The wanderer who eventually turns in to Diablo and is the man Marius (the guy telling us the story through the first 4 acts) follows, is the Warrior from Diablo 1. The Warrior is one of the playable classes in the first game, and takes Diablo's soulstone in to his forehead in order to contain the Prime Evil but he could not contain him for long and eventually Diablo took control of him. So all through Diablo 2, the character you play is hunting and trying to stop the evil that is corrupting the world and trying to stop the character you played as in Diablo 1 essentially. Also, it's worth knowing the soulstones, the yellow stone Baal (Lord of Destruction and one of the Prime Evils) were stones that housed the essence of the Prime Evils and were shards of the World Stone (the stone you see Tyrael destroying in the last cinematic). They were created by the Archangel of Justice Tyrael (the angel in the cinematic) who sought to use them to contain the Prime Evils Mephisto, Baal, and Diablo in 3 soul stones so they could no longer plague humanity. Turns out that was a bad idea and the Prime Evils were able to corrupt those stones and were going to use them as a way to attack the Mortal Realm. So your eventual goal in Diablo 2 is to destroy the soulstones of the Prime Evils which should rid the world of those Powerful and evil entities... or so you think.

2023-08-21 03:45:12 +0000 UTCThat was the Worldstone, otherwise known as the "Eye of Anu," "Heart of Creation," and "Heart of the World" a colossal, mountain-sized object of Possessing infinite powers to shape entire realities or unmake worlds with but a thought. Sought by both angels and demons, it was used to create Sanctuary before being destroyed by Tyrael. He had to destroy because Baal was able to infuse his soulstone shard with the Worldstone that had spawned it. His shard pulsated with energies of destruction, and, when fused with the Worldstone, humanity would fall prey to the powers of destruction as well. So Tyrael have to destroy it to saved humanity.
