The Jedi Mind trick is all about avoiding conflict and bloodshed which is not the way of the dark side in general. The Sith approve of more invasive means and techniques that emphasize pain and brute force. Also I believe Maul chose not to use the force outwardly during the duel so that he can prove to the other Deathwatch members that he indeed won based on pure combat skill based on ancient Mandalorian Traditions all the more easier to convince them of his superiority and worthiness so he was thinking ahead for the future. Mandalorians generally can hold their own and put up a fight against Jedi since they have a history of waging war against them so it's no surprise Pre Vizsla can at least put up a fight against Maul.
