One little wrinkle between the US Office and the original is you never really understood how David Brent got his job. He seems wholly incompetent. In later episodes, and periodically throughout the series, you learn that Michael Scott is an excellent salesman and even though he’s a terrible boss it’s semi understandable how he got, and keeps, his job.
