I always thought that we were supposed to interpret the blue aura as signifying that Trunks learned how to partially access god ki (or some kind of it) by fighting along side the blue forms and knowing there are levels above the usual super saiyan transformations, but it wasn't proper training with proper gods, thus the form is incomplete or unfinished.
