I forget the source, since it's not in the anime or manga, but she found a book among her Dad's things that told the legend and (I think) she already had one, so she analyzed the energy signature from hers and built the radar from it. Again, I don't know the source, as it's been a long while, so take what I say with a few grains of salt. So, the anime doesn't say it, but during Bulma's bath, in the manga, Bulma states she's 16 and Goku claims he's 13 (this will be corrected later). "I can't rule the world with one ball." I saw that chortle, Ken. The missing balls scene is one of the best moments of early Dragon Ball. Your reactions to it were everything I was hoping for. I don't know how far you've recorded, but the meeting of Bulma and Roshi...I look forward to your reactions to it.

It's also funny following along as you watch because the video of the episode I have playing alongside your reaction is muted but with subtitles on. The sub-translations and the dub clearly don't add up, but it brings quite a bit of humor, knowing what was altered just to tone down the lewdness of the dialogue in Dragon Ball. Goku literally has no filter.

I know he did designs for "filler" characters and may have approved the scripts of their stories, but nothing that confirms he was the one to write any of it (indicating they're not canon). I enjoy a lot of those episodes as well though.

Others claim if Toei, Funimation, or any other studio include it without any of the creator's directions, it's noncanon. Toriyama has written the filler and characters I the anime. What I consider filler, personally, if it's just a side adventure that doesn't truly move the story along. I think there are maybe 6 or 7 episodes I consider filler throughout all of OGDB. They're not unpleasant to watch, but you can do without watching them, but I did and I enjoyed them.

2025-02-13 20:35:23 +0000 UTCNoteworthy changes/facts: Title Card: Original translation of the Japanese title, "What the-! No Balls?!" (Yes, this is referencing exactly what you think it is). Goku's Age: The dub entirely cuts it for now, but during the scene where Goku walks in on Bulma bathing, reveals Goku's age. First it begins with Goku asking why Bulma has a butt on her chest (nice), leading Bulma to explain they're breasts and a kid like him shouldn't even care about such things. Goku corrects her insisting he's fourteen, which is why Bulma reacts by throwing shit at him, calling him a pervert since he's only two years (supposedly) younger than her. Pilaf's Ambitions: Pilaf in the sub, insists that he wants to rule the world, not for selfish reasons, but to stop someone truly evil from using the Balls to wish for world domination. He claims that his rule will grant people true freedom and specifically cites, those who urinate in public, and those who fart (which is what sets up the following turn of events) getting what they truly deserve. Filler: The scene with Goku meeting Shu and Mai this early was only in the anime. In the manga, Goku leaves, and within the same page, only a few panels later, he's immediately back with the wolf. (In fact, all the scenes with the Pilaf gang thus far have been filler). This episodes adapts Dragon Ball Chapters 2 and the first 7 or so pages of Chapter 3. I never mentioned it but Episode 1 covered Chapter 1, though it was an elongated, 30 pages. Normal chapters from here on are about half that.

2025-02-13 20:34:42 +0000 UTCIn the anime it's never explicitly clear how Bulma or Pilaf knew about the Dragon Balls, but we just go with it. By the way, everything you knew about Goku, forget it, this isn't Saiyan Goku, this is Goku who is a young boy who's just incredibly strong with a tail. Anything that says he's an alien, that's just what they assume as who knows a human that has a tail. The Power Pole is explained later on, and we do see why as he gets older he no longer wields it. All will be explained in due time, it'll just take about 100 episodes for y'all to see though. It's never stated but yes, Bulma is 16, Goku's age gets revealed later on as he currently doesn't know.

Because the OGDB anime was made under the assumption that a good chunk of the viewers in Japan had read the manga, Toei decided to include more scenes with them to help pad things out since many audience members had already become familiar with the trio by the time this episode premiered. Not trying to list every single deviation from the manga throughout this journey (bc that would get a bit annoying), but I'll bring them up under the following conditions: 1) There's lore that isn't mentioned by the dub and/or sub. 2) If an anime exclusive scene/dialogue gives you lore that ISN'T in the manga. Remember, anything that wasn't written by Toriyama in OGDB and DBZ isn't considered canon. 3) An episode includes character writing that, while being non-canon, is actually a nice addition to the story IMO.
