The funny thing is shipping characters is such a RWBY FNDM(fandom) hobby that most of the ships have names, even between characters who have never met in the show. The ship name for Jaune x Ren is Martial Arcs

Harley Johnston

Ken &/or Beth having semblances run in the family is only for Schnees (Weiss' family). Most people have different semblances.

Harley Johnston

you know what's funny he was actually right he did say no more grenchens and it was a hasel and grettle thing grechin is his sister who died on a mission at beacon academy hazel held ozpin responsible its the whole reason hazel joined Salem I believe hazel said no more grenchins saying no more pointless death pehaps on both sides

SK- Eferthigra

If that is true, it's cool that they knew the exact actress they wanted and if they couldn't get her than no one would speak her lines. But I agree, a nice happy accident if that is true because Neo not talking just fits so well 🙂

Bethany and Ken

Harriet does suck, yes, but I do think she was a different person once. In the chapter when she was arguing with Winter about whether or not to let Yang and the others go into Monstra to find Oscar, she said "When people die, you move on. Replace them, like Marrow did for Tortuga, and Winter did for -" before Ren interrupted her and said no one was replaceable. Harriet is based on the Hare from the "Tortoise and the Hare" and "Tortuga" is Spanish for Tortoise. If Atlas is still keeping to the way Beacon does things, then every student would have both a partner and a team - so was Harriet's partner killed, and then Marrow just slotted into to replace him? That could explain some of her coldness. She is still grieving her partner so she shut herself down to not get attached to others again.

Oh I've had a man crush on Jaune since he wore that dress and danced his heart out. It's been a bumpy ride with him at times, but his growth in the show has been so much fun to watch 🤩 I guess I was just surprised it took Ren this long to figure it out and look at him with admiration like that 🤗

Bethany and Ken

Yes he is. Maybe it can rub off on some of the other Ace Ops 🤗

Bethany and Ken

We are terrible with names but not sure why I didn't make the jump that Gretchen was his sister 🤗

Bethany and Ken

😂 I almost didn't say anything about it because I didn't want it to seem like I was forcing them together or that the writers wanted them to end up together. I just saw a moment in the way it was animated and was wondering if anyone else saw it haha 🤗😇

Bethany and Ken

One thing I read (is it true?) is that they originally wanted Sarah Silverman, couldn't/didn't get her, and instead just went with not having a voice at all -- which I think has been really great and made Neo so unique.

Jennywocky

Yeah being able to watch episodes so quickly is a luxury. Especially with Netflix releasing them all at once or Amazon releasing three at once. It's almost rare these days to have to wait episode to episode 😅

Bethany and Ken

Interesting thought on how to take care of Salem. But eventually Emerald would die. And she couldn't sleep either so they would need to find multiple people with Emerald's semblance. Semblances run in the family right? 🤔

Bethany and Ken

Might have to read Roman Holiday for some more Neo because she is such a great character and not in the show enough. Feels like it would be easier to have more of her since they don't need a voice actor 🤗

Bethany and Ken

Marrow is the puppy Ace Op right? He's the one decent Ace op. The others either suck like Harriet or are just meh lap dogs. So we have hope he comes to his senses. And Winter we know will make the right decision in the end, or at least, we have faith she will. 🤗 Hazel is a survivor and Hazel seemed to have someone new to point his rage at. Will be interested to see if Hazel actually contributes or is she just stands on the sidelines 🤔

I love that you guys not only heard "No more Gretchens" correctly, but also made the connection to Hansel and Gretel, and then dismissed the idea anyway. :) It's been so much fun seeing you living through the show for the first time! I do hope that you're able to bank a few episodes before releasing them, even on here though. Knowing what's ahead and how excited we are as fans of the show, I'm worried that there will be well-intentioned accidental spoilers in comments over the next few weeks. And Ken, I think you're projecting your growing crush on Jaune...you and Ren do have similar names, after all. ;)

Callie Summers

Hazel went out like a gigachad. But now he and Gretchen can be together again on the other side. Edit: I also love Marrow rooting for Jaune and co. He is the goodest of bois!

DevilJynx

The worst cliffhanger of RWBY lol literally was so unfair & having to wait the week was torture 🤣 Hazel's story is Hansel & Gretal, his sister's name was Gretchen. So you were correct in hearing "no more Gretchen's boy", his sister died on a mission at a huntsman academy. He blames Oz because he believed the war against Salem is pointless, we first learned this in the finale fight in volume 5. He doesn't want more children blindly sent on these suicide missions basically. Emerald is an amazing addition to the crew & she always was the little girl with mommy issues who just needed to find the light. The end is near 👀

Chibi_Witch888

Oh no. Kens a Jaune x Ren shipper. Lol

Rinnzu Rosendale

It was "No more gretchins" gretchin was his sister that Oz got killed. He was basically saying, win this time and no more sending children to die.

Rinnzu Rosendale

Yeah, this was definitely an intense episode, I love that Yang is the only one of the four main girls that actually got a hit on Salem. Even if she did heal from it. The fight between Hazel and Salem was pretty awesome too. They definitely animated that very well. Many of us had the same reaction as Bethany when the episode ended. When it originally aired, we had to wait two weeks for the next episode!! Can't wait to see your reaction for the next one!!

Some of it will make sense once you read the novel

Mare

Yes there is a book released back in 2021 called RWBY: Roman Holiday. It's part of the RWBY novels that started with After the Fall, then Before the Dawn and Roman Holiday and all written by E. C. Myers (note: he collaborated with CRWBY on this and it's considered canon). Roman Holiday focuses on Neo's origins and why she's the way she is. I don't want to say anymore since it sort of ties in to last season that Rooster Teeth released.

Mare

Roman Holiday tells you A LOT more about Neo, as she's the main character, well her and Torchwick. It was published in 2021, which is a bit after volume 8 but before volume 9. The book takes place before the entire series though. I think Neo is supposed to be kind of off the wall and nonsensical, the things she does aren't supposed to make sense, aside from vaguely going towards revenge at this point.

Alex Smith

The... book? If there is a book it definitely released after the show, and I very much doubt that it tells us more than the current seasons. 🤔

HaruGrad

Came to say this lol

SkyReaper

Honestly I really don’t understand Neo as a character. I haven’t read the book, but I feel like the choices she makes have absolutely no logic in terms of getting what she wants.

SavvySpark

Just thought of a solution to the unkillable Salem problem. A prison in which a semblance like Emeralds is used to give Salem what she wants, and basically trap her in a dream. Maybe if Emerald upgraded her semblance, or another character with something similar. I doubt they'll go that direction though Also, Neo has only ever had any sense of affection for Torchwick. Based on the book, I doubt she has any love of herself at all, probably more the opposite.

Alex Smith

Great cliffhanger, lol! But you'll see next time. :) The first few episodes of Season 8 felt very negative to me tonally (esp with the Ace Ops and Ren's mood) and even depressing. But then by episode 5, there is a shift. We see Penny's love for her dad + giving everything to get the comm tower up, Ren's attitude improves, Whitley shows goodness out from under his dad's thumb, Willow finds some strength... and now here a really noble shift with Hazel laying aside years of bitterness over his sister's death to do something honorable in her name. I love that he has taken Emerald (and also the other kids by default) under his wing, because it reflects his strongest ideal -- an ideal twisted by Salem to serve her, but now he reclaims it by sacrificing himself so the kids might escape. (It's actually reinforced by Marrow, who says, "They're just kids!" when seeing Neon and Flynt on the front lines. Maybe Hazel has a point -- Ozpin was grooming kids to fight wars against the Grimm, in his eyes. Hence his last words -- "No more GRETCHENS, boy," you were right the first time -- stop militarizing children for these hopeless wars. Thus Hazel lays aside his "vengeance" and places the future in OSCAR's care. "Let go, and do what Gretchen would have done, to honor her memory," is his final choice here.) And it is a suicide run from the start. He pumps himself so full of Dust there isn't any real way he's going to survive that much power coursing through him. But it gets the job done. I also love that he's holding Salem in a vertical fire, to emulate "burning a witch at the stake" -- "Witch" is the episode title. Winter perhaps is still fulfilling her duty under Ironwood, but she has something the "tin man" seems to lack: Compassion. She's finally starting to feel and care. Ironwood took the role of father figure for her, providing structure so she could escape and survive Jacques' being her father; but now she's evolving past being Ironwood's dutiful servant to reclaim her humanity. Yang is so fearless outwardly -- she goes for the kill on Salem, then she dares to call her out about all the needless death Salem has caused. I like how she receives Ren's comment with grace and accepts it (unlike Emerald). Emerald retains her rough edges even as she might be defecting. We've seen her more vulnerable around Hazel, understanding that he's like a big brother looking out for her (he's always done little things to help her), but she's haughty when she's afraid, even when it will create more friction for her -- she's even defiant to Salem despite being terrified of her (although in her favor, she really DOESN'T know what happened to the lamp). Oscar sticking around isn't just a brave move in risking death; he's already said this episode that he hates using magic because "I can feel [Ozpin and myself] merging faster when I do." But the need is great, and he does what needs to be done to save his friends. The kid is what, 14-15? Just remarkable. Never noticed any Ren/Jaune "thang", lol! I guess we'll see! I love Jaune stepping up recently. I don't feel like it is misplaced bravery -- remember when he suggested to Winter to send them inside as a recon group, Winter tells him she will blow the bomb whether he's still inside or not, and he just says in a quiet KNOWING voice, "I understand." I think he gets it, on most levels -- Pyrrha's death tore out his heart and he KNOWS that he could die too. But he's decided his course. His values are THAT important to him. He's aspiring to be like Pyrrha, even as Hazel is aspiring to be like Gretchen. Well, we know what Neo wants :D , and she will use the lamp to get it. If you ever do read "Roman Holiday," you'll get a better sense of Neo. Next episode (in fact the remainder of the season) continues this high quality of episodes, it's great.

Jennywocky

Imagine having to wait a week for that cliffhanger lol This was definitely up there with Weiss getting impaled in Volume 5.

DeAnthony Potts

I don’t think Ren is into Jaune like that as much as he’s just realizing how much he’s underestimated him. But I definitely can see how you’d interpret it that way. This honestly if you catch me on the right day may be my favorite episode of the series. Great balance of action and character moments, plus Yang finally acknowledging Summer as her mother for the first time since volume 2 is always great

SavvySpark

Gretchen was the name of Hazel's sister. What he said to Oscar was basically in reference to the loss of his sister.

Daemon Russell

I love your reaction to the abrupt ending here! I laughed so hard at Bethany's response, because it mirrored my own the first time I saw this episode when it first premiered! Actually, Hazel told Oscar "No More Gretchens". Gretchen was his sister, and he was telling Oz/Oscar "Make sure the students are fully trained before you send them out to fight. Don't send them into a dangerous mission before they're ready." Oz told Oscar in Vol 5 that Gretchen was killed during a routine training mission when she was a Beacon student, and Hazel swore vengeance because he blamed Ozpin for not training her enough and sending her out before Hazel thought she was ready. Emerald told Cinder that she had been working to develop her Semblance. In Vol 3, she had difficulty making her illusions work on more than one person at a time - just now she not only was able to momentarily fool Ren, Jaune, and Yang, but she was able to trick Salem. If anything was going to give it away, it was Oscar's awkwardness at not being able to impersonate Hazel. In that split second before the screen whited out, if you looked, Oz's green shield appeared around Oscar - to protect Oscar from whatever he just did. It's not a crush that Ren has on Jaune - its the fact that Jaune hasn't given up on Ren despite what Ren said a few episodes ago. In Vol 6, both he and Nora told Jaune that they were family and they didn't want to see him sacrifice himself because he didn't believe he was as worthy as Nora and Ren and Pyrrha. Ren and Jaune both view each other as the brothers they never had - Ren was an only child, and Jaune had 7 sisters and no brothers, and Jaune was also the youngest in his family, I believe. One thing you didn't really cover - shifting alliances. Hazel turned back to helping out the good guys. Emerald is helping, but out of self-preservation or a genuine change of heart remains to be seen. But what about Winter and Marrow? Marrow definitely seems to be having some doubts, even though he's falling back on his orders / duty for the time being. And Winter is definitely conflicted as we saw two weeks ago when she let Jaune, Ren, and Yang go and Ren saw her emotional state.

Megan Saunders

Hazel did say "No more Gretchen's boy...." Because he blames Ozpin for her death during training at Beacon. Essentially saying "no more dead children for your war."

Puns of War

He whispered no more Gretchens, Gretchen was his sister and what he meant was that he told Oz to make sure that no more children died for his cause. To not make the same mistake again.

Historia-Europa

This is honestly my favorite episode to watch people react to. That exact moment at the end. ::click:: time slows... fade to black "What happened!! ... ... ... Don't you dare end it..." ::And... ... Cut:: "That's a wrap people!" "... {Cut} Damn it!"

CMDRZero

Hazel did say 'No more Gretchen's boy' referring to his sister and saying no more dead children
