Dragon Ball Daima Episode 1 Full Reaction

Comments

yeah Daima is absolute trash, wanted Ultra Ego and got Dragon Ball Cocomelon edition instead smh.

REDE

Trash?

k c

we had announced plans to watch daima awhile back but the dub never came to Netflix like we were promised it would. 😝

Bethany and Ken

Oh. nice. Going in blind with us 😀

Bethany and Ken

It's actually kinda crazy watching them at the same time. Lot of OG vibes in this 🙂

Bethany and Ken

This trash has helped me learn to appreciate GT a lot more.

REDE

So daima takes place less than 1 year after the buu arc as Trunks was 8 years old in the buu arc and in daima he is 9 years old plus the Dragonballs were used in the buu arc and because the Dragonballs are still stones, that means a year has not fully passed yet since the buu arc. Dragonball super takes place 4 years after the buu arc and probably three years after Daima.

Zaid

We have finally arrived to Daima, isn't the animation so beautiful? Meeting Shins siblings is really cool, they're both so pretty, I wonder if Shins whole family is good looking? 😂 The opening and closing theme songs are really catchy, loved that Ken was trying to sing-along to it. The way Shin and Kibito defused in Daima is definitely a small plot hole as it differs to the way they defused in Super.

Cynergy

Tf i decided to watch the sub and dub simultaneously ❤️ iykyk

Cynergy

Yeah, gohan only got beast so his "fans" who want him to act like goku would be happy he's strong again, my real problem with ep 18 is that we'll probably never see that thing again.

feltskate ._.

@feltskate To be honest, as it ages, I feel like indifference is how a lot of people are gonna look back on it. Like I said earlier, similar to that of Beast Gohan. Here's hoping the final two episodes give us something in the way of explanation.

Shadowpunch13

It’s on episode 18 right now but I believe there will be 20 eps. Also nah they just finished super and just started OG dragon ball this week. (Also playing through the game DBZ Kakarot)

Kami_Psy

That Buu saga recap is animated to look almost one to one with Akria Toriyama's manga. I think it is the best looking the series has ever been being such a fan of the Manga's art. If the 50th anniversary of DB is just them reanimating the series start to finish, I hope they do it like that. It would be so cool having the series look just like the manga.

feltskate ._.

Their first time beating me to a dragon ball series… But I’m trying to binge it all at once. How many episodes are there? Also, I thought they started Daima a while back.

k c

Obviously keeping it spoiler free, but ep 18 was probably the first ep of Diama I was indifferent about. I know why people would be excited, but this does feel like Akio Iyoku had a big say in what happen in said episode. Maybe it'll be explained a bit more next 2 episodes, but as of now it just feels like fan service for a group of DB fans.

feltskate ._.

@J Sal Damn, sorry to hear that. Figured it was gonna happen to most peeps anyway, but I tried my best down here.

JT

Man what a wild experience! I'm watching this show for the first time with you guys, so I'm just as blind lol! Great start, but I'm still intrigued by the plot, I'm curious where the show goes from here, but I like it so far. I'm curious to see what Goku does in the series, seeing him young again, and definitely looking forward to Vegeta since we didn't get much of his younger personality earlier in the series

J Sal

@JT it's too late, Twitter hit me with the spoilers. Damn it!

J Sal

🤷‍♂️ I suppose that’s just the way Toriyama goes about writing these things. I guess it’s kinda similar to how Potara fusion is just made into existence at a moment’s notice in the Buu saga. Not saying that writing style is a good or bad thing btw, but it is pretty par for the course for Dragon Ball. Sometimes it works, sometimes not so much.

Shadowpunch13

A callback scene of a character using a power he has, and… what just happened, are two entirely different spectra of brainless fanservice. Just because they can explain what they’ve done away doesn’t mean anything to me. That show was NOT being written week by week. That was a show that has been in preproduction since 2019. They had at least 2 years for this. What the fuck were they doing in the first 17 episodes? Why randomly drop something like that two episodes away from the finish line? And doing it in a way that makes closing the show more nonsensical.

Hohoho

As easily it could be swept under the rug and not be given an explanation, it could also be explained away with one measly throwaway line: (It was a one-time power-up thanks to Neva). Again, whether that does indeed happen or not is obviously the main question. But after reading Iyoku's interview, this is significantly less shocking. I will wait however for the final two episodes before giving my final thoughts, though if I were to make an assumption, I'll probably feel about it, the same way I do about Super Hero. An asspull, perhaps, but it makes for good spectacle and not in the frivolous Z Broly or Vegeta blowing himself up for no reason during the TOP, kind of way. Who's to say though, my mind may change.

Shadowpunch13

“This is nothing compared to that” is a bold faced lie, and you know it. At least they had the basic decency to foreshadow something, even the bare minimum of it, years before plopping it onto people’s plates. Two episodes to wrap up the mess they made, tch.

Hohoho

Yes, Daima! The visuals here are impeccable. Just like how DBS Broly was Toriyama’s version of canonizing Z Broly, Daima is Toriyama’s canonized take on Dragon Ball GT. While the plot is entirely different, it borrows several elements from GT, like turning Goku into a kid. I have my opinions of the show but I’m waiting for 2 more weeks to see how it ends and collect my thoughts

Hohoho

The entire final arc of Super is little more than fan-servicey, pandering hand-wankery, so this is honestly nothing compared to that. If we get to the end of the series and everything goes unexplained, then so be it, but until then, I'm just gonna enjoy the ride.

Shadowpunch13

I respect your opinion, but hey, I had fun with it. What else can I say?

JT

I absolutely despised episode 18. It is everything wrong with how Dragon Ball can get. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it I suppose.

Hohoho

Something you may not know , but the original voice for kid goku (Stephanie Nadolny) returned for this after years of it being Colleen Clinkenbeard instead. Don’t get me wrong, Colleen makes a great kid goku, but for lots of people Stephanie is their kid goku. 🙂

Chris Collier

36:12 Well, it's not a spoiler, so I guess I'll just come out and say that it's nothing more than a stylistic choice.

JT

11:11 Not quite. Gomah's name pun is the Japanese word for "sesamum", that being "goma". Most names of native-born Demon Realm residents in this series are named after flowers.

JT

So they’ve kept the opening in the original language. Works for me lol. The English covers of DBS’ opening weren’t bad, but I still preferred the originals. I do suggest watching the outro next episode btw, just to get your reactions to it. Anyway… JAAN! JAKA JAAN! 🔥

JT

It bears repeating so... ARE THE DAIMA HATERS IN THE ROOM WITH US? NO? I’LL WAIT.

Shadowpunch13

As someone who’s a big lore nut when it comes to Dragon Ball, I’ve absolutely adored all of the worldbuilding that’s in Daima. Thus, I’ve decided to start a new series of comments compiling the big lore revelations for each episode (when needed) to help synthesize things. I'll be trying to stick to tidbits that aren't as "in your face" like the introduction of Sir Warp: - Before Dabura became Demon King, the Demon Realm was ruled by his father “Abra” with the power of an artifact called the “Tertian Oculus” or the “Evil Third Eye”. This powerful artifact was passed down from Demon King to Demon King. If they ever decide to give Dabura a mother they better name her “Ka”. - Shin and Kibito managed to defuse thanks to the gas produced by Buu’s body. Getting this explanation in an official series is cool bc this was something fans had long speculated to be the case with Vegito. This gives us an alternate means of defusing besides using the Namekian Dragon Balls (as shown in DBS' U6 vs U7 arc). It is curious tho bc they would need to end up fusing back into Kibito Kai in order for Battle of Gods to make sense. Guess we’ll see what happens regarding that. - Namekians, or rather their ancestors, originated from the Demon Realm. Words can’t describe how happy this makes me. One of Toriyama’s final gifts to us is retconning his retcon of making the Namekians alien slug people instead of demons. They’re demons again! YES! Thank you, Toriyama!

JT

An interview with Akio Iyoku recently came out that revealed some interesting info on Daima’s orgin: - The idea to start a new DB TV series was proposed 6 years ago during DBS Super Hero’s production. At first Toriyama’s involvement was going to be minimal, but he started getting so into it that he ended up creating most of it by the end. - Daima was intended as a show that parents could watch with their kids, so it was made for both kids and adults in their 30s who grew up with DBGT. (Not my speculation, those were his words). - The decision to make Goku a kid again was made to broaden the target demographic, but it was Toriyama’s idea to have the rest of the cast turn into kids too. - The general overview of Dragon Ball that plays at the beginning of some of Daima’s episodes was included in response to Toriyama's concern that people wouldn’t know of DB’s story.

JT

So right off the bat, you can see that Daima freaking blows DBS out of the water in terms of production value. This is owed largely to two things: 1) Tadayoshi Yamamuro is not serving as the character designer and chief animation director. Yamamuro’s modern character designs are widely resented due to their rigidness and straight edges, as they aren’t well suited for fluid and expressive animation. For Daima, the character designer is Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, who served the same role on DBZ starting during the Cell Games through the end of GT. His designs alongside a strong team of highly praised animators such as Aya Komaki, Yuya Takahashi, Yoshitaka Yashima, etc do not share the same issue. 2) Daima does not share DBS’ hellish weekly production schedule. Word from the grapevine says that Daima was originally intended to be a web series (only on streaming) meant to celebrate DB’s 40 anniversary under the name “Dragon Ball Magic” until Fuji TV came in and decided it should air on television as well. This of course gave the production staff more time to work on each episode’s animation. Was getting really bad whiplash having to go from Daima to Super through your reactions lol.

JT

JAAN! JAKA JAAN!

Shadowpunch13

While Toriyama played a partial role in writing DBS, he was much more hands-off compared to how he was involved with Daima. Everything here from the plot, environment designs, and character designs is much more under his vision. No vague manuscripts being handled mostly by Toyotaro or Toei here.

JT

Posted this on OGDB ep 2 but it matters so much here that I MUST repeat it: Just finished ep 18 of Daima. Holy fuck. To anyone who's reading this and is still just sticking with the dub: Ya'll better take every precaution for spoilers you can. Seriously. Things are about to go absolutely insane online.

JT

Holy heck I wasn’t expecting you guys to react to Dragon Ball Daima until you guys finished OG Dragon Ball! Good Friday.

Yoshitsune92

Holy shit I wasn't ready for all these!! Thank you so much for posting these when I'm not at work!! Today's such a good day to be a DB fan!
