As weird as Makima's death sound, it seems that it is based on a personal experience of it's author. Fujimoto stated that when he was unable to bury his pet fish when it died, he felt so sad seeing the ants carrying it away that he cleaned the ants and swallowed it so his pet would stay with him forever. The author is both nuts and a genius.
