While Harriet is not a likable character, it is worth remembering the timeframe that this happens in. While Volume 7 spanned weeks or months, Volume 8 is contained within a period of maybe 48 hours. Clover's body would still be a little warm if he hadn't died in the snow and that would mean that the reactions to his death are still extremely fresh. The big issue is that they didn't give any actual indication about what he meant to Harriet before this, she just spends an entire volume in pure anger mode, lashing out for reasons that are never established beforehand. She is reacting to his death in the same way that Salem reacted to Ozma's - she is lashing out at everything she can without any care who it hurts. She was never a likable character, she was never meant to be, but she could have been done better with even a tiny hint that her feelings about Clover were more than strictly professional. As for Ironwood, the tear made sense, even after as far as he's fallen. Winter was his right hand, his confidant, almost family - Jaques even accused him of stealing his daughter. No matter how far he fell, he thought she had his back, that of all people, she would understand him and stand with him. Even after fighting against him, here in this moment, he wanted to believe that she wouldn't fight him. Despite the fact that they're not related by blood, he is facing a fight to the death with the closest thing he has to a daughter.

2024-10-05 18:08:01 +0000 UTCAs a „Blake is my favorite“ or rather was my favorite i have to agree. Her part in the story was…not that great since volume 6, after beeing a big part in 4 & 5 i still love her (and miss her beautiful hair!) but also she didn‘t really kick ass anymore since volume 3 with some exceptions (dragon snake ocean grimm v4 and adam v6) and that also kinda sucks :( like…she got solod by a bug grimm this volume 😭

2024-09-29 23:22:57 +0000 UTCSo, I call this whole Volume The Shitshow : Part 3 for a reason. Part 1 was the end of Volume 3 and the fall of Beacon, Part 2 was the end of Volume 7, Part 3 is the entirety of this Volume because it's a barrage of losses for our protagonists. Which is great for a story, of course, having the good guys go through hardships and showing that they're not OP is a great thing, it's just a lot to take in when you're really invested in the story. The soundtrack this episode tends to come back in my head from time to time, especially during the fight against Cinder and Neo.

2024-09-29 21:00:49 +0000 UTCI think Ironwood is just 100% locked in by Mettle at this point, like he knows if he drops it (if he even can) that he'll just fall apart and not be able to do anything at all. And that tear was his real emotions that are being suppressed leaking through, because I think having to hurt or kill Winter, is literally the last thing on the planet he would want to do. I do think the tear would have worked for Winter too though.

2024-09-29 18:05:30 +0000 UTCyeah I have always hated Cinder when she broke my heart over Pyrrha so many seasons ago... but we need her to be a great villain and she rose to the occasion in the ending episodes of Season 8. Watts forced her to do a lot of soul-searching and up her game.

2024-09-29 16:20:37 +0000 UTCYeah Jacques being disgraced and imprisoned is what he deserved. Getting blown up like that was just showing Ironwood being more of a villain....even if the way it was portrayed was kind of funny 🤗😇

2024-09-29 16:09:31 +0000 UTCCinder is so fun this season. It and the end of V7 are what me retroactively ADORE her. Harriet... I've always appreciated what they're trying to do with her. She's like Raven where she clearly doesn't mean what she says. Her and Elm got close to team RWBY and then had to justify to themselves that now they were foes. Marrow felt bad about it. Vine had always kinda kept them at arms length (and his arms are long) so has no issues changing his thinking when something feels right. Harriet's clearly been burned over and over again by the military industrial complex that is Atlas, losing Tortuga probably hurt a lot but she realised she had to put on a brave face and keep going. (I do think they could have done small things to get this across better but I do enjoy the attempt)

2024-09-29 11:28:34 +0000 UTCIf I had a nickel for every time Robyn attacked while someone was trying to talk down and Ace Ops on an airship etc etc. tbf this time she didn't know what Vine was doing but it's still sad that he seemed to be getting somewhere

2024-09-29 11:25:33 +0000 UTCThe "I don't think you're supposed to laugh at that" killed me 🤣🤣 Harriet just proves that she's the worst character every time she's on screen. Robin literally crashing in on Vine attempting to get through to Harriet then Qrow just busting in the window is amazing. We love Neo but damn does she suck, she's just easy to love & was originally never supposed to be an important character but the commcommunity loved her. Ironwood vs Winter is so poetic. He lost sight of what was actually right to do & Winter now has to make up for letting it go on for so long. This episode is wild & is a set up for an amazing & heartbreaking finale. Warning for the feels, it's gonna hurt.

2024-09-29 06:36:51 +0000 UTCHarriet's character is a bit of an oddball to me and I'm not sure if that's on purpose from a writing standpoint. There's clearly more going on there with her feelings, she may have even loved Clover since that's what they seem to be hinting at. But it's just never explored which is why it's so easy to hate her lol. I might have personally liked her if she had some depth to that anger and blind loyalty but she's just a wreck Cinder though...I REALLY like her writing this season. Every time I've feared her as a true villain has been when she's been patient with her plans, striking when everyone's guard is down. The fall of Beacon was one of those instances, and this episode reminded me of that. Ever since she lost to Raven, she's been impulsive and impatient just to get back on Salem's good side quickly. Now we see her making her own rational decisions and it's genuinely something to worry about

2024-09-29 04:04:03 +0000 UTC“Ironwood, now with 100% psycho-dick” This immediately took me back to an exchange between the RWBY cast & crew and a fan during an old RWBY panel at one of Rooster Teeth’s annual conventions years ago. During the panel Q&A a fan asked of Ironwood: “What’s in his pants?” Arryn Zech (Blake’s VA and innocent cinnamon roll): “…what?” Kara Eberle (Weiss’ VA): “Well, his name IS ‘Ironwood’, so I don’t know…” Arryn: “WHAT ?!?”

2024-09-28 20:35:31 +0000 UTCSo yeah, definitely a lot to process in this episode. Seeing Yang fall off the edge after all this time still gives me trauma! But what makes it worse is seeing the absolute devastation and heartbreak on Blake's face. Because of the promise that Blake and Yang made in vol. 6, that they would always protect each other. Blake feels like she failed. One of my least favorite characters is Neo, I never liked her to begin with. Her only storyline throughout the entire series so far is her obsession with getting revenge on Ruby, only because Cinder manipulated her into thinking Ruby killed Torchwick. As for Harriet, I absolutely hate her with a passion! The fact that she suggested that Clover would actually go through with a mission that would kill hundreds of innocent people for no reason is more than enough proof that she deserves to die. One last thing, PLEASE nobody spoil anything for next episode or volume 9!

2024-09-28 18:48:54 +0000 UTCIronwoods dynamic character development, story, changes, and the reasons behind it all are the reasons why in my opinion he is the best written character in RWBY... even if we all hate him rn 😜

2024-09-28 18:13:27 +0000 UTC"I've never wavered in fighting the enemies of this kingdom... and I won't stop now." Winter will never be on the wrong side again. Ironwood's tears are really about telegraphing that HE feels like she's betrayed him (his last unwavering support), while despite everything he was to her, Winter has moved on. We've seen her in prolonged fights before (vs Qrow, vs Cinder) and she is AMAZING... but as you note, Ironwood is on another level. Winter knows that, and she's so spent already. But she won't relent. She won't regret. I love her so much. Ironwood nuking Jacques: Its Schnee's cluelessness in poking the bear, when we know Ironwood no longer has any F's to give, is part of why it's both shocking and yet hilarious. True, Ironwood's weapons should have been in impound, but I doubt anyone is on site now and Watts would have unlocked them anyway. While I've been a Harriet hater too, I felt like this episode really cracked her open. To play off your comments about laughing because otherwise this episode is painful and scary, Harriet deals with pain by being angry and ridiculing others for caring. We now realize it's because she never dealt with her own grief over losing Tortuga (aka "turtle," Marrow's predecessor and Hare's "counterpart") and now Clover -- maybe even others we're not aware of. Her level of caring actually rivals her feigned indifference. RWBY as a show is focused on exploring how some people work through trauma and grow from it, while others refuse to accept loss and compound everyone's misery. It's tragic that as Vine reaches Hare and almost talks her down, Robyn inadvertently interrupts the moment. But yeah, she's been so awful, sympathy might be difficult. Re: Neo -- see Harriet. Oscar remembering Weiss' instructions to Ambrosius might be an actual continuity error, as he wasn't there (only RWBY and Penny were), but it does help the viewers realize what happened. Watts is very effective for not being a warrior; he almost single-handedly derails the heroes' efforts. Remember when Ironwood tells him in "Gravity" that he's "always been a pain in the ass"? Lol. I love the music juxtaposition when Cinder and the others take the command center. Plus, other little details -- Watts wipes blood off the apple before eating it, and there's a shot of Bill's coffee mug ("#1 Dud") upended on the floor. Poor Bill. This episode is called "Worthy" (Watts' jibe against Cinder a few episodes back) and this episode is about Cinder reestablishing her worth by helping her teammates (Watts and Neo) and being a true foil for Team RWBY. She's risen to the occasion. And despite our knowing she's a victim of abuse herself, we're reminded she's irremediably evil when she kills a bunch of innocent refugees (without auras) as a strategy move, raining their corpses into an abyss. She has no love in her heart. It's scary watching Penny; she was supposed to leave with the Maiden powers, but she is unwilling to abandon her friends. Still, she's no longer made of metal but flesh and isn't used to that vulnerability. She's also nowhere near Cinder's skill level with her powers and mostly just has been emulating her old mechanical abilities as a fallback. Elm was already cuffed and isn't fast, so she couldn't catch up with Hare and Vine and board the ship in time. There were a bunch of ships sliding out of the bay, Hare just hopped on the one with Ironwood's nuke (of course!). I got your back, Ken -- I don't have anything against Blake but she's my least favorite of Team RWBY too, lol!

2024-09-28 18:02:03 +0000 UTCIf an antagonist is making you feel intense rage and hatred for them, they're doing a damn good job being a villain.

2024-09-28 17:53:58 +0000 UTCI love V7 Harriet. Just a cocky, fun badass who causes Ruby to rethink her semblance ab it. But V8 Harriet got real one dimensional real fast.

2024-09-28 17:43:10 +0000 UTCI feel like if Cinder had a theme song it'd be WWE's guy Randy Orton's "Voices" She has lost a lot of the time, but we saw how devious and cunning she can be in V2 and V3 and she lost that edge, but now it seems like she got it back. Also I am convinced that Salem is the main antagonist, but Cinder is The Final Boss. 4:27 Me: Oh shit they just walked into an attack by The Tomb Kings from Warhammer Fantasy... 17:52 YO I WAS KIDDING! Sheesh! Frickin Grimm bats and whatever those little doods are called; something fish. I gotta ding RWBY's writing for keeping Ironwood's weapons right outside of his cell. Like... That makes ORNJ and Winter look incompetent. I like this volume, not my favorite, but I like it, but I gotta call a spade a spade; they made the main protags look really dumb leaving those weapons there. As much as I hated Jacques, I did not want him to die. He was a douche and an assbag, but what Ironwood did was just disgusting. Killing a man who cannot defend himself is the act of a coward and a psychopath. 15:05 "I still don't care" You said that so deadpan! XD I'm with you though, Harriet was such a damn pest! But damn that delivery had me rolling! See you all for the V8 finale next week!

2024-09-28 17:02:09 +0000 UTCHarriet is, in my opinion, the worst character in the Atlas arc, zero redeeming qualities, basically no good moments. She's just not a good character- don't blame you for hating her, i know i did lol. I personally really liked that this episode was called Worthy - the audience might think its relating to the heroes but nope...it's a callback to Watts' telling Cinder she has to be worthy....and in my opinion this is the episode in which she truly cements herself as the TRUE villain of the series, THE arch-nemesis, the only one worthy of being called the main antagonist.
Hononotenshi
2024-09-28 17:00:21 +0000 UTChonestly it was here that Cinder in my opinion became the true villain of the series once more.

2024-09-28 16:52:45 +0000 UTCI adore the smash cut in Central Command, this episode is full of cute cinematography IMO say what you want about Harriet but she's driven to get that paycheck :P (her and Neo have that hustle in them which I'd love if they weren't using it for insane purposes. Both all cause of a man lmao) like, I can't not love her almost beating Ruby with her hands tied "Harriet, you are not the only one" damn Vine loved Clover too, who didn't apparently (/s) I've always wished Winter was carrying Ironwood's guns instead of leaving them there, would potentially make their upcoming battle more interesting. But I guess the cells had never failed before so she wouldn't expect them to.
Lucifer_Crowe
2024-09-28 16:48:25 +0000 UTCI don't think Harriet was ever supposed to be liked. Giving the Clover angle is less redeeming and more just... providing necessary structure to her decisions. Loyalty just would not be believable at this juncture, effectively bombing a rapidly emptying city to no effect WHILE her general is imprisoned (to her knowledge). There had to be something else. So we're given that something else. We don't care but it's good to have nonetheless. Being the Hare from the Tortoise and the Hare fable, she's impulsive, short sighted, impatient, and inconsiderate. Even had they wanted to I don't think there's any way to write that character in a likeable way.
Jeff
2024-09-28 16:47:53 +0000 UTCCinder is the worst, but that is why she is my favorite villain on the show.

2024-09-28 16:30:35 +0000 UTCSeriously... What kind of trained operative sees a laser dot in front of them, watches it track towards them, and then continues to stand there? What the hell Winter?!
