This episode was amazing and I loved it because there was a lot of videos that came out at the time of giant gatherings in Mexico reacting to episode 130 and 131 and those are some of the best reactions out there cause it's just massive amounts of people just screaming at the top of their lungs! It's awesome! These last 2 episodes felt like events almost it was such a great time!

2025-01-29 18:42:20 +0000 UTCGlad we are not alone in that. JT posted an interesting theory on why Jiren was a good antagonist for Goku and what he represents, but still not our favorite antagonist 🤗

2025-01-29 18:41:09 +0000 UTCNever. That's why we make fun of him always haha 😜

2025-01-29 18:37:30 +0000 UTCThat's a cool way to look at the dynamic and not saying that's wrong. Still doesn't make Jiren our favorite antagonist though 🤗

2025-01-29 15:13:38 +0000 UTCAt 17:11 Goku uses small energy balls under his feet to skate on Jiren's energy beams as there were no other rock platforms for Goku to jump on to reach Jiren which is really cool and clever.

2025-01-29 14:54:07 +0000 UTC"I ain't no hero of justice or anything, but anyone who hurts my friends is gonna pay" This is what makes goku a genuinely good man, he doesn't complicate justice or his morals, it's plain and simple with him

2025-01-29 01:38:18 +0000 UTCFunny enough this episode is what made me respect Jiren a bit. For sure he is 100% a dick, but he stands by his convictions through thick and thin, unlike Top. And on top of that you can hear the pain in his voice as he is going full power, the VA did so well in conveying that pain and it shows what he's fighting for: might alone. Seriously though, what an amazing fight, the animations, the red vs blue color schemes, just everything about this fight is why it's on my top 3 best fights in the franchise. And when I first watched this episode I did not expect 17 to be alive cause I had a friend spoil me and said he was gonna die smh. Glad that turned out not to be the real thing lol. One more episode, can't wait for the next one!!!

2025-01-28 23:01:38 +0000 UTCYou guys aren't alone btw the first time me and my brothers watched this we screamed at the tv "damn you frieza!!" 😂 & Ken you're not alone most dragon ball fans consider Jiren a really cool character with a mediocre back story. Me personally, i consider Jiren extremely boring besides his powers. I find Toppo way more interesting & speaking for me personally, the show never gave me reason to be empathetic to jiren lol

2025-01-28 21:43:43 +0000 UTCYeah. I guess their primary concern would be that having such events go unregulated would just encourage more of it to happen with future DB content (like Broly would later on). Thus, they would end up losing a lot of potential revenue as people could watch stuff w/o having to subscribe to streaming services or buy movie tickets. Not trying to justify Toei's shit cuz they're a massive company that isn't concerned about me and doesn't need to me to defend them. Just saying there's more to the rationale besides just the publicity or copyright control.
JT
2025-01-28 21:42:32 +0000 UTCImagine being that asshole trying to stop people watching an anime that they love. I know Toei are notorious for making copyright claims left, right and center but surely they would see this as great publicity for DB and ignored this drama? lol

2025-01-28 21:11:45 +0000 UTCSuper interesting, never thought about that. And great call back to BoG about Goku saying he wasn’t happy on achieving ssj God on his own.

2025-01-28 20:45:51 +0000 UTC24:56 Well, I don't know if I entirely agree with that. Not trying to excuse what Jiren did with the audience or say that it was an entirely "honorable" way to win, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that it was no longer a matter of skill/strength. Goku tried fighting in way that was new to him and burned out due to his own limitations. You can't blame someone for winning a marathon if they know how to not burn out first by not going balls to the wall with movement.

2025-01-28 20:36:22 +0000 UTCWe all thought Frieza backstabbed Goku.

2025-01-28 20:27:33 +0000 UTCWe all blamed Freeza in that moment 💀😂

2025-01-28 20:26:59 +0000 UTCAnd it was pretty much self taught as well, he really does deserve the title of strongest mortal in the multiverse.

2025-01-28 20:26:34 +0000 UTCI like how in the manga they specifically call out that 17 COULDN'T have self-destructed, at least in the way they believed he did, since Krillin all the way back in the Cell saga, wishes the bombs out of both him and 18. His plan, I believe, was also something Frieza was entirely in on from the start. I also really like that "I ain't no hero of justice" line from Goku. Not just as a really good character defining moment but it also satisfies the inner OG Funimation dub hater in me since they turned Goku into a poor man's Superman; also, something that Toriyama particularly despised about the anime in general.

2025-01-28 20:26:14 +0000 UTCDANG I had convinced myself to have some restraint and save these two videos for after tomorrow when I’m on a long hike, but the double upload completely torpedoed that plan. Nope, watching them rn!
Hohoho
2025-01-28 20:18:39 +0000 UTCOh shit, 17’s alive! Guess I was mistaken 😉

2025-01-28 20:04:17 +0000 UTCThis episode and the next marked a historic moment for DB. Not only did they break the Internet as the eps 109-110 special did, but they also caused an international incident. Allow me to play historian on this: Let me start by saying that Dragon Ball is MASSIVE in Latin American countries. Arguably bigger than it is in Japan. In the 1980’s, the Mexican govt couldn’t afford to start their own animation industry, and American cartoons were too expensive to import. The Japanese government wanted to spread its cultural influence and relevance through media such as anime, so it allowed Latin American countries to dub/license anime at far lower costs. Unlike the early localization of anime here in the U.S., Latin American media kept things a lot more faithful to the source material in terms of things like censorship and music. Their dub of OGDB also gained traction before their dub of DBZ unlike here in the States where most of the older fans got exposed to DBZ first, many of whom might not have even gone back to watch OGDB. If I’m not mistaken, they also ended up getting a lot more anime localized in general compared to the U.S. Fast forward to the time these episodes premiered in March of 2018. Flyers were being made and sent around by Latin American DB fans to organize watch parties for episodes 130 and 131 in public squares, stadiums, and theaters. These parties ended up seeing the attendance of thousands, hell, TENS of thousands DB fans across all generations. As these events were being held, videos were being posted online of the crowd cheering for U7’s fight against Jiren, and my god are they glorious. Just Google “DBS watch party” and you’ll see what I mean. As a result of this, Mexico’s Embassy of Japan sent out a letter urging Coahuila's governor to put out a cease and desist for these events as they arguably violated Toei’s author rights (to which a deal was made so no serious action was taken). Juarez’s government also had diplomatic discussions with the embassy, which defended the screening of these episodes. I am so envious of the Latin American DB fans. Politicians fighting for my enjoyment of DB? I might actually start giving a shit about politics lmao. I’m not some hype beast who will tell others they can’t like other Shonen anime/manga more than Dragon Ball. However, there is no question that shit like this cements it as that of the most influential and iconic of them.

2025-01-28 20:02:05 +0000 UTCSay what you will about Jiren’s character, but you gotta give him mad credit. This man still puts up a fight even after Goku has reached MUI when G.o.Ds could not. As far as we’re aware, he’s doing this through even more legitimate means than Goku. No transformations, no god ki, no Zenkai boosts, and not even any training from the angels. Just a mortal who’s pure grind.
JT
2025-01-28 20:01:43 +0000 UTCWatching these reactions got me thinking about the philosophy behind Goku and Jiren’s fight, and had me revisiting older discussions from the DB community regarding these last episodes. During my browsing, I came across a take on why Jiren was someone’s favorite antagonist that I found so fascinating that I would like to share it here: Jiren represents a side of Goku that he had spent the entirety of DBS overcoming. He had always wanted to become the strongest by fighting the most powerful opponents and sometimes didn’t care what it took to reach that level as long as it was something he did himself. He expressed his displeasure of having to rely on other people to just stand a chance against Beerus in Battle of Gods. Throughout Super, the power Goku obtains on his own is not always enough to defeat every enemy. He wasn’t able to stop Golden Frieza, Hit, Zamasu, or Jiren on his own. Unlike Jiren, Goku has learned by the time he reaches MUI that it’s not always enough to depend on your own abilities, and that accepting help from others shouldn’t be off limits. Not saying this is the “definitive” way to look at Goku and Jiren’s character foil. Just thought it was interesting.
JT
2025-01-28 20:01:22 +0000 UTCThe manga doesn’t lean into Jiren being as much of a broken man as Toei did here, so he doesn’t try to attack U7’s spectators during the final battle. To this day I’m still split on which version of Jiren I consider superior. The manga doesn’t try to turn him into a more “villainous” character, but he’s also a lot less intimidating than anime Jiren bc he isn’t portrayed to be as much of an unstoppable force (i.e. Hit being able to land several blows on him, Roshi using UI on him, etc).
JT
2025-01-28 20:01:00 +0000 UTCCan’t give enough praise to Jiren’s voice actors in both the dub and sub in this episode. Patrick Seitz and Eiji Hanawa did a phenomenal job of capturing his desperation and anger.

2025-01-28 20:00:42 +0000 UTCI get a hype DBS episode and a hype Nocturne S1 episode at the same time. I’m eating good on here today!
