RWBY Volume 5 Chapter 14

RWBY Volume 5 Finale!

Comments

I had smiled a bit when you mentioned Raven's self-interest at the end of the Episode 13 reaction, knowing what was coming in the finale -- because Yang gets what she wants by appealing to her mother's worst instinct of self-interest, knowing that she isn't likely to rise past it. At the end, it might be the first time we actually see Raven show remorse, yet she still can't/won't rise to the occasion -- and Yang is "sorry too" for needing to play that card... plus of course how everything has shaken out between the two of them.

So sorry you went through that, but glad you came out the other side. It's not easy to do. Our pride and our anger tells us to fight back. to yell at them. to do something. It's so hard to just ignore. Very impressed you were able to rise above all that 🤗

what you said about bullies was well said, I was badly bullied in middle school (7th-8th) by a boy in my gym class. He liked to pick on me about my appearance, which was something I was already really insecure about like most people my age, but even more so because I have a skin condition. This went on for a year, I got so used to it that began to just ignore everything he said and did to me; he called me names? Ignore. He'd snap my bra strap in line? Ignore. He'd pull my hair? Ignore. And eventually, he got bored and left me alone. So yeah! What you said really meant a lot to me!

I'm so excited for V6.... and V7 tbh.

Volume 5 has some pretty good songs (especially All Things Must Die), but I can't wait for the volume 6 soundtrack, there's a lot of really good shit on there. There are two songs related to Adam, kind of a manifesto and response, that I love.

We didn't think 5 was that bad. But it is different binge watching these then having to wait a year between them.

The weakest of the seasons is past us... onto season 6!!

Loved it!

agree. Whitley is still a child. He doesn't know what he wants or what he has. And Adam..... I think he doesn't even deserve to see his video xD. It's garbage and that's it.

I think it’s less Raven wanting to “bang it out” and him being the only one to escape from. Her semblance was stated to require a bond and three of the know bonded people we know are Yang, Taiyang, and Qrow. Two of them are with it near her so that makes good old dad her only escape route we know of.

Can't wait for you to finally get into Volume 6 - Volume 5 is often considered the low point of the series and Volume 6 is one of the more hyped parts. It fills out a lot of the lore, introduces some truly terrifying new types of Grimm, brings in one of the best new characters in a long time, and finally gets everyone out of the house!

You're about to get into my favorite volume with Volume 6. So MUCH great stuff coming! As far as a few of the questions you seemed to have - we will find out more about the woman whose statue was the base for the elevator down to the Maiden chamber. We're also going to continue to find out more about the Maiden powers as the series continues. I think Yang started out confident, but it was bordering on arrogance - if she hadn't had the fall she'd had at the Battle of Beacon and been forced to face why she wanted to be a Huntress, it really could have developed into full arrogance. Weiss, on the other hand, was putting on a front of arrogance, but it was a mask to hide the very emotionally (and occasionally physically) abusive home that she came from. But as Weiss started to make friends with her team and got away from her father's influence, she felt safe and dropped the mask, and now she's showing her true self. Blake on the other hand had very little self-confidence, but she tried to pretend she did - and a lot of that was due both to being a Faunus and to Adam's manipulations. So Blake needed to really learn to stand up for herself and not blame herself any time something went wrong around her or the people she cares about. Ruby is the only one who hasn't changed much since the beginning of the series - so far her biggest issue has been learning to be a leader, but even after Vol 3 she didn't change a lot - she's starting to feel the "badge and the burden" that Ozpin mentioned to her on the first day of school. Emerald is a very interesting character though - her Semblance is kind of OP and broken in a lot of ways. A) She can make a completely convincing illusion, even though it takes all her concentration to do - but it makes her a dangerous fighter because she can both distract her opponent or support an ally - we saw that she's an especially dangerous combo when she's paired with someone like Mercury, who's also dangerous and skilled - and with Emerald distracting his opponent, he gets free shots in on them. B) She can cloak herself by messing with people's perception, which gives her a form of invisibility, since her illusions also seem to extend to sound - they're not just visual illusions. C) The best way / only way to stop her is to face her in a group, since she can only fool one person at a time. D) However, we're also seeing signs here of just how powerful and broken Emerald's ability is - in Volume 3, when she set Yang up, she complained that she had a headache just trying to fool the two paramedics who had the closest look at Mercury's leg. She specifically said, "One mind I can handle, two is a stretch". However, in this episode, in a moment of stress, she conjured an illusion of Salem that convincingly affected many more people - by count - Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang, Jaune, Nora, Ren, Qrow, and Oscar / Ozpin. Even though it knocked her out from the strain - that's an impressive power surge - from 2 people to 9, possibly 10 people, if you count Oscar and Ozpin separately. The Volume 5 soundtrack isn't as long as some of the previous ones, but there is a Volume 6 character short for Adam that you could combo with the soundtrack. Also, no more World of Remnants, but they did release a short parallel series called RWBY Fairy Tales, which is based on a book called Fairy Tales of Remnant that came out 2020. You could probably watch the first 3 episodes of that at this point without spoilers, although I would save episodes 4,5, and 6 until at least after Volume 6 is over, since there are some mild spoilers in those episodes. They're all pretty short episodes - around 6-7 minutes each. Looking forward to more and can't wait to see your reactions to Volume 6!

Emerald: MY MOMMY IS GONNA COME BEAT ALL OF YOU UP

Lucifer_Crowe

I know Whitley is a brat but he is still just a kid and grew up in the same abusive environment as Weiss and Winter did. He’s just dealing with it in his own way. Don’t give up on him just yet. Also there is a Character short for Adam before Volume 6 starts, but he doesn’t deserve his own video, I’d just include it in the video for the first episode of the volume. 😂

SavvySpark

It's a solid finale. Tying up a lot of loose ends and character arcs. You both nailed it with how Yang needed to go through her trauma to make that scene with Raven really hit hard. One of the themes with Yang from the very beginning has been "asymmetry". From her name, being only one half of yin-yang, to the opening quote of the Yellow trailer referring to the beauty of "misshapen" sparks over symmetrical ones. From her fighting style, to her pep talk to Blake in Volume 2, to losing her arm, to her dad talking about how she is "off-balance", to even her theme songs that usually included short riffs of discordant notes. Her arc from season one has all been about discovering where she needed balance, and then finding it. And that scene of Yang confronting her mom put it all on display.
