Be Strong & Hit Stuff is more of a Nora song "like what? Be strong & hit stuff with a hammer?" Friend is obviously the twist of the knife lol it's the most adorable & heartbreaking Penny song we could've ever gotten. Balled up with a cute bow, just like Penny. The song Awake is in Cinder's story, it's by Casey's band Ok Goodnight. If the perfect song exists already, why make another? Lol

2024-10-19 07:30:00 +0000 UTCSeason 9 will be a wild ride in that regard, some deep and difficult (but meaningful!) stuff -- buckle up! :)

2024-10-13 16:54:50 +0000 UTCYou are correct the music is befitting the tone of this volume. There were some fun kick ass moments, like Winter finally taking on Ironwood, but most of it was our heroes getting their ass hand to them. Wasn't so much a knock on the choice of having the songs be sad, just that those aren't songs we gravitate towards so this soundtrack didn't appeal to us as much 🤗

2024-10-13 16:53:11 +0000 UTCThanks so much! Glad you enjoy the commentary afterwards. It's one of the reasons we love RWBY so much, really gets us thinking about the broader picture and life lessons and such. Great art has that affect 🙂

2024-10-13 16:49:21 +0000 UTCThanks for letting us know who each song is about. Even if some of it is only implied like Sky is Falling and Treasure. But it makes sense for both of those songs to be about who you said. Oscar for sure deserves a song for all he is going through

2024-10-13 16:49:04 +0000 UTCEvery time I sing "Friend" when I drive to work, I always tear up at the part when she sings, "Do hugs always make you feel this warm". 😭

2024-10-13 03:45:50 +0000 UTCThe lines in "Friend" after "We'll do so many friendship things" are a direct quote from Penny in Volume 1, right after Ruby called her friend. It's also what Weiss said to Ruby at the beginning of Volume 1 when Ruby was trying to be her friend.

👌🏻😉 Saludos 🇲🇽✌🏻

2024-10-12 22:06:33 +0000 UTC'Be strong and hit stuff' is Nora's song "Do what I do best huh? Like..Be strong and hit stuff?"

2024-10-12 22:00:57 +0000 UTC"Friend" is a good example of what I love about this show: in one song they made you feel simultaneously depressed and happy, healing while twisting the knife. I feel like that in and of itself is a pretty impressive feat. Also, love how every other line was a call back to a line from early in the show. "Be Strong and Hit Stuff" is primarily a Nora song, but is also supposed to apply to Emerald too. Also, probably also my favorite for something to just listen to, you know, without crippling depression. And I know people hate Cinder, but I'm still waiting for a full version of "The Truth", that will never come.

2024-10-12 18:40:42 +0000 UTCAh, Friend...since I've seen no one else point it out yet, the song ends abruptly on the line "A chance to share the world, to be a girl, who fin'ly felt alive"... A direct reference to the fact that she was given a real body, a real life. Then what, like half an hour later maybe? the chance to live that life is taken away from her. Penny really is the most tragic character in this show.

2024-10-12 18:39:29 +0000 UTCI get that there aren't really any happy songs for this volume...apart from maybe Be Strong and Hit Stuff...But I ask you...At what point was this volume happy? Having an upbeat song like that would be completely out of place here. Taking down Ironwood was about the only good thing that happened all volume. (and I guess killing Monstra, but there wasn't a song for that)

2024-10-12 17:45:35 +0000 UTCFor it being Jeff's final turn at making the OST. It's fitting that his opening this time references most of the other ones in the lyrics.

2024-10-12 17:39:26 +0000 UTCMusically, the Season 8 theme ("For Every Life") is pervasively depressing, although some of the lyrics are spot on -- I just think they fail to capture the beauty of sacrifices made later in the season and focus so much on the bad. Nora gets a song callout -- woo! (after she is scarred and badly hurt, she bemoans her group contributions: "Like what [do I offer]? Be strong and hit stuff") -- although the life lessons in it can apply to many more characters. Cinder's song ("The Truth") is haunting. While we now grasp where she's come from, it doesn't excuse the horrible deeds she continues to commit after having had opportunities to change or walk away. She has completely allowed that abuse to fill her with hatred and become an abuser in turn. "Treasure" is a beautiful performance and song. It plays during the reunion between Yang and Ruby at the Schnee mansion, after the group had split up with some tension early in the season and Yang fearing Ruby and Blake are mad at her. When Ruby tackles her, Yang just says, "I missed you too" -- and then, seeing Blake hiding sadly in the back, walks over and wordlessly puts her hand on her cheek. No disagreement or darkness is going to break the love they all have for each other. "Friends" is my favorite song this season. It starts as a dirge as Atlas crashes -- and then transitions into the Penny lietmotif (musically) and a celebration of her entire life as the final statement of Season 8. (What an amazing song for Jeff Williams to go out on, due to its emotional resonance, and it's hard to not cry while it plays.) Even in the face of loss and darkness, it suggests that beauty and innocence will endure and conquer. I personally believe that Penny's choices and her love for her friends will mean something important in the resolution of this story. Awake reflects on the musical sound of Season 9 but (you guys nailed it!) the riff from it plays during the fight between Cinder and Rhodes in "Midnight." Definitely captures the band's sound and how the music will change a bit next season. I really appreciate both of you and how candid your comments are, tying ideas from the show and music into how they can speak to our real lives.

2024-10-12 16:46:09 +0000 UTCGreat reaction! Couple of points - "For Every Life" (opening song) is really the only truly "dark" song that we've had as an opening number since Volume 3 and the Battle of Beacon, but it's still somewhat hopeful since it talks about being able to risk everything if it means saving every life possible. "Be Strong and Hit Stuff" is more of a Nora song. She said that line when she hit the door in the military base and absorbed all the energy that gave her the scars, and it describes how she was so uncertain about who she was without Ren. I don't know if it was 100% confirmed, but "The Sky Is Falling" (the second song) could be a reference to Oscar and the whole body-sharing / soul merge with Oz, since in the show the song plays during the chase scene where Jaune, Ren, and Yang are trying to get him back. "Treasure" - the one you identified as romantic... that one is implied to be Blake and Yang, since they were separated during the first half of the volume, and it played when they all reunited at Schnee Manor. You got Cinder's song with the "Clean the Kitchen", etc. But the final song "Awake" is also implied to be Cinder, even though it's the only one on the volume that wasn't written by Jeff Williams - it was written for Casey Lee Williams' band "OK Goodnight", but it fit with the show, so they put it in. They played it during the scene in Cinder's flashback episode when she was fighting her mentor after she killed her adoptive family. And of course, "Friend" was Penny's eulogy and her send off for the show. *cries* It speaks so much as to how lonely she was before Ruby stumbled into her life back in Volume 1 - and it's kind of amazing realizing Penny has been in the show for that long, even if there were 3 volumes we didn't actually have her since she was being rebuilt and then was in Atlas while everyone else was in Mistral. Next week Volume 9.... and then you will be caught up until Viz Media decides to release Volume 10...

2024-10-12 16:39:45 +0000 UTCThe last song “Awake” is by Casey’s band Ok, Goodnight . I’m guessing they included it on the soundtrack to give people a taste of what to expect when Jeff retired and Casey and her bandmate took over. “Friend” is the perfect bittersweet ending to Jeff’s time with RWBY imo
