I'm a little late to this but that line is just amazing "Look at me being all human." It's just so good that someone who's purpose was to be a killing machine learned to become something much more. And that the the one to risk it all was none other than an android.

Dragon ball super will no longer be available on Hulu in 11 days today so you better finish the series before then.

Yeah that is a pretty major change. The proper translation does make him come off better. Not sure I'd agree with him but it doesn't make him comes across as someone that just wants to control every aspect of the universe

I believe you are mixing up sympathy and empathy. Empathy is understanding someone's point of view and why they may be feeling a certain way or acting a certain way. Sympathy is basically feeling sorry for someone. You don't have to agree with someone to empathize with them or feel what they are feeling. That's at least how we have always used it. So we did say we thought the point of the origin story was for us to empathize with Jiren and understand where he is coming from. Which is the same as seeing why he is like this and chasing power. We get why he is like this, but that doesn't mean we have to like it or agree with his stance. 🤗

I hate the english translation that Jiren says "I want the power to bend all to my will, even bend time itself". This translation is completely false and made him come off as a bad guy when he is literally a hero of his universe.
The proper translation is "strength is justice, strength is absolute, strength forgives all, even the past". From this point of view he comes off far better as he believes that ultimate strength has the power to protect the innocent in his universe and also having ultimate strength means he wont have to experience his past trauma ever again. Jiren is definitely ego driven believing he is the best and loves to make that clear but he definitely isnt a bad person as the english dub made him out to be

I think you didn't quite catch the point of jiren behaving this way.
Through the Backstory they're trying to tell us that the Current Day Jiren's personality of being stone cold, no emotions, no friends, never trust anybody, just always power hungry is more of a coping mechanism for him to deal with all his past trauma.
He's just Brainwashed himself into believing the philosophy of Might Makes Right, Always Dominate, Never be overthrown ever again, strength is everything as a way to cope with everything he's seen as a child and the kind of environment he grew up in
That's what 17 was trying to exploit by trying to trigger him and do psychological warfare on him.
The point of his backstory was not to make the Audience feel empathize with him. It was to show us why the current day Jiren is like this and always chasing more and more Power
Infact even the Clown God began narrating his story like "Let me tell you all the True Reason for Jiren's Obsession with Strength"

This episode really gave us a sense of hopelessness. 17 is gone, frieza is out of the fight, and goku and vegeta are exhausted, while Jiren hasn't even really exerted himself yet.

JT brought up some great points in the comments of how the dbs Manga portrays Jiren and his motivation being different also the english translation for that line Jiren says "I want the power to bend all my will, even bend time itself" isn't accurate
Also Frieza probably has had the worst 3,4 minutes in the last couple of episodes as first Toppo destroyed him and then Jiren punching out of his Golden form like a ping pong ball which was kinda funny

Yeah Jiren's backstory and motivation was...underwhelming. Like when you look at amazing backstories like Sasuke from Naruto, even though his motivations became extremely toxic, you KNEW why he did it because of his tragic past, you can see how fluid and connected his backstory and motivation was. Jiren's on the other hand doesn't connect, it's like both his backstory and motivations go against each other and it just makes it hard for the audience to connect with his character. But still though his strength is nothing to scoff at and why he's an impressive character at the end of the day

I wouldn't exactly say Jiren has abandoned his ideals, as when the slaughter happened, he was a child. When he lost his master, I would say he's like 17, a teenager. Once he began to trust no one and focus on strength, that's when he realizes his ideal. He never went big into the whole Pride Troopers, as when they are introduced, he wasn't there. We only saw Toppo, Dyspo and Khaseral. I personally liked Jiren as this man who's lost everything, gained this immense strength on his own and has surpassed a G.o.D. Is Jiren a dick, absolutely. Ego driven, yes and no. Yes as he does come off that way with the way he talks down on people, but it's just facts he's spitting. He is the strongest and he's proven it again and again. It only took Goku to reach a new level that made him at least equal to Jiren. Also R.I.P. to my boy 17, this episode and his one line "look at me being all "human"", shot him up to be my favorite Super character in the anime.

I always loved 17 as a kid just because of how he acted and his design, but this arc and especially this episode definitely cemented him as top 5! Truly the MVP for his selflessness 🙏
Also small flex but the voice actor of 17 (Chuck Huber) follows me on Twitter 🐐

18:33 Alright, so hearing this line got me thinking, since I didn't remember Jiren saying anything to the effect that he does here. So I just went back to look at the sub to see what the dialogue was. Here it is: "Strength is absolute. Strength forgives all. Even the past."
Not gonna tell you how this should make you perceive Jiren’s character, but that's quite the dialogue change. Not nearly as malicious as "I want the power to have everything bend to my will. Even bend time itself" if you ask me.

I don't necessarily think that Jirens backstory being explained is meant to have viewers feel sorry for him, it was more to explain why Jiren values strength over meaningful connections (or engaging in them). 17 has done very well in TOP considering he's going against godlike beings.

I can't go into everything until future episodes but I will say that if they wanted to make Jiren a more relatable and nuanced character, I would've had them focus more on "saving Jiren's soul" and letting that be the main focus and point of the tournament, instead of merely presenting him as just some blank wall to overcome. I'll be the one to say it; the alternative ending in Sparking Zero is arguably better, and part of me almost wishes they went that route, even if the climax we do actually get is still pretty damn spectacular.

Now that you’re aware of Jiren’s story, I get to mention some big details that Toyotaro added to it in the manga:
- The manga’s version of Jiren comments that 17’s sacrifice “does not please him”, and that he wanted to end the tournament so he wouldn’t have to witness any more meaningless fighting (in his eyes). While this does make him a bit more likable, I’d like to note that Jiren contradicts this as he smiles just a few panels later as Goku and Vegeta start squaring up with him.
- The anime is a tad vague on what Jiren’s wish is, but the manga elaborates on it a lot more. Jiren wants to resurrect his master Gicchin (pronounced “Gii-chin”, play on “kitchen”), as an unnamed demon slew him. Toppo explains that Jiren wants Gicchin back because he had never accepted Jiren as his true successor and wants to get his approval. He further explains that is why Jiren has grown so tremendously strong, and why he values strength so much (instead of as a means of coping with betrayal like in the anime).
- Belmod claims that Gicchin had Jiren join the Pride Troopers bc he had always been a solitary fighter and wanted him to experience the value of being part of a team and letting others help you. Belmod cites Jiren’s ongoing seclusion as the reason Gicchin never fully recognized Jiren.
- Marcarita (U11’s angel) reveals that Gicchin was killed by a demon, and is thus unable to be revived by any means other than the Super Dragon Balls (a detail that becomes incredibly relevant by the end of Super). This rule of permadeath when killed by demonic beings hadn’t come up since OGDB, and to this day we still have no idea who this “demon” was.
- A bonus sketch by Toyotaro revealed that Belmod actually used to be a Pride Trooper when he was younger. Since Belmod states that he used to be friends with Gicchin “a long time ago”, this is likely how they met.
Now remember, there’s a slim chance that none of this lore is related to the anime’s story since it follows a different continuity than the manga. Guess we’ll find out should the anime continue. Still baffles me just how much Toyotaro tacked on though.

17’s sacrifice cemented him as MVP for U7 for many. I could try to recap all the ways he’s helped out in the tournament, but that’s way too much even for a nutcase like me. How ironic that the wish Krillin made to remove the bombs from 17 and 18 only ended in 17 dying by blowing himself up anyway. A damn shame.

So we’ve made it here. This episode got people… well, “talking” when it premiered. As some comments from the YT side of the community have been alluding to, Jiren's backstory turned him into a character who is arguably the most polarizing antagonist of Dragon Ball. From what I’ve observed over the last 7 years, the simplicity of his character is what makes or breaks him for fans. Some will tell you that his origin story is as cliché as tragic backstories go, that it was not worth posturing as this big revelation that needed to be saved till the near end, and that Jiren’s only good for his spectacle as he has little depth. It doesn’t help that his design and fighting style aren’t the most “unique” either. On the other hand, others will tell you that they enjoy the idea of Jiren's character. The concept of having a man with grounded motivations be the one who has managed to reach power greater than his God of Destruction without any extraordinary techniques or transformations is what some fans appreciate about Jiren.
