Ken was spot on, almost everyone wanted to give Zavala a hug with what he was going through. His grief and guilt that he had held onto for so long had now finally manifested into a twisted version of his wife that tormented him. Zavala's story is pretty heartbreaking and Bungie did a really good job at tugging on our heartstrings this season and yet in his story and this season overall, lies a reminder for us in the real world. It can be so difficult to forgive ourselves for the mistakes we made and we don't properly teach people that and how it takes time for us to do so, but eventually, at some point or another, we need to make peace with our demons.

Thinking about it now, Zavala's story loosely reminds me of Shin Malphur (used to hunt down Dark Guardians, the Drifter is afraid of him). Shin, practically a newborn, was killed by the Fallen while the group he and his parents were apart of fled from a raiding party. An unpartnered Ghost that had been traveling with the refugee group felt compelled to revive - of all the dead bodies it had come across in its travels - this child, who could not even form words and was incapable of showing devotion, bravery, or sacrifice. And yet, Hakim - this young man who has ostensibly displayed all three tenets of being a Guardian while defending his family - was not deemed worthy of being raised by the Traveler. Safiyah, who devoted her life to saving others as a surgeon in spite of the dangers, was not deemed worthy. While there's no way to know if Zavala had ever heard the story of Shin Malphur in his centuries alive (even after he became Commander of the Vanguard), I think it would have been another thing to break him here, on top of the Hive being given the Light.
