The US still has what's called sundown towns where it's legal to attack black people after dark. It's not officially on the books everywhere anymore but some small towns still claim it as law. Texas definitely has sundown towns. This show fully downplays the racism of small-town America especially in the south.

I swear you will love him by the end of the show. It’s very creative character building that they have. I wouldn’t want it done any other way.
