Download Link Provider.
Added 2021-08-14 16:17:49 +0000 UTCRecently I've got a bit of feedback on download providers, so I thought I'd see what opinions at large are on them.
Currently I use mega.nz, and I have a paid for account with them that gives me sufficient access to store plenty of things including custom content, tier rewards, latest releases, previous releases etc.
I've started using GDrive for the last releases upon request as I believe mega.nz's free limit is 2GB? I definitely do not want you guys to sub for early access and then be hit with a paywalled download service, that's awful and not what I intended at all, so thank you to everybody who let me know about this limit. GDrive has a 50GB Limit for me though, so I cannot store everything on Google Drive that I currently have on my Mega Cloud drive.
With mega.nz I do receive a small kickback when a plan is purchased from this link, however this is barely anything and I'm yet to accrue enough to even make a payout so far.
One thing that really annoys me is uploading, it takes me HOURS to upload the latest releases, and as each release gets even bigger, this takes even longer.
So I've thought of some different options:
Option 1:
Maintain Status Quo of v.0.11.2 - Upload the latest release onto Mega.nz and Google Drive, and have them available this way. This means double the upload time from completion to release and bug fixes etc, and GDrive would be limited to the latest release only (for free + early access) so it doesn't fill up. Everything else would be on Mega.
Option 2:
Ditch Mega, and go entirely with Google Drive. This would mean I'll cancel my Mega Sub and change to a plan with Google Drive instead, and post everything here. I am unware of any negatives with this approach, however I'd imagine there must be some as most AVN sites do not use GDrive, and I think this is actually to do with too many people using them at once?
Option 3:
Google Drive links for Early Access and the Game Tier, Mega links for the public/free releases.
This would get rid of the potential problem of too many people accessing the link at once, mean nobody was needing to be paying for both Patreon and Mega for this game, and adds a revenue maker for the free release. This probably makes the most business sense, but as the current amount isn't even enough for a payout over 3 years, it isn't that important.
Option 4:
Invest in Business Broadband with a Static IP and host my own downloads. This could see my upload speed go from about 0.5mb/s max to 16mb/s max, and would get rid of the downsides of Mega.nz and GDrive. However, I'd be in charge of technical support, and a potential power cut (I've had like 3 in 2 years) would knock it offline. I could do a GDrive or a Mega backup just in case of this though.
Option 5:
Other. If you have a better idea, let me know!
I'm leaning toward Option 4, but I'd appreciate any feedback or problems from your points of view, as I wasn't even aware mega was causing an issue until people let me know!
