Remember the DBZ episodes where Gohan was training Videl. It's a simular situation, they have only learned the very basics here. It'll make more sense latter on. These episodes are a lot to take in, but it will all make sense soon enough.

The greeting was a full blast of nen, Wing held back. So these guys got parts missing because they weren't prepared for it like Gon and Killua were.
