks out. And Ren is turning it up all the way and letting it all blast out, to create a lot of power quickly, but in a way that's hard to control, and will rapidly deplete your reserves.
