Across the Rhine (Roman to Germanic Warrioress TG)

Glad you enjoyed it Halima. The main descriptions are from the commissioner's request, but I certainly wasn't going for a Norse/Scandivanian thing with them. Just playing into the amusing Roman records where they are often described as large and bear-like. If I ever do a sequel I'll add some more dark-haired characters.

Excellent writing, and a welcome change of pace from the usual fare. The only sticking point for me is depicting the Germanic tribes as pop-culture Norse/Scandinavian (tall, with blonde hair and blue eyes). Germanic tribes didn't look that different from modern Europeans in terms of complexion and hair color.

Halima Abdi

True, but the Romans never conquered Germania apart from small acquisitions, so their culture and gods remained perceived as foreign and barbarian!

I was torn on 'pagan' as it is anachronistic, so well spotted. I decided to use it anyway as a nice catch word to sum up how the Romans dismissed Germanic cultures as barbaric, without constantly writing 'barbaric' over and over again.

great story - one thing though is that Roman’s whole deal was showing up at a place, seeing the gods there and saying β€œOh sick, you know our gods too? They just have new nametags?” Odin became Mercury, Tyr became Mars, Freyr and Freya became Apollo and Artemis, etc etc

The Sheriff

Ancient rome! Great setting πŸ‘Œ I'm not sure early empire era Romans would denigrate Germans as "pagans" which was a term invented by later christians (and means 'rurals' etymologically speaking). Like with your caveman story you write historical settings well! It's fun to see a Roman soldier try to find a new source of "Virtus" when that concept was so tied into masculinity for Romans
