As a horror buff, I'm loving this arc. For context though, both the boy and the graduate are Onryo (vengeful spirits). The most famous of which in modern Japanese horror are Sadako from The Ring, and Kayako from Ju-on. The grim, twisted backstories serve to hit home why they became vengeful curses, and I love how this is delivering it in spades.
