2023-08-19 19:25:33 +0000 UTCI think that's close about how it activated, but I think it was less a case of Ren making that decision and more of it being a byproduct of its initial activation. We are told in the series that one way that semblances can be discovered is moments of extreme stress - I've always seen it as the extreme trauma of the attack and losing his whole family triggering the activation as an extension of the fight-or-flight response.

2023-08-19 18:46:56 +0000 UTCyou are correct about Ren his semblance is called Tranquility. it allows him to mask his emotions and those around him. making them more or less undetectable to the Grimm. I believe in that moment fear was preventing Ren from following his father words to take action, so he decided to not be afraid. and that is what activated his semblance.
