Dragon Ball Super Broly Movie Full Reaction

Watched this last night. Patreon took forever to process the video. Full Watch Along reaction to Dragon Ball Super Broly Movie

Comments

Just imagine BROLY turn into SUPER SAIYAN BLUE against gogeta lol

TEMA AFO

NEW BROLY MOVIE WISH HE TALK MORE THAN JUST FIGHT , like the OG BROLY is an animal he talk so much and beat the crap out of the Z fighter’ if you guys have time watch the OG DBZ BROLY 1993 I think that’s the year

TEMA AFO

Yeah but Broly was just the weapon and his father and Frieza were more the driving force so it was easier to root for Broly and want him to survive and be free from his father's negative influence 🙂

Bethany and Ken

Yes we did watch the Broly vs Hulk Death Battle 🙂

Bethany and Ken

Our pleasure 🙂

Bethany and Ken

Even though we already posted our reaction before we replied. We do still read comments so we knew to wait.

Bethany and Ken

Thanks for the heads up 🙂

Bethany and Ken

Our pleasure. Thanks for going on this journey with us 🙂

Bethany and Ken

Sounds like watching it in theaters surrounded by other fans was a lot of fun 🤩 miss that kind of experience in theaters. We've had bad luck in theaters so don't go much anymore

Bethany and Ken

That makes sense. Same thing with T.O.P. where everything is happening at same time so you think more time is passing than actually is. Though they did stretch out that last minute for like three episodes haha

Bethany and Ken

Oh nice. glad to hear they are in the story now 🙂

Bethany and Ken

The development just makes him a much more interesting character and villain in our opinion 😈🤩

Bethany and Ken

At end of Super Goku kind of said he can't just turn it on and tap into MUI so we were okay with him not being able to bust that out always. Though not getting Royal Blue Vegeta is disappointing ☹️

Bethany and Ken

😂

Bethany and Ken

Yeah we needed that reminder to hate Frieza. 😁

Bethany and Ken

Absolutely. Z Bardock had a real sense of grittiness and brutality to him that Toriyama's Bardock doesn't quite recapture.

JT

taking away the iconic red headband I think was a miss for sure. Especially since it's red with the blood of his friends right?

Bethany and Ken

Oh nice. Yeah we for sure recognize the name 🙂

Bethany and Ken

haha, nah, we wouldn't want you holding back 😜

Bethany and Ken

At 1:28:12 the move gogeta does is called meteor explosion, Gogeta detonates a nuclear blast inside broly's chest. Gogeta literally beat Broly so much, he brought broly back to his senses. I like how Gogeta's power even impressed whis when he said "how truly magnificent" which is rare considering whis was only impressed by one thing in the whole of Super and that was Goku's ultra instinct. It's quite fascinating how this movie makes you worried for broly wondering if he is going to survive or not by the end which is interesting because broly is the antagonist in this movie so normally you wouldn't be worried about the antagonist rather you would root against the antagonist however here it's the opposite by the end you hope for broly to survive

Zaid

I know right 🥺 when he stepped in when the other voice actress stepped away from frieza(apologies for forgetting her name) it took me a bit to get used to him but then i grew to liking this version of frieza…now i lost him as is and he was a great man from the sounds of it from other cast members, the dbz abridged group of guys talked about him, and learning about him.

BNutt18

I'm sad every time when I think about Frieza's voice actor. Such a long battle against his disease, and yet he was so passionate about his voice work to the very end. RIP.

John Huizer

If you two see this: The positives after this movie: 1. Broly cannon 2. Gogeta cannon sad thing about after this. 1. The dub voice of frieza past away about a year or so after this 2. Brolys dub voice actor was accused of some stuff with fans(not proven but it has ruined his reputation and he will not return to voice broly after this) 3. Dragonball super super hero happens after 2 manga arcs later(you don’t need to know what happens but just know 2 arcs happen between this movie and the next)

BNutt18

Same there is no shot Toei wont with how much money they can make from streaming, merch, licensing, etc. Its only a matter of time really the question being how much? Could take up to a decade depending on how easily they obtain the rights to DB. DB is one of the biggest and most profitable anime's of all time there's no reason why Toei would just let it die.

REDE

That was a great reaction to a very fun movie. I really enjoyed listening to your thoughts on this movie as well. As much as I love this movie, I'm especially excited to your reaction to Super Hero. I'm looking forward to hear your thoughts on it.

John Huizer

Okay.

k c

I think the art style elevates this one above it. Plus, including so many things in one movie like Bardock’s story (including the destruction of Vegeta), Broly’s story, he and Gogeta (both becoming canon), a new planet and characters, kid Raditz and Vegeta, Young Nappa, Gine (the MC’s mom), etc. And it flows so well.

k c

You talking bout Bulma cake? 💀

REDE

KC, No it is undeniably canon to Super's timeline. In Volume 9 of DBS Goku tells Merus about Broly in the Moro arc. There is even a small bonus sketch showing Gogeta about to finish off broly saying "Sorry, but there's no room in this book to show our epic battle. See ya, Broly." (DBS vol 9 pg 100) They also recap the Broly movie in the same volume on page 87.

REDE

I was referring to my circle.

Hohoho

really enjoyed the movie...however, I don't know why, but what gets me laughing most is the scene just before Frieza lands on Earth, he tells Paragus to do whatever he likes to Vegeta, but to leave Goku to him. Then his minion enters and says the dragon balls are collected....Frieza immediately cheers up to excited puppy dog with his tail wagging fast... the fusions of Goku and Vegeta are distinct...when you have Vegito, Vegeta's characteristics are more prominent. even more of Vegeta's voice is heard. with Gogeta, the opposite. Goku is more prominent. If you rewatch either of the fusions....try to pick up the distinctions.

Nate Terry

No, I don’t…. Actually, as I was typing… I realized what you’re talking about.

k c

It’s like an alternate reality fusion it’s canon to some timeline… Perhaps, one that’s similar to Z-GT timeline.

k c

Do we?

k c

Meh

k c

Whaaaat? You saying that crying for a few hours isn't a good start to a character's villain arc? "It's not a particularly valuable planet." "Ouch." I mean, to be fair...Roshi is there. "Go! Goku, Go!" Ha! A mite early on that one. That song comes later. I always love the parallel wishes between Bulma and Frieza. It's funny to think that Vegeta basically married a non-evil version of Frieza. "She's in love." Not yet. "He's gonna break you scanner." "And your heart." HA! "She does look like Veruca Salt." HAAAAAA! That's golden...Frieza. Sorry, Cheelai, Broly says the fur stays ON during... "Stay here and shut up." Love the synchronous head shake you two gave to that. "I like how he actually answers it." The fact that Frieza has also come to accept Goku's stupidity for what it is is truly great character growth. "My garage door opener!" I...shouldn't have laughed as hard as I did. Oops. Correction to my earlier statement. The song is "Go Broly Go," rather than Goku. "Just tell him the sun's getting real low and pet his hand." I...forget. Did y'all watch the Death Battle of Hulk vs Broly? "I like damaged bad boys." Damnit, Ken. I love it so much. Frieza's performance regarding Paragus's death may be his finest moment. "You say nice, but aren't you worried?" "Yeah, but...it's still fun." Ken seems like the type who'd welcome the apocalypse if it looked awesome enough. Valid. And turning Broly on Frieza might be Goku's finest moment. The Gogeta/Broly fight is pure fandom wish fulfillment. About 20 years ago (oh god, actually, it just celebrated 20 year 2 months ago...ow), one of the Dragon Ball games, Budokai 3, had one of the best openings. On top of having one of the greatest tracks of all time (damnit, Yamamoto, why did you have to plagiarize so much), it had a quick seen showing these two clashing, and that quickly become a widely desired battle across the fandom. It's took 14 years for it to happen in canon, but suffice to say, people were satisfied. "Guys better hurry before someone steals your wish." So, uh...OG Dragon Ball is on the docket soon, right? As much as I do love this movie, I'm more excited for your reaction to the next. Super Hero may just be my favorite Dragon Ball movie of all time. I look forward to it.

DementisXYZ

When this movie came out I remember going crazy during Goku's ssj blue transformation when it flashed silver. I thought he was bouta go Ultra instinct and I'm pretty sure everyone else did too.

Jehanzeb Ahmed khan

Appreciate the content guys!

Christopher's&,

Fun fact. From the moment Gogeta goes super saiyan blue Broly does not land a single hit on him.

dreadstream

wishful thinking although there is a free version on Youtube with Pantera and GT's ost it honestly hits harder than the original versions music. Broly powering up and screaming to Pantera is and always will be sick as shit.

REDE

I think Super will return eventually. Maybe that's just me coping, but I truly believe it will be back

Gus

Despite the English dub nowadays having a great track record of being faithful, some infrequent bad translation choices still happen. The “you use the Dragon Balls because you look so old?” was actually “you use the Dragon Balls for vain reasons?” in Japanese. The change by the dub made Goku sound rude when he wasn’t

Hohoho

Z Broly didn’t have more “personality,” he just had more “aura.” I was SO disappointed and bored when I watched the first Z Broly movie. I thought Broly would be this cool sadist, but he just came across as a tryhard goofball. The second and third movies decimate him even more. If Trunks pees on you, your “aura” is gone

Hohoho

At least with Super Hero, it’s CGI. So seeing those characters in the 2D style we love will still feel fresh. It’s not a BoG/RoF situation.

Hohoho

Same with the bunch of floating square flashback thingies. They pop up again Sparking Zero and Daima

Hohoho

The Big Bang Kamehameha looked lame in the GT anime. I think it deserves to re-debut while looking like it does in the games

Hohoho

Important clarifications: The movie version of the story will not bring up any unseen events, nor assume you have read them. Reading the chapters prior to it is merely optional.

Hohoho

Calling Cheelai “Frieza Force Bulma” is cool, but we call her “Space Bulma” in these streets.

Hohoho

You’re super wrong in that first paragraph. You’re implying they’ve seen Toyotaro’s art - they never did. Toyotaro has nothing to do with the Super anime. He only works on the manga, which looks completely different from the anime. In fact, Toriyama himself said Toyotaro is the best replicator of his style. You’re thinking about Yamamuro, not Toyotaro. Also this movie isn’t done in Toriyama’s style, but (mainly) Shintani’s. Again, similar to Toriyama’s, but not the same.

Hohoho

Wonderful movie, easily one of the best DB movies. Battle of Gods, Broly and Super Hero keep swapping 1st place for me depending on the day. The animation in this one is gorgeous, the jokes all hit as intended, and the cast (both new characters and regulars) were great. Love it.

Hohoho

Make sure you wait for the after credit of the next movie

The Ajuwa

Beth, what the heck lol? Paragus literally kidnapped Beets and then killed him when he realized he broke the ship by crashing it. I guess he got the same treatment. Poetic.

k c

I just wanna say I absolutely loved and adored this journey with you both and I’m happy you’ve made it this far so thank you❤️🫶🏼

SlyFlorush

This right here is peak Dragon Ball and you can really tell the difference between Toriyama's illustrations and Toyotarou. Toriyama's is soft and rounded, while Toyotarou is edgier and sharper. I really wish Super was made this way, not 1 to 1 but in Toriyama's style, but oh well. I'm really glad that you, Kenneth got why Goku told Broly to call him Kakarot. It is because he's a Saiyan like Goku. Since Vegeta always calls Goku by his Saiyan name. Just shows how much he's come along on accepting his Saiyan heritage. One nitpick, I get why they retconned the destruction of Planet Vegeta, but other than giving us an origin for Broly, nothing really came from that. That emotional moment between Goku and his parents just twisted the knife of the extinction of the Saiyans. I will say that this is the second time they mention Vegeta having a younger brother. The first time was in Battle of Gods where Bulma asks if Vegeta knew where his brother was, since they were looking for a sixth Saiyan to make Goku a Super Saiyan God. His name is Tarble, Vegeta and Tarble nake up the name of Vegetable. He makes his first appearance in Return of Goku and Friends back in 2008. You can say that Cabba is his universe counterpart since they're almost similar.

Jason Rogue

I enjoyed going along this ride with you both. I am excited for the next movie Super Hero and then moving on to OG Dragonball. Watching it sometimes provide better context to why characters behave the way they do in later series. i.e. Why Goku responds the way he does with Bulma as you mentioned while watching this movie.

Cilla W

That shit is ass anyways they really didn't want Frieza to win and it shows (Bro is a head and a hand at the end of the fight 💀)

REDE

Its probably better to just wait for the anime to get a reinstalment. The manga and anime are the same story but have pretty important differences (ex. No Goku Black Super Saiyan, Infinite Zamasu portrayal, and No Kefla vs Gohan). If and when Super comes back there will likely be discrepancies from the manga. Plus they usually are pretty serious about spoilers. Also watching a rundown of a manga arc doesn't do the sagas any justice. If they genuinely wanted to hear about the Moro/Granolah arcs it would be better for them to just read the paperback copies or read it online through VIZ.

REDE

Nice thinking i forgot about that ngl

REDE

Its also referred to as the Stardust breaker

REDE

Yeah but people already complain about "No stakes" and "Plot armor" bringing back an entire species would make people go nuts. It would be better for them to do a mini arc when Super is back where Goku and Vegeta go to otherworld to visit any of the substancial Saiyans who are dead. Like Bardock, Gine, King Vegeta, Nappa, Radditz, and the first SSG.

REDE

True but yea I meant the original non version one where how broly is than his abridge version, kinda like how they rewatched history of trunks

Jeffrey F

I kind of thought that was an asspull. First off how did Paragus even manage to make that? I know he probably made it from the ships parts but even if that's the case how would that be enough energy to harm Broly? Assuming he only had the ships parts to work with its not like the collar would be able to generate a planet shattering amount of energy. Still probably the best DB movie though imo.

REDE

They technically already did through abridged but they watched Broly the second coming before watching Super. So they have a pretty good idea of what differences there are between the two characters.

REDE

Vegeta turning super saiyan god for the first time was one of the crazy moments ever! The audience was going crazy in the theaters!

Jeffrey F

lol if yall want yall can rewatch the original broly for comparison of which broly is crazier

Jeffrey F

Shock collar was necessary to keep Broly in check, Paragus is too weak to stop him before he's going berserk. Other than that, yeah, Paragus is a shit dad. DBS Super Hero next!

Hiruman

The audience i was in screamed so loud when Goku accepted his name as Kakarot finally and him saying that to Broly specifically was the icing on the cake. They also screamed when Vegeta turned red. Also happy Dragon Ball added another fun female character. Cheelai is so adorable & def has the feels for Broly hehe. Can't blame her🤣

Asuka Yousei 妖精帝國

The opening to this movie really made me wish more than ever for the Saiyans to be resurrected by the dragon balls at some point, I want goku to meet his mother

Hercule Pyro

That Rainbow attack was called the soul punisher, its supposed to vaporize any evil being with lesser power. Broly not dying to it confirmed even more to them that he was a good pure guy at heart

Hayden Morris

If you didn't notice, once gogeta went blue, broly never touched him again for the rest of the movie. He was simply too much to catch up that time...

Hayden Morris

Small detail but in whis’s scene of dodging broly you can see Whis dodge Gogetas instant transmission into him. That’s how fast he is 😭

Angel M

Man RIP Chris. He is truly a legend. I know his character hated it but I hope he’s in other world having the time of his life in a field of flowers and teddy bears 🙏

Angel M

Heads up! when you watch DBS Super Hero...There is an after credit.

GamerViewer89

So there are 2 arcs that occur between this movie and DBS Super Hero in the manga if you guys are interested. The first one is the Moro arc and the second one is the Granolah arc. Then the events of DBS Super Hero. If you guys are interested in seeing a review of them then I recommend either Justin's Den or Carthu's Dojo as both give very good summaries of the arcs. Regardless, your dragon ball reaction content is great as always.

Akka

For copyright reasons, they can't show the video they're reacting to. You need to watch the video via a streaming platform whilst watching their reaction.

Cynergy

Will Gogeta vs Vegito be coming soon?

Phoenix White

Look how much fun you missed, Uncle Beerus the Babysitter. Now you gotta catch up on these on Crunchyroll.

Osio

This was honestly one of, if not, the best DB movie. Awesome fights, great characters, and making Broly cannon. Funny how Gogeta was about to kill Broly but willingly let Frieza go. As for why Frieza Bulma took a while to make the wish (besides the obvious answer of “suspense”) the in canon reason could be that in the time it took her to say the words, Broly and Gogeta were having their fight. Being a shiton faster than light makes this one answer. The other reason could be that both the fight and the wish happened at the same time, same as the tournament of power. Honestly the first reason sound like the better one. Can wait for the last movie.

Ash

is it just me or why cant i see the video their reacting to unless its supposed to be like that

mcbobproof1

Ehhhh maybe? I would recommend if it wasn’t a big spoiler but considering what happens I think it’s best if they decide to wait a a little longer or watch a YouTube summary covering the next two arcs. That and Goku vs Superman 3 are really good Dragon ball battles but there’s just to much going on in the manga. And since Toei is currently making Daima, it’s highly unlikely the next next two arcs will be animated. Even if they tease it as the end of Daima it will be another year before we get any news on it. But they can watch Vegito Vs Gogeta and Beerus Vs Galaxia, though the later comes with huge copyright issues.

Ash

You guys can finally react to Frieza vs Megatron death battle! It does have a bit of spoiler of the manga tho and I don’t think they will be a sequel to the anime after super for a long time.

Yoshitsune92

Just want to say RIP to Chris Ayers, the VA for Freeza. He passed in 2021 and this was his last time playing Freeza. He apparently recorded some of the lines for this movie while in a hospital bed. For being able to play such a cold hearted bastard, he was an amazing and sweet guy. He’s my favorite Freeza VA and will be missed heavily.

Silxvi

Yeah it was weird they didn’t recognize Kale’s “legendary” transformation, or Frieza not recognizing fusion when trunks and goten did it during Res F

victoria t

Goku telling Broly to call him kakarot is real character development because early on in the sayain saga goku didn’t care for his heritage so he hated being called that

Dreamville Paul2x

This movie also makes Gogeta canon now. His 1st appearance was in the Fusion Reborn movie to fight Janemba but that was non-canon so technically this is Goku and Vegeta's 1st fusion dance.

Kami_Psy

Also from this point forward, Broly and his companions are in the manga. There are a couple arcs in between this movie and Super Hero.

victoria t

Bardock the MVP, the entire franchise wouldn’t have happened without him

victoria t

Dang. I got behind on reactions again lol. I’ll have to watched this tomorrow when I’m off.

k c

The weird limbo that Super Hero is in now is always gonna make it messy. It feels like a lose-lose since either the Super Manga exclusive parts of that arc, will either never get animated, or get animated but likely at the cost of having to sit through the entire arc get a re-adaptation.

Shadowpunch13

I'd prefer the latter tbh. Super Hero felt like it didn't need anything added on story wise imo.

JT

Makes me wonder once we get the other arcs for super if they will redo super hero since it's after those. Or if they'll just do one recap episode explaining the movie.

feltskate ._.

Goku only thinks he knows how much power Beerus actually has, but what he 100% knows for certain is that he has a type of energy that can instantly vaporize you, and yet he still thinks Broly is stronger? Goku please. 😂

Shadowpunch13

I feel the same about not fully appreciating this film when it released. It might have been a little over stimulating on the big screen with all the moving action and colorful lighting, but I definitely think this is the best dragon ball movie when it comes to fights.

feltskate ._.

I think I read somewhere that that tiny shot of silver hair was completely incidental but either way I don't buy it for a second. Perhaps it wasn't ever storyboarded but some animator just decided, "Fuck it" and threw it in there as an easter egg. That's not entirely unheard of, it actually just happened recently with an episode of Diama.

Shadowpunch13

Peak and nothing but Peak. I'll say it'll be interesting seeing the reaction to super hero especially considering a certain moment which I think they'll probably get mixed up with other thing. iykyk.

feltskate ._.

LETS GOOO!!! Loved your reactions and DAMN this has got to be one of the CRISPIEST animated movies I’ve ever seen in my life. The animation was a masterpiece and the music just fit in all the right places in accordance to the animation, chef’s kiss! What makes this movie amazing is also seeing Frieza trying to make a presence in the series after the TOP. He could’ve wished for anything, but just wanted to grow taller 😂 and getting his ASS BEAT for a whole hour was priceless 😂😂 Definitely looking forward to the reaction to the next movie, and I know for sure Bethany is gonna love this one!

J Sal

Gogeta was straight up menace during the fight, throws the rainbow ball at Broly to see if it eliminates him or if he's good, Broly is still standing but still attempts to Kamehameha the poor guy lol Gogeta knew he was the shit when he went SSJ Blue.

Cynergy

a 2 hour break?

REDE

The look of pure fear on Broly's face right as that Kamehameha is coming straight at him is haunting. That fucking blast literally scared him sane again. (Now if only it were a Big Bang Kamehameha)

Shadowpunch13

Beerus's power is pretty much a moving goal post and I wouldn't have it any other way 😂

Cynergy

It was so amazing finally getting to see you guys react to my 2nd favorite DB Movie ever (right behind Superhero) and what I'd call the "Into the Spider-Verse" of DB because my god this art style and animation is my absolute favorite in the franchise and what I would've loved to see as the main art style going forward plus I got to experience this in the actual Cinema and it was one of the best times to be a DB Fan. But next movie I'm sure you'll love it as well especially being the Mr. Piccolo fans that you two are.

seels

One more subtle and underrated part of the movie imo is Frieza. Even though he's still a vile piece of shit and completely reveling in it, he's still very different than when we first seem him. This is a Frieza who has been soundly humbled on more than one occasion, who knows he isn't King Shit anymore and it definitely shows. His mannerisms when conversing with his men is a lot more playful than it is callous and you can tell he's not just fueled on hatred and rage like after his first resurrection. He despises them but still seems to hold just a tiny bit of respect for Goku and Vegeta and unlike any other time we see him, is willing to cut his losses and live to fight another day instead of regressing into a pouting child. It's really quite unbelievable that the day has come where even Frieza has had the tiniest bit of character development. Edit: Frieza wishing to be taller is peak Toriyama btw and I will not hear otherwise.

Shadowpunch13

Oh yeah, one last thing. You might consider it odd that Goku and Vegeta didn't use SSBE or MUI in this movie. This was likely due to the production schedules of the DBS anime and this DBS: Broly overlapping as the two were only nine months apart between their full releases. That might sound like a lot, but you'd be surprised how long anime can take to create, especially with animation of this caliber. Left just enough time to leave in no more than a little reference to MUI when Goku's turning SSB.

JT

I predict something might happen with Cheelai and Broly, girl was definitely low key thirsting for him through out the film, looks like you both noticed that though 😜

Cynergy

Thank you both for reacting to this film so quickly, glad it didnt disappoint. The animation for this film is sublime, my only disappointment is that I didnt fully appreciate it when i saw this in theater. Im glad they gave Broly a proper backstory compared to Z Broly. The Saiyan transformations were insanely beautiful, it was awesome seeing them all cycling through all their forms. Not sure whether you both noticed, but Gokus hair went silver when he ultimately transformed to SSJ Blue. Most theorise that Goku may have tried to tap into UI but because his heart wasnt calm, he couldnt sustain the form. Frieza being beaten up for an hour was just hilarious, he definitely deserved that and more haha.

Cynergy

Very, VERY ironically, I remember having to drive through a literal blizzard to get to the theatre in time. But oh yeah, seeing this up on an IMAX screen was peak (not to rub it in). Side note: "Blizzard," the insert song is a huge banger and I do love how Sumitomo adapted parts of it into the score proper. (e.g. You can hear it during the Gogeta vs Broly, when it hard cuts to Cheelai and Lemo running through the spaceship).

Shadowpunch13

The very quick cut of Bardock trying to blast back the Supernova always felt to me like there was much more storyboarded there, but it got cut last minute. BoG and RoF got "extended" cuts as opposed to the theatrical ones so I hoped that's what would've happened here but oh well. Maybe one day, like you said.

Shadowpunch13

Oh I actually think I watched the reaction but I might’ve forgot

Di Or

I'll have to watch this when I get home and then I'll share my thoughts, since this came along when I leave for work.

Jason Rogue

Throwing my own hat into the ring, I am in agreement as a part of the crowd that prefers the original Z iteration of Bardock, for most of the reasons specified above. I will say however that his portrayal in this movie is far more enjoyable at the very least compared to Minus at least imo. Still, I can look past it for the most part. There's really only one part of Super Bardock's "pacifism" and more humanistic nature that does genuinely bother me but it's not explored here, only in the Super Manga so perhaps a story for another time. And hell yeah, I'd be up for a reaction of the original Father of Goku, although that is also a DLC for Kakarot, so I assume they may experience it that way.

Shadowpunch13

There's an ongoing meme that Frieza got beat around for an hour or so straight up until Whis decided to step in and stretch his legs.

Jason Rogue

Why you gotta say stuff like that LMAO. Just makes it burn more.

JT

The recoil on that kamehameha gave me the shivers, there would have been no surviving that.

Cynergy

Bro, only reason I got back into Dragon Ball was because of this movie. When it was announced, I had to catch up, so I watched BoG, Resurrection F, and then all of Super. Got to see this in theater, and when I say it was loud, it was LOUD. The rumbling of the cinema is something I don't think I'll ever experience again. Not even Endgame shook the theater that hard.

Jason Rogue

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

JT

Fucking six exactly. You mad bastard.

Shadowpunch13

1:36:31 “But Broly, call me Kakarot”. This line right here is so great for two reasons. 1) It’s funny that Goku has to tell Broly to call him Kakarot when that was such a big component of Z Broly’s personality (after the first movie). 2) It demonstrates how Goku has come to accept his Saiyan heritage. During the Saiyan Saga, there was so much going on that made Goku resent that part of him. Broly is the first person he insists on someone calling him that name. Only pure-blooded Saiyans get the K-word pass.

JT

They've seen it.

Jason Rogue

There’s a Hulk vs Broly death battle I think you guys should check out eventually.

Di Or

And thus, the multi-year fan theory that Bulma has been using the dragonballs to routinely wish herself younger was confirmed in canon. Also, Broly is not stronger than Beerus. Gogeta isn't even stronger than Beerus. Goku has no idea how strong Beerus actually is.

Jennifer Sunderland

1:27:44 It's at this point I really start to feel bad for Broly. Don't know if you noticed, but once Gogeta turns SS Blue, Broly doesn't seem to land a single meaningful blow. It just becomes Gogeta beating up on a guy who's become that of a cornered animal. This is only emphasized here at (1:29:00), which is what I consider to be the scariest Kamehameha ever. The track that accompanies this scene is titled "Full Force Kamehameha", and it's a very close contender to my favorite Sumitomo song (only beaten out by the Ultra Instinct theme). It's not the song of a heroic victory. It's a song that sounds like something tragic is about to happen.

JT

I love how we all grew to like Frieza and his nature throughout the Tournament of Power, but this movie quickly reminded us how much of a piece of shit he is and I'll tell you that I laughed out loud when he in canon got the beating of his life for a whole hour. P.S, Gogeta is the cooler fusion

Christopher Lovejoy

1:26:29 That "orb" is Gogeta's signature attack, the "Soul Punisher" (aka Stardust Breaker). The last time we saw it was back in the Fusion Reborn movie, where Gogeta had made his debut. Uploads of people reacting to this movie in theaters showed them popping off when they saw this moment. It's implied to only target evil and impurity, which is why it didn't completely eliminate Broly like it did Janemba.

JT

1:22:20 Whis' Ultra Instinct was so strong he dodged Gogeta's Instant Transmission. Which is, you know, instant.

JT

1:20:45 The “tornado effect” that this film uses for the fusion of Gogeta has become the new standard for DB fusion animations ever since. Video games also use it, whether it be with the Potara earrings or the Metamoran dance.

JT

1:19:00 Credit to Frieza, guy withstood a beatdown from a Super Saiyan Broly for an hour straight. He's as resilient as ever.

59:00 During the promotional build-up to DBS: Broly, we had gotten character sheets revealing the design for SS God Vegeta. Needless to say, people were absolutely elated to see him fight in this form through animation for the first time ever. As I said during the T.o.P, this was something Vegeta had only used in the manga up until this point. Based on Goku’s dialogue (in the manga), it’s implied that Vegeta just learned how to tap into it after having so much experience using god ki through SSB and SSBE.

57:09 You know the animation’s on point when even going regular old Super Saiyan manages to feel impactful again. That applies to SS God and Blue here as well. They’ve never looked better than in this movie.

JT

It was definitely an epic theater moment!!!

This movie is a masterpiece, forever glad they refreshed Broly’s character and gave him…character with a great story lol, still a badass monster but with a good heart and backstory that’s not “evil bc Goku cried” 😂

43:12 I'd say it's just Toriyama keeping up with the fruit name puns he had going with the Frieza Force members (besides the Ginyu Force). Berryblue: Blueberry Cheelai: Lychee Lemo: Lemon Cui: Kiwi Dodoria: Durian Appule: Apple Raspberry: Raspberry Zarbon: Zabon, Japanese name for pomelo

JT

I was hoping to see this reaction today but wasn’t confident. Lucky me!

36:28 "That is absolutely ridiculous, I love it." Well, that's a good sign that you'll be enjoying OGDB.

GO BROLY GO BROLY GO BROLY COME ON BROLY 🔥🔥🔥🗣🗣🗣

My biggest regret as a Dragon Ball fan: Not getting to see this masterpiece in theaters.

19:30 Some extra info on Gine: She was a former member of Bardock’s four-person Saiyan team. Due to her abnormally gentle nature for a Saiyan, she had to constantly be saved by Bardock whenever they got into combat as she was not cut out to be a fighter. This led to them developing romantic feelings for each other, and of course, becoming parents to Raditz and Goku. As you can see in this scene, Gine resigned from fighting and went to on work at a meat distribution center on Planet Vegeta. Like the rest of the Saiyans, her name is a vegetable pun. It’s an anagram of “negi”, the Japanese word for “spring onion”. This adorably makes Goku’s Saiyan family all named after root vegetables. Like her son Raditz, Gine’s a character that seems to have developed a cult following among some DB fans. Some feel that we should be getting more material that involves Gine and Raditz since they’re the brother and mother of Goku (including me). She makes an appearance in the video game DB Fusions (which I greatly appreciated).

Fuck ya let's gooooo!

Hopefully it’s the American version cause the music is so fitting of Broly’s savagery lol

BTW I still recommend watching the original version of the first Z Broly movie just so you can get your own thoughts on how Super Broly compares to Z Broly. Unlike the Father of Goku, I don't really insist on either OST over the other.

While Norihito Sumitomo is also serving as composer here, there is not a Dragon Ball ANYTHING that sounds like this movie. The tracks that include the chanting of fighters’ names during Goku vs Broly and Gogeta vs Broly in particular were inspired by the cheering on of U7 by fans in those Latin American watch parties I talked about on ep 130. While I was kinda put off by them during my first watch, they REALLY grew on me. I’ll listen to that shit even when I’m not watching this movie lmao.

JT

IMO DBS Broly still remains the golden standard for Dragon Ball in the animation department. This is largely thanks to Naohiro Shintani serving as character designer for the film, as opposed to Tadayoshi Yamamuro (who was the character designer for the anime). While Toriyama drew up the initial concept art for characters, Shintani is the one who adapted them into designs meant to be used by the animators. Unlike the stiff and over-detailed designs of Yamamuro, Shintani’s designs are simpler and easier to animate with fluidity and expressiveness.

In an interview with DBS Broly’s director Tatsuya Nagamine, it was said that the original script Toriyama wrote for the film was trimmed down to fit the desired 90-ish minute length of the movie. Most credible translations suggest that Toriyama’s script would’ve been around 3 hours if fully processed into a screenplay. To this day, it isn’t known as to what exactly was cut from the initial script, though some fans have speculated that it may have had to do with Bardock’s story due to how “rushed” it feels in this movie, especially with the destruction of Planet Vegeta and his last stand. Perhaps said cut content could see the light of day should this movie ever get the Battle of Gods/Res F treatment of being turned into an arc (not that I’m thrilled by the prospect after seeing what happened with those arcs). Who knows?

Hoo boy, there’s a lot to discuss about Bardock’s history in regard to this movie, so I’ll try to summarize it as best I can here: The version of Bardock in this movie is based on “Dragon Ball Minus: Departure of the Fated Child”. It was a bonus chapter made by Toriyama that was published back in 2014 along with “Jaco the Galactic Patrolman”. It’s best described as Toriyama’s retelling of the story told in the DBZ TV Special “Bardock: The Father of Goku”. Since this version of Bardock is the one made under Toriyama’s vision, this is the one that should be considered canon, along with all of the events depicting the past of Planet Vegeta in the movie’s first third. In this bonus chapter (that lasts about three pages), Toriyama finally introduced us to Goku’s mother Gine, and revealed that the Frieza Force had gotten word not only of the legend of the Super Saiyan but also the legend of the Super Saiyan God. Which is interesting because you’d think that Vegeta would’ve learned of it if they did of all people, but hey. Toriyama also tweaked the events that played out during the final moments of the Saiyans and Planet Vegeta, as seen in this movie. Bardock: The Father of Goku initially aired back in 1990. While this special was not written by Toriyama, he would later adapt Bardock’s design and character into the manga’s telling of the Frieza Saga. Because the manga’s design of Bardock resembled the one in the special, most DB fans had always assumed that the Father of Goku was to be considered “canon” bc unlike most DB films the events of that story fit into the timeline of the main series. With the introduction of DB Minus and the events depicted in DBS: Broly, that’s no longer the case. That being said, there’s been quite a bit of conflict among fans as they don’t like Minus’ Bardock compared to Z’s Bardock. From what I can tell this is bc of a few reasons: 1) Toriyama took away his iconic red headband. 2) Fans preferred the characterization of Z’s Bardock as opposed to Minus’ Bardock. Z’s Bardock was written as this regular low-class Saiyan dirtbag who only had any real care for the other Saiyans in his squad. He didn’t care about his son and never had any real relationship with Goku’s mother. The other low-class Saiyans didn’t seem to have much respect for him either. Minus’ Bardock turned him into a noticeably more compassionate character. When Toriyama was asked to describe his Bardock’s personality, he answered: “Bardock is a Saiyan, too, he is warlike, but compared to other Saiyans, who are cold-hearted and of simple thoughts, he also happens to possess calm judgment and a small measure of humanity. Because of his actions of ‘saving his companions’, which is rare for a Saiyan, he is greatly adored among a portion of the low-class warriors”. In other words, a low- class hero. Very different. 3) Z Bardock’s learning of Planet Vegeta’s destruction through means of seeing the future through visions is seen as more interesting. Minus Bardock never really “finds out” that Frieza’s going to destroy the planet and just assumes that it’s about to happen. Doesn’t come off as dire of a story. While I don’t mind Toriyama’s version of Bardock in Minus and this movie, I will admit that I’m part of the crowd that prefers his characterization and backstory in The Father of Goku more. IMO it feels way more fitting to how pure-blooded Saiyans were described back in DBZ. That being said, I don’t go as far as to say that Toriyama’s version of Bardock “isn’t canon” simply because I don’t like him as much (unlike some fans). My preferences do not overrule the creator of DB’s vision. I hope this explanation of the two Bardocks was easy enough to follow. If not, I’m always open to answering follow-up questions. With how polarizing of a subject this is, this comment is likely not gonna be the last you hear of it anyway. On that note, I highly encourage you to watch the original version of The Father of Goku, reaction or not. If it ends up being a reaction I suggest keeping the Japanese OST on (though I know many here will disagree with that).

Fun Fact: Cheelai is voiced by Erica Lindbeck, a name I’m sure you’ve become very familiar with. VA for Loona in Helluva Boss, Black Cat in PlayStation Spider-Man, and Peppermint in Hi-Fi Rush. I’m positive there’s more you’ve heard her in.

Since this film was primarily written by Akira Toriyama, it marks the first time that Broly, Paragus, and Gogeta have made a canon appearance. The Broly featured in the DBZ films is now referred to by fans as “Z Broly” while this newer one is either called “DBS Broly” or “Super Broly”. Z Broly (particularly in the first Broly movie) was a plain sadistic menace who took joy in bloodshed. Super Broly is meant to be less of a “villain” and more of an animalistic Tarzan-like guy who hates fighting and someone that you’re meant to feel sorry for. Some people prefer Z Broly because he had a bit more “personality” than Super Broly, whose dialogue starts to consist mostly of screaming past the first half of this movie. I find myself liking Super Broly more simply cause he has more potential as a character. For me, this movie and what comes after feel like they’re just the introduction to the new Broly. There’s plenty you could do with the new connections he’s formed with Cheelai, Lemo, and the U7 Saiyans. It’ll also be fun to see a canon Broly fighting alongside our main cast should the writers start using him more. Hell maybe take him along with Goku and Vegeta to Planet Sadala. Get him to meet Kale so we can see two Brolys fight against/with each other.

JT

ABSOLUTE PEAK HAS ARRIVED! DBS: Broly is still my favorite DB film. I really like Super Hero, but Broly’s animation and music are so stellar that they keep it at the very top for me. There’s so much I could gush about with this movie, but I’ll try to hold myself back (ish). Edit: Sorry, I failed.
