Bethany and Ken

That is a very well written and spoiler-free summary.

Its a bitter irony as well. qrow wants to be with his family but can't. while raven wants to be alone and not be tied to anyone. and yet their semblance are the opposite of what they want.

Watching Yang kick ass will ALWAYS be some of my favorite moments in RWBY!! It was so satisfying seeing her beat up all the other bandits. Plus an interesting detail about the fight is that when Yang normally fights, she uses the shotgun blast from her gauntlets while punching. But this time she she didn't fire her gauntlets at all while punching. She only used them to boost her momentum while moving, she kicked everyone's butt with just her bare fists and feet! I'm so glad we got to see more of Yang since we got so little time with her last volume.

The last scene cemented Weiss in myy Top 3. She's such a cinnamon roll, now she's dealth with her demons. <3

The thing with the Xiao Long / Branwen / Rose family dynamic is definitely interesting. What we do know is this: Raven and Qrow are brother and sister, but they're also fraternal twins (last volume during the scene with Tai, Yang, and the professors, Professor Oobleck said something to the effect of "the Branwen twins have always been very interesting"). They were raised as bandit children (Raven mentioned last volume "the tribe raised us") but at some point left the tribe and went to attend Beacon Academy. There they were put on a Huntsman team with Taiyang Xiao Long and Summer Rose, and formed team STRQ (Stark). Presumably, this is also when they first met Ozpin. Based on the apparent naming conventions of the teams, it can be assumed that Summer Rose was the team leader for team STRQ. Yang told Blake in Volume 2 that when she would ask people about her mom, she was told "they were on a team together with Summer and Qrow". We also know that at some point Raven and Taiyang hooked up (it's not clear whether they actually got married or not, since neither of them wears a wedding ring), but they were lovers at the very least and Raven gave birth to Yang. Yang also told Blake in volume 2 that "she left me with my dad just after I was born". So for some reason, Raven abandoned her family and her team and went back to her bandit tribe, even though she was a licensed Huntress. In one of the world of Remnant videos, it was also mentioned that some Huntsmen teams continue working together after graduation, and others choose not to. I think we can assume that team STRQ also continued working together after they graduated, at least until Raven abandoned Tai and her daughter. Then - at some point within the next year - Taiyang hooked up with Summer Rose and they had Ruby. It was stated in the first volume that Yang and Ruby are 2 years apart, and it's also confirmed by CRWBY that Ruby's birthday is on October 31st, and Yang's birthday is July 28th. Unless Ruby was a premature birth (which we have no evidence of) Summer would have needed to have 9 months of her pregnancy before Ruby was born, so Taiyang rebounded over to her very quickly after Raven left. Until Summer Rose's final mission, Yang had no idea that Summer WASN'T her mother, so it is clear that Summer took over the job of raising Yang so that Yang would have a mother - maybe that's why Taiyang gravitated to her so quickly. And then one day Summer Rose went on a mission and never came back, leaving Ruby and Yang to be raised by their father, with help from Qrow. What we don't know is what causes Raven to bond to people - is it people that she cares deeply for? Is it a voluntary choice she has to make? Or is it something that she has no control of, and she has a bond with them by virtue of the fact they're related to her (i.e. Qrow and Yang). I tend to believe it is the first option because of Taiyang, but that doesn't exclude the second option from also being true as well.

Raven's portals brings up such an interesting dichotomy between her and her brother Qrow. Qrow's semblance means that the more he loves someone, the more he has to stay away from them to avoid them getting hurt by his bad luck. That he wants to spend more time with Ruby and Yang, but feels that he can't, for their own safety. Meanwhile, Raven's semblance means if she loves someone, she can be at their side in an instant. That no distance or time constraint, no hell or high water could possibly keep her away if she wanted to be there, and yet she chooses to stay away. This is likely also something the characters are keenly aware of, and fleshes out some of Qrow's underlying bitterness towards his sister.
