A bit late, but not even the Fall, since long before that. Ruby has always been the positive girl. But, if you take all of her songs into perspective, she has been severly depressed for a long time. She is so broken, that instead of dealing with her trauma (losing Beacon, her sister, Penny, Pyrrha) she just through herself into another world saving mission.
Ruby has been stuffing the trauma down since we met her. The first time I think we see her cry (besides initially for a few seconds after Penny and Pyrrha) is the end of Vol 4, where she basically writes a letter to Yang (who never got it) how alone she feels. Then after that, it was tears of joy at the end of Five, and then not till Season 7, when Salem blitz her with the "Your Mother" line.
TL:DR Ruby needs a serious therapist

Cinder's life direction is very general. She told Pyrrha that she believes in destiny, but they did not have the same definition of the term: Cinder sees destiny as "her being a winner" -- being more powerful than anyone around her and getting whatever she wants at the time.
Although maybe even that is not quite right, it's almost like she just values ROBBING others of what they have as a sign of her dominance, aligning with destroying whoever she perceives as the rich, the powerful, the "have everything" crowd just like her early-life abusers. "You Atlas elites are all the same! You think hoarding power means you'll have it forever, but it just makes the rest of us hungrier. And I refuse to starve." She's telling Winter Schnee that -- Winter who left the Schnee dynasty years before and won't get a dime of money. She doesn't see individuals, she just targets people she thinks represent the "social elite" and strips them of money and power. More than that, even -- she'll murder them.
Although she never actively considers the "person I want to be" -- I wonder sometimes if in her deepest dreams at night she remembers Rhodes -- not romantically at all, just that he was the only person who treated her with kindness and saw intrinsic value in her before she killed him. Like, imagine if Cinder was more like Robyn Hill -- someone who saw injustice in society but instead of trying to burn everything to the ground to feel important and get revenge, just fought for what was right, to restore balance to a broken system.

Nora and Ren would have a tough time with What are you question right now. Emerald might have an easier time now. I think before her flip she would've found it impossible to answer. She might not get it right away but I feel like she is finding herself more than Nora and Ren at the moment. Oscar would be a mess, but can't blame him since he is merging souls with Oz. That would mess anyone up. I think Penny would actually be fine (pre second death post her turning human) because she finally got what she wanted and answered her question about whether she was truly a living person or just a robot. Would be interesting with Cinder. Would she answer as the person she wants to be? because I don't think she has any clue about the person she is.

I just put it together...Jaune had a good feeling about that one acre. With lots of Pyrrha-mids. 🫠
I'm actually surprised y'all saw Ruby's line about Blake and Yang to be a comic relief moment. For me that was her real breaking point; sort of bitterly saying "must be nice to have a moment for yourselves to actually be happy instead of being everyone else's lifeline."
But as a question for you for the post-finale thoughts: once you understand everything that's going on, how do you think other characters would have fared in the Ever After. Nora, Oscar, Penny, and Emerald stand out as characters who might also have a hard time with "What are you?" but I'm curious what you think!

The important thing to note about this volume is that while Blake, Yang, and Weiss have reached this level of character growth Ruby is hitting rock bottom becase while the three of them pulled themselves out of their rock bottom in volume 4 she ran off down a yellow road with 3 travel companions to meet up with some wizzard named Oz....
Ruby's mental breakdown is a long time comming- this is everything she has been putting off since the fall of Beacon finally comming out. She has pushed it off for far too long and now she can't run from her trauma anymore- she needs to unpack it.... or else.
Next episode is by far my favorite in the entire series and I love it so much! Can't wait to see you react to it!

Ask the Paper Pleasers to build one out of paper mache smh. Put the animal crossing villagers to work :P
They already have a whole dining hall just for him cause I doubt they eat those quiches. (Little definitely did though)

I guess the difference is that Jaune is expressing his emotions and sadness at the loss while Ruby is bottling it up. 😢

Jaune saying "what about you!? It's always about you!" Hurts because in Volume 4 he was talking about everything she loss and gave everyone the courage to follow her. I think hearing that from Jaune specifically was her last support broken

Something endlessly funny about Jaune having a minor allusion in the White Rabbit (he had the rabbit on his hoodie way back in V1, and on his PJs) is that Miles, his VA, is the current voice of the Duracell Bunny. One that never has issues being late

The straw that broke the camel's back, Ruby finally snapped. It gets worse before it gets better.
Jaune's story through this is so heartbreaking, he had to take Penny's life & live with that pain alone. His only hope, he'd see his friends join him again. The white rabbit comparison is very accurate, minor spoiler but we finally get a Jaune song this volume.
More pain is coming, just a warning. There's a light at the end though.
I hope you guys react to the other RWBY content as well. Ice Queendom is awesome & the DC movies are pretty cool too.

One thing i never noticed until multiple watch throughs is when Ruby said...
"Are we supposed to be mourning Jaune's make believe 'friends'"?
In the context of things, yeah they died, but in the grand scheme of things, she is hurt by the fact that no one is mourning Penny, a real living and breathing Friend.
She is appalled by the fact that they are comforting Jaune for the loss of fairy tale creatures, but not her and their actual Friend who fought and sacrificed herself for the greater good.

I remember when this episode aired and the only thing I was thinking at the time was, "Wow that is some amazing voice acting!" Both Miles and Lindsay really hit it out of the park with their emotions. But uh...mentally prepare yourself for the next episode. It's very triggering....like REALLY REALLY triggerring. I know that Rooster Teeth also provided a warning in the beginning of the ep but some people missed it so I thought I'd bring it up just in case.

Yang had asked several time if Ruby was okay but Ruby would either deflect or flat out ignore them so she hasn't been the most forthcoming with her feelings. And weirdly enough, circumstances always seem to occur right after Yang or someone would ask about Ruby. Like nothing gave them time to focus on anyone in particular.

True, plus Blake's PTSD fromk Adam and his own yelling during her tenure with the White Fang. Sh's not completely over that. Then ther's Weiss' own experiencing with yelling from her own father. So Both Weiss and Blake had experiences with verbally abusive people. That's triggering.

I'm going to give my thoughts as if I'm watching it for the first time too.
Ruby left with Little. Surely Little can help cheer her up some, right?? Help her to put things in perspective, right?? Only three episodes left how on Earth are they going to wrap this up?? There's so many questions I still have..

One of my funniest takeaways from this episode is that Jaune:
Spent ages in this village, expecting team RWBY to take over from him eventually, and
didn't prepare a single bed for them. I think a shack with the bunkbeds woulda been cute, though maybe sorta clashing in the theme the episode wanted
I LOVE that while the Pleasers will keep trying, they refuse to catch Jaune off guard, they could make the tower fall sooner one day but they don't. It's in their nature to be fair.
Jaune and Ruby saying mean stuff but Jaune, the one who's been there 10-20 years internalizing the Penny stuff, being the one of them to "apologise" (not to Ruby but he admits that it wasn't right to say etc) is amusing, and interesting. Like not a critique I genuinely find it interesting.
On rewatch I do think Blake should have let the moment be for a second before bringing out a big smile, but tbf to her she's trying to do what Ruby has always done. (which is why Ruby feels so offended by it, I'd wager)

This episode for me always felt like the incline of a roller coaster hill, you can just feel from the tension among the characters and the pattern of previous volumes that a drop is coming. It puts a pit in my stomach by I honestly love that because it means the story has made me that invested. This show is just amazing.
Yang's semblance has evolved to the point that she doesn't need to tap into her buff completely like she did in the beginning of the series. In Volumes 4 when she was training with her dad, he mentioned that with the way she was using it it would cause her to use all of her stored up strength in a giant burst in order to win a fight but then her aura would be depleted and she would be essentially running on fumes so if she didn't win she would be in trouble. Now she can make that ability last longer and she doesn't even need to be in a rage to access it (as seen by how her eyes aren't always red when she taps into it and are sometimes an orange-ish color instead). She is much more tactical with her semblance which really speaks to her growth as a character.
Also: I love Bucky so much lol! His orneriness reminds me SO much of my late Aussie, Rose. She would grumble at EVERYTHING. Bucky is such a cute, spicy bean and I would literally watch videos of just him and Foxy. Thank you for the adorable guest appearances of your doggos, they make my day brighter. <3

Nice "white rabbit / I'l late!" AiW reference there... Jaune's "Catastrophe List" is a real laugh, if you ever want to pause it and read it in detail! :D Also, just both endearing but sad that he named all the Paper Pleasers after his absent friends because he has missed them for years.
I like that it's Blake who says: "We won't run this time." She's grown so much.
Ruby often looks disengaged and resentful in the background of this episode, while the others are sympathetically listening to the Paper Pleasers. Only Little is really picking up how sad and detached Ruby is; the others don't notice until her blowout that something is desperately wrong.
The blowout is pretty bad but also painfully honest -- anger and loss and resentment Jaune and Ruby have been dealing with alone, finally being dumped into the open. It shows how much Blake, Yang, and Weiss love their friends that they can listen to this anger (some directed at them) with sympathy, without getting defensive. Like how Weiss says Jaune's name -- she's not reproaching him, she's just calling him back to himself, out of compassion.
Like Ken says, it is easy to forget they are still teens -- teens who are facing the world's ultimate evil and feeling responsible for saving/destroying kingdoms. This is a reminder that they are still young and human, with a lot dumped on their shoulders when the adults in the room have failed. And Bethany notes how good it is that Ruby is finally articulating how she's feeling. The Blacksmith asked her in e5, with deep sympathy: "So you're doing this alone?" It's too much for anyone to carry this load alone. Ruby was trying to live up to some impossible standard by pretending to be okay. At least her friends can try to help now.
Probably "It's okay to not be okay" is a big theme of this season -- not as an excuse for stagnancy but simply as an honest milestone of where we are -- because it frees us to grow while not feeling shame over our weakness.

Jaune saying "I'm late, I'm late" is reference for White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland

This was honestly long due. We've seen Ruby start to crack for several Volumes, and I'm surprised it took this long for her to reach her limit. Of course, Jaune's reaction is also perfectly justified, after losing so many people and then spending a lifetime in that strange land. They were both given the responsibility of being team leaders quite early, and that put a heavy burden on them, especially during a war that nobody took the time to prepare them for.

And Ruby reaches the breaking point she's been heading for ever since the fall of Beacon.
It's really sad because just last volume Blake said she looked up to Ruby, and Blake in this volume was just following the example Ruby set and she got yelled at for it. You can also tell how Weiss and Blake's upbringings/experiences affected their reaction when Ruby was ranting, they both shrink in on themselves compared to Yang standing taller against it.
The moment Jaune turned his anger on Ruby felt like a bit of callback to the moment they had in V4 in Ren's village, back then Jaune talked up up and affirmed he doesn't blame her for the situation they're in. This time, he vicously shouts her down and puts the blame on her for them all being stuck in the Ever After.
Things do not calm down next week unfortunately.

Can't blame Jaune in this one, they should've used the energy to "help Jaune" on Ruby instead, I am surprised they didn't notice anything so far. That just shows how everyone expected Ruby to be the cheerful leader that always gets back up.
But the internal traumatizing that Ruby went through, I can only imagine that Jaune had to live and deal with that alone for *Years*, so I'd say, cut that man some slack (In terms of: "He doesn't have it together" and "he should let the village go"). Years of isolation from everything you knew does stuff to you.
(Not to mention, he named the paper pleasers after "everyone", so for him, that could very well mean, that he lost everyone all over again)
(Not blaming Ruby either, if someone should feel bad I think its the rest, for not looking after their supposed leader as much as they maybe should've)

Been waiting for this one, the breaking of the Rose...
Let's be generous... in the last 4 to 8 days for Ruby:
she witnessed the aftermath of a mass murder
she found out that her mother is either dead or being tortured,
they were all wanted by and fought the Atlas military,
she had her leadership questioned by her sister and half her friends,
she saw the aftermath of Nora overdoing it,
thought most of her fiends and sister were dead after the whale explosion
was stalked by and fought the hound after finding penny crashed into the ground like a crater,
Figured out that silver eyed fighters were being abducted and experimented on,
was asked to kill her best friend by said best friend,
watched a duplicate of her best friend die,
Knowingly destroyed 2 cities (for nothing
)watched her sister die as far as she knew,
fought off someone way more skilled than herself but lost her weapon,
thought she herself was dead for a while,
learned her best friend did indeed die, killed by her first friend
Watched the memory of her friend be disrespected,
Was drugged into seeing her younger self and essentially told she was a failure 3 times over,
Found Jaune and saw what time and lack of sanity has done to him,
and this was all while having to come up with plans on the fly to save two cities worth of people,
while being told that all their deaths would essentially be on her hands.
Most of it without ANY kind of break
Poor thing needs a plate of cookies, a glass of milk, and a few hours with a couch and a therapist. Or advice from Qrow on what alcohol tastes the best.
