And yet, just like Han, Robyn shot first.

2024-10-21 18:25:22 +0000 UTCHmm, I remember Clover going after Qrow when Tyrian was right in from of him as well. He prioritized trying to apprehend Qrow over teaming up with him temporarily to take down a literal evil psychopath. And look where that got him.

2024-10-20 17:33:10 +0000 UTCMan imagine irl there's a world wide broadcast from the U.S. saying, "You know how there's been so much war and strife in the world? Well that's because this evil entity that's existed since the beginning to recorded history has been plotting against us. We're under attack and we might not survive, so send help or prepare for what's coming." And then 24 hours later the entire country is just fucking gone
No Consequence
2024-10-19 20:16:55 +0000 UTCHmm, I remember Clover and Qrow starting to talk things out until a certain self-important person decided to kick things off before they could come to a resolution.

2024-10-10 15:59:05 +0000 UTCWhen i first watched this episode i felt so much dread. Penny will always be my favorite character as she’s the one that hat always makes the big decisions. This was the fall of Beacon all over again. Loved your reaction tho and I look forward to your watch through of volume 9.

2024-10-08 19:11:35 +0000 UTCI love to think that if Ironwood had gotten the staff and he asked Ambrosius to send Atlas 'up' without being specific he would've flung Atlas into space, suffocating everyone

2024-10-08 08:09:52 +0000 UTCNah I'd blame Clover himself for prioritsing stupid orders over doing the right thing

2024-10-07 18:05:24 +0000 UTCTo be fair, we're still in the Act 2 of this story so there was bound to be a lot of loss in this phase. Especially since this is considered long form story telling. The Vacuo Arc looks like it will be an Act 3. But definitely looking forward to your Volume 9 reactions. It's definitely a shift from the norm. Or what the showrunner Kerry had mentioned, "A Detour" LOL

2024-10-07 10:14:57 +0000 UTCQrow was also shouting out Yang's name right after Ruby's. It's just the animated mouth isn't as enunciated

2024-10-07 10:11:42 +0000 UTCI've kept trying to think of a different metaphor that doesn't completely fall apart if you stretch it too far. But I've considered the combining of souls to be not so much .. addition, but more like repeated averaging. So like, you get Ozma who's a .. I dunno, a 1.0 And then the next person he re-incarnates into is a 0.0. Once they finish merging, there's basically one new entity (albeit with multiple memories) whose overall self is a 0.5. And this person dies and reincarnates into someone who's 0.8, and after _that_ merge, they become the new entity 0.65. If you stretch the metaphor you could imagine every personality trait has a number from 0 to 1 and they all balance between the previous and the new personality that gets added. Obviously this is wildly simplified, but it's sort of how I like to conceive of it. I imagine that every merge, a new balance is found. Depending on how closely they align and how forceful the personality, it might not be "just the average". Maybe a weighted average (c: But we've seen already, that it feels like Ozpin has learned from his time with Oscar, and while Oz's life (lives) may have led to him dealing with problems a certain way, needing a certain amount of control, thinking a certain way, Oscar has already influenced the Ozpin in his head in several ways. Sure, it still seems like a scary situation and one I'm not envious of, but it's hard to imagine Oscar being completely taken over in this merge, just from how we've been able to observe it progressing.

2024-10-07 08:08:38 +0000 UTCI don't blame Harriet, I blame Robyn. Without her, Clover would still be alive and half the events of Volume 8 wouldn't have happened.

2024-10-07 03:15:20 +0000 UTCIn the end, the tin man (ironwood) lost his heart.
Christine Dzioba
2024-10-06 18:36:57 +0000 UTCIs it for sure a 50/50 merger? Or is it just Oscar's soul getting added to the mixture of souls that makes up Oz? If it's the former then enough of Oscar should still be around. If it is the latter then Oscar's soul/personality is pretty much being taken over because he will be 1 out of, let's say 100 souls. And those 100 souls are what made up the personality of the entity we knew as Ozpin. Meaning Ozpin was closer to the finished product. Best example I can think of is imagine Ozpin is 100 bottles of Orange Juice in a tub mixed together. If you put in one bottle of Cranberry juice. Sure the mixture might taste a little different, but it will still mostly taste like Orange Juice 🤗

2024-10-06 17:19:16 +0000 UTCYeah Qrow shouting Ruby's name was tough to watch. And good call about the whereabouts of the Fourth Maiden, hadn't thought about that 😯🤔
Bethany and Ken
2024-10-06 17:16:53 +0000 UTCYeah that was indeed some impressive power from Vine to be able to pull that off 😯
Bethany and Ken
2024-10-06 17:14:06 +0000 UTCYeah the merger is still murky to us in the sense of how much of the person's personality remains. Even if Ozpin isn't exactly taking over completely Oscar. In a way the entity of Oz is taking over because Oscar as we know him won't be the same. And since there are now, what, 100 souls or more occupying the same space with how long Oz has been around, then it's fair to assume it won't exactly be a 50/50 split. 🤔
Bethany and Ken
2024-10-06 17:12:58 +0000 UTCDig the episode titles playing into Cinder's arc 🙂
Bethany and Ken
2024-10-06 17:08:04 +0000 UTCRegarding Oscar and Ozpin, its true that the more they merge the more they lose themselves but its not just Oscar thats losing himself its Ozpin too. They bleed into each other and the result is a new person/personality. Ozpin was the result of his previous life's merge and whatever results of this merge will be the new personality. I think you guys just had a small misunderstanding of their explanation, its not like Ozpin is totally subsuming Oscar. The new personality should be just as much Oscar as it is Ozpin, or at least thats my best guess.

2024-10-05 23:36:53 +0000 UTCits a one way ticket to vacuo specifically neo went through back to Atlas you can go through those portals all you want its how Juan and the rest informed everybody what the portals did
SK- Eferthigra
2024-10-05 23:17:32 +0000 UTCThe one-way ticket is only valid for the Vacuo direction. Jaune and Nora also used the portals to get to Atlas and back. I love your reaction and look forward to a new RWBY episode every week.

2024-10-05 22:59:42 +0000 UTCThey were going back and forth between the entrance portals just fine. its only when you go through the exit portal in the desert that you get stuck.

2024-10-05 21:59:00 +0000 UTCI thought that a long time ago before I realized Neo doesn’t have much going on upstairs. I may have actually liked Neo as a character if they’d had her playing Cinder.

2024-10-05 21:53:45 +0000 UTCTo be fair, I thought it would be Neo betraying Cinder.

2024-10-05 21:39:00 +0000 UTCSo here's where we stand right? Salem has 2 relics and the heroes have squat. Of the other 2, one is locked in Shade's Vault and the other is ...well we don't know. One Maiden is on Salem's side, one on the hero's side, one loose cannon (Raven) and one unknown (to us). Vale is alive but Beacon fell...we don't really know what kind of state any Vale huntsmen are in, besides our heroes of course. Mistral is alive and Haven...well I guess it still stands but we know that a majority of the huntsmen (including Haven staff) are dead thanks to Lionheart. If Salem wanted to destroy the kingdom, it would be all too easy. Altas is gone, along with probably a majority of its huntsmen and army. Vacuo (and Shade), therefore is the only fully functional kingdom left. This is essentially Remnants last chance. It always cracks me up when people say the heroes in this show never lose.
Serpent King
2024-10-05 21:30:38 +0000 UTCSomething I've always liked in the subtext of the show too. Everyone calls Salem "Master". She's so powerful she defies gender norms. Everyone of course, except Tyrian. Who is in love with her, so calls her Mistress with very likely sexual undertones. One of my favourite little details.

2024-10-05 21:28:15 +0000 UTCI feel like this volume is the equivalent of Avengers Infinity War. I'm still pissed that Harriet survived, she 100% should've died. There is absolutely nothing that she can do that would redeem herself. The guy at the end that was trapped in the burning building was Arthur Watts. The last thing that Cinder said to him was "you deserve this Arthur". Then she locked him inside and caused everything to go up in flames. When Watts said back in episode 10 that Cinder can't just be strong, she has to be smart. Cinder definitely took those words to heart. Can't wait for you to start volume 9, my absolute favorite episode of the entire series is in vol. 9!

2024-10-05 21:11:16 +0000 UTCEl plan perfecto. Cinder finalmente hizo algo bien.

2024-10-05 20:48:07 +0000 UTCJaune's VA does an amazing job at projecting pain, even since V3. This Volume's opener is another one that basically just tells you how shit everything is going to end up lol. The V8 soundtrack has a lot of good stuff on it though

2024-10-05 20:04:39 +0000 UTCNeo got knocked through one of the small portals that just leads to Atlus/Mantle. You can go in and out of those portals no problem. But the big one in the middle that leads to Vacuo, once you enter there is no coming back.

2024-10-05 20:04:38 +0000 UTCI was actually very pleased with Cinder as a villain in this last stretch of episodes. She was finally able to make a plan, execute, and come out on top while taking down anyone who was in her way. I missed this competent Cinder as a villain who isn’t just an eyesore to me on screen cause I know she’s a failure. She had mostly lost her threat to me as soon as she lost to Raven and got frozen but that has now returned. Excited to see what comes next in her greed of wanting it all.

2024-10-05 19:30:36 +0000 UTCTo be fair we all have been laughing at cinders failure a lot till this episode. She kinda earned it lowkey lol

2024-10-05 19:02:02 +0000 UTCYou're in for a good ride - Volume 9 starts off pretty weak, but finds it's footing after the first 2-3 episodes and the later half is amongst the best of the series.

2024-10-05 18:37:42 +0000 UTCThe 'And that's checkmate' from Cinder to Ironwood as they leave always reminds me of Salem's quip to Cinder in episode 1 "Just because you are more valuable to me than a pawn, does not make you a player". Ironwood thought of himself as Salem's opponent and realised in that moment that he was merely one of the white player's pawns.

2024-10-05 18:26:52 +0000 UTCSooo the one way thing only applies to the giant portal to vaccuo. Neo went through a different one of the random small ones :)

2024-10-05 18:16:15 +0000 UTCThis episode's name is The Last Word, which the final word spoken was "checkmate". To expexplain the doors, the Atlas/Mantle doors are two-way but the big door in the center was the door to Vacuo is a one-way, that's how Jaune & Nora were leading people through. It was so satisfying to watch the defeat of Ironwood & you're right, it's satisfying to see them treat him like nothing because he fell exactly for their plan. His defeated look on his face at the end was him realizing it. Volume 9 is the fairy tale arc, CRWBY always wanted the chance to do something like it. There's some extra love in Volume 9 because it was possibly going to be the end because of Rooster Teeth going under. Penny dying is heartbreaking & so unfortunately poetic. It was beautiful to watch her story & she was just too pure for Remnant. The end credits song is "Friend" & has lots of callbacks to Penny moments & her relationship with Ruby. They REALLY twisted the knife 😭

2024-10-05 17:57:55 +0000 UTCYou guys both looked so tense going into this -- it definitely is a hard first-watch. Re: The Portal. Weiss's "one-way ticket to Vacuo" applies to only the Vacuo portal. All the feeder portals into the central location were two-way portals, and we saw this in the last episode where people could go back and forth. Neo was knocked into a feeder portal. Vine's sacrifice to save his friends and Mantle is another one of those redemptive moments dominating the second half of this season. Despite Harriet being entirely at fault, Vine gently passes her back to Elm so they can escape. He's a compassionate man who finally knows what he values. This lesson will stick with Harriet. Also a big moment for Qrow to see good luck happen with Clover's pin in stopping the bomb; maybe he can trascend his pessimism? Penny has always been the most selfless person, the best of them all, even when mechanical. Her life was secondary compared to protecting Mantle and her friends, and she's offered her life in the past. Her loss still felt hopeful, compared to Pyrrha -- Penny chose the manner of her passing and actually achieved her goals, so it felt like an affirmation (not dismissal) of her life. She is so wonderful with Winter. Curious to hear your thoughts next week on the season closer song. :) If Jaune survives, this moment will haunt him regardless. Poor Jaune. It wasn't fair. Winter was not ready to be the Winter maiden last season, being under Ironwood's thumb. This season, she found honor and purpose in her life without being a Maiden, and also became fully autonomous -- finding the value of humanity and emotion along with her ability to make cold hard decisions. Such a beautiful arc between her and Penny -- the robot girl with a heart becoming human, and the robot-like woman learning the value of love and emotion. I love how Winter dismisses Ironwood once she has the power; he had been stronger, now she swats him down like a bug, and you can see it in his eyes right before it happens. Winter will be terrifying as a Maiden, with her skill and her ferocity: "You... are going to pay... for EVERYTHING you've done!!" [So we have Cinder, Raven, Winter, and....? Where is the last Maiden hiding?] It hurts to see Nora banging on the Vacuo gate futilely, then sagging to her knees in despair -- but look at Emerald (!), she's remained true. Also, Qrow shouting Ruby's name (if you read his lips) as he watches it all go down, and he has no idea where they are...sigh. I don't think Salem believes anything Cinder says either... but Salem doesn't care, because she just wants all four relics to achieve her goal. Cinder got her those. I love they ignore Ironwood as no threat whatsoever. It's worse than killing him; he's harmless and irrelevant, and he dies with full awareness of his utter failure. [I've read this moment was conceived very early, way back in the first few seasons of RWBY.] Also, the episode is called "The Final Word" and the final audible word of the episode is "Checkmate." Cinder didn't forget Watts in the end, lol. She still finished him off, just AFTER she proved she was indeed "worthy" after all. Good comments about Joffrey and Cersei -- yeah, GoT (first four seasons) did find a way to humanize many of its villains. As awful as Joffrey and Cersei were, it's hard watching the fear in Joffrey's face in the final moments and the agony in Cersei's as she can't do anything to help him. They are just mother and child in that moment. Best characters for me this season were Penny, Winter, Ironwood, Oscar, and then (as a composite) all of the characters who found a redemptive moment (Hazel, Vine, Emerald, Marrow, Ren). I still bawl every time I watch Penny and Winter's final moment together too. Also, please don't overlook Robyn Hill (lol), as everyone always does -- she was such a foundation for Qrow and kept him on a good path.

2024-10-05 17:14:56 +0000 UTCOne thing that I really loved from this volume was that it gave the impression that Cinder had learned it's better to stand at the top with others rather than alone. Then the way she, in fact, did not learn that lesson, makes me appreciate how truly far gone she is.

2024-10-05 17:11:15 +0000 UTCSeeing the entire kingdom of Atlas get wiped out and flooded in an instant is always impressive. Also, from this point I'm going to be mostly blind, as I've only seen the first 2 episodes of Volume 9, so that'll be fun.

2024-10-05 17:03:59 +0000 UTCThis was a rough episode the first time I saw it. We lost Vine because of Harriet's stupidity and stubbornness, we lost Penny because she made a choice when she realized if she didn't, Cinder might get the Winter Maiden power. The RWBY team and Jaune are somewhere unknown, after Ambrosius warned them not to fall. We lost Atlas, which was the most technologically advanced Kingdom of the four Kingdoms. Salem has two of the four relics. She can't get to the Beacon relic yet thanks to the way that Oz hid it (whatever that may be), which means Vacuo is next - and the Vacuo relic is the Sword of Destruction. And we lost Watts to Cinder's revenge - when she said she "added more fires to the flames of Atlas" - she basically sealed him in that control room without him realizing it. Of course, wherever RWBY and Jaune are, Neo is also there. The reason she could come back into the central location after Weiss smacked her back was because Weiss slapped Neo back to one of the portals to Atlas or Mantle. Those portals could be freely passed through either way - that was why Jaune and Nora were able to keep getting people out. It was only the portal from the Central Location to Vacuo that was one way. Also think about the impressive feat that Vine pulled off - not only did he extend his aura enough to encompass the whole shuttle, but after the bomb exploded right next to him - a bomb that had been intended for the Grimm whale, by the way - he was able to maintain his aura and CONTAIN THE EXPLOSION even as he was being burned to ashes in the explosion and kept it from harming Mantle or Robyn's shuttle at all - just to give them enough time to get out of the blast radius and buy any stragglers enough time to get through the portals. One more volume to go for now, but hopefully we'll get Volume 10 soon now that VIZ media owns the rights to it.

2024-10-05 16:54:56 +0000 UTCComment above already mentioned it but highlighting again- it was a "one way ticket to Vacuo" not a one-way door from both ends. Unfortunately our heroes phrasing caused the issue because Ambro is a literal genie. Edit: Oscar isn't exactly going to be "Taken Over" by Ozpin exactly- what is going to end up happening is they are going to merge and become indistinguishable from the other eventually. Imagine that we'll eventually see Oscar's character and he will have dominant traits of both Oscar and Ozpin, it'll be really hard to tell which of "them" is speaking. (also this isn't a spoiler because we haven't seen it yet, this was explained way back in like S5 or so; Oscar is rightfully terrified of how much will be him and how much will be Ozpin eventually)

2024-10-05 16:54:23 +0000 UTCshoutout to Harriet being passed over to Elm by Vine and looking like a big baby, god she's so funny on rewatches. Her VA has become one of my favourites.
Lucifer_Crowe
2024-10-05 16:51:32 +0000 UTCSo only one of the portals was a one-way portal. There are dozens of portals leading from Atlas and Mantle into the hub area, and then at the bottom of the hub area there's one big door to Vacuo, which Weiss described as "a one way ticket." Thanks, Weiss!

2024-10-05 16:45:43 +0000 UTCTo be fair to Winter about not helping Jaune out . She’d just lost her sister, so she probably wasn’t exactly thinking straight. She was just angry and running on adrenaline. Also Cinder betraying Neo? Who could possibly have seen that coming!? Except literally everyone.

2024-10-05 16:39:49 +0000 UTCI wanted Salem to at least kill Ironwood in a terrible fashion. One that kinda stuck in your head for weeks. OR made it more funny. Like she paused talking to Cinder after he shot and missed her and then she turns back around and keeps walking, "SO...anyway Cinder enlighten me about our prized staff" 🤣

2024-10-05 16:34:02 +0000 UTCFYI: Only the Vacuo door (big one at the end) was one-way. Jaune and Nora had been going in and out of the other ones in this and the last episode a fun note about these two eps actually, is that unless I'm missing something, it's Cinder and Blake's first time sharing screentime (fittingly ironic with their matching eyes and hair). They've shared locations but never a camera shot before. Cinder and Raven go downstairs in V5 before Blake arrives etc. There's shots in V3 of Cinder sitting behind Ruby (and Blake is like two people down as we see but isn't in frame.) this finale is very imperfect but there's still a lot of things I enjoy. Salem walking past Ironwood like he's nothing. Not the hero of the story he thought he was (iirc the writers mentioned they had that concept noted down for a WHILE) the stuff with the Ace Ops is MESSY but I like what they tried to do Penny dying again after all that work trying to keep her alive is something I don't hate but still rubs me the wrong way sometimes. Qrow not being able to contact the girls is heartwrenching but I honestly question if he would even if the plan had gone right. they'd be in another Kingdom and the CCT is still down.
Lucifer_Crowe
2024-10-05 16:32:37 +0000 UTCNeo was flung through a portal that lead back to Atlas. The wording was "One way ticked to Vacuo". So only the big main portal that leads to Vacuo is one way.

Manu
2024-10-05 16:24:33 +0000 UTCA thing I made about Cinder's arc in this volume using each of the episode titles: DIVIDE them Deny their REFUGE Pull the STRINGS Do not FAULT yourself Play your false AMITY MIDNIGHT tolls for the final hour This is WAR DARKness will fall Serve the WITCH Proclaim your ULTIMATUM RISK it all Make your CREATION Become WORTHY And then you'll have THE FINAL WORD Checkmate I believe as Jaune is genderbent Joan of Arc, Joan vowed to never spill the blood of the innocent and since Jaune did kill Penny(albeit not for malicious reason, but Penny was still an innocent.), his sword broke. I believe it's meant to be a subtle nod to Joan's noble sense of honor and chivalry. But yeah if V3 was Empire Strikes Back, this volume was Revenge of The Sith. Salem, despite losing Monstra, The Hound, Hazel, and Watts, is now at her apex; she is 50% to her end goal. Likewise, Cinder has not only redeemed herself in Salem's eyes, she has exceeded expectations. Salem knew Cinder was lying to her, but she did not care as the results obtained were everything she wanted.

2024-10-05 16:24:26 +0000 UTCNeon came back because only the door to vaccuo is a 1 way ticket, the other doors aren't. We saw Jaune last episode go through a portal to get civilians and got hit with the rock.

2024-10-05 16:23:28 +0000 UTCNeo was only able to come back through because it was an Atlas portal. The Atlas portals you can go in and out of, it was only the Vacuo portal that is a one way ticket. That’s how Jaune and Nora were helping evacuate people.
