The kung Lao line used to trip me up when I watched this at a kid. But in context, and also according to the lore, Liu Kang is a descendent of "The Great Kung Lao", a different Kung Lao from the hat brandishing one

Sure alot of it is cheesy but man for its time it is incredible. The fight scenes costumes and soundtrack the best parts. Some of the dialouge was eh but others were great lol.
