Gohan initially calls Buu a Japanese word that roughly translates to "half-wit" or "fool" however the subtitles say: "You retard." So uh, yeah, big no no for English, and honestly I don't believe it's even the most accurate translation from the original manga. Nevertheless, it's why everyone else is so shocked and caught off guard about Gohan just simply saying that to someone.
