The Last of Us II Part 2 - Where IT happens

I really think they could've done the death in a different way bc by giving Abby such little time on screen you just immediately hate her. Perhaps getting to Jackson to be a double agent, spending some time with Joel and Ellie on a mission before finding out that guy is Joel, give us a bit more personality and something to attach to so it makes the audience feel conflicted. Now it's just straight up murderous rampage time and remember Abby, you brought this on yourself.

1:12:40 You likely won't just be hearing this from me, but I gotta shout out the rope/cable physics in this game. Couldn't possibly justify through words how much effort it had to take from Naughty Dog to get these objects to behave this way, but believe me when I say it's nothing short of a technical marvel. I'm not as emotionally attached to Naughty Dog's titles as many others are, but even I can say that their animators and programmers know their shit. You could make a compelling puzzle game revolving around this one mechanic alone given how experimental you can get with the physics just in the little segments like this one.

That ending discussion has somehow made me even more curious about what you'll feel once the end arrives.

As JT mentioned this death was leaked, and I remembering being upset about the leaks aswell, but even after that people started making up fake story leaks probably just to get people even angrier than they already were. So going into this game people already made their minds up about how they feel. Not even to mention all the death threats and terrible things that were said pretty much to everyone who had worked on this game. As if they couldn't separate these fictional characters from reality.

Well can’t say we saw this coming when the game came out. This is probably the main reason for the games hate, which say something about the first game. People liked it so much that they got legit mad when this occurred. Wonder what else can happen in this game? *wink*

Yeess ken embrace your darkside. I was laughing so hard when you lashed out that dude who called joel putha

Yeah, people have done death threats for even minimal than this, but that's how people are. Was I absolutely fuming when I witnessed this? Oh yeah, but I vented my anger by having Abby killed in so many different ways when I play as her. Never go after real people, vent your anger differently.

Jason Rogue

holy crap. that is just...to actually make death threats from a freaking video game character...people...😒

Bethany and Ken

Oh yeah. Don't ask why I feel the need to remind you of this, but you don't necessarily have to kill every enemy in every encounter in The Last of Us. Many encounters have a means of escape w/o having to finish every enemy off as long as you manage to stealth your way through. Just got a feeling you'll wanna know this. Just saying.

With you two finally having witnessed this moment, I can now elaborate on why my "obtuse" history with this series has prevented me from getting too invested in it. Spoiler warning for anyone not familiar with the story moments shown in the video: Back in 2019-2020 during the lead-up to this game, I was not very familiar with TLOU. I only knew it was about a guy, a girl, and a cordyceps-related zombie apocalypse. I had also not had my ear to the ground as closely in terms of news in the gaming industry as I do now. Thus, I had not heard about the story's script leaking out through Reddit and 4Chan, which had already gotten people livid before this game even came out. While I was just browsing through the comments in a YT video from the PlayStation channel (might've been about Ghost of Tsushima iirc), where there was already outrage breaking out all over. None of them had specified as to why they were angry though. I took to Google trying to find out what had happened, and before I could even finish typing my search out completely, I was hit with this in the suggested search field: "the last of us part 2 Joel death". Since I wasn't too keen on checking out TLOU 2 that year (half bc I was too young to buy the game and half bc there were a lot of new releases I had wanted to play more that year), my only response mentally was "Huh, I guess that's why." I ended up playing TLOU Part 1 in 2023 and Part 2 just last year. As I've told you before, spoilers never leave my mind no matter how much time has passed, so I never got to experience the story of these games blindly. Sucks because I honestly don't find the gameplay or horror of TLOU to be too remarkable tbh. Not that I think those elements are outright bad/not fun in TLOU, I'm just lukewarm on them.

JT

So yeah, as Jason says, this moment was easily the number one thing that motivated the backlash against this game (though it's far from being the "only" reason). Not only did Laura Bailey get death threats on her, but they were also aimed at her newborn son. Horrible.

JT

Yeah, Laura Bailey got so many death threats. And I remember when the leaks came and everyone was always saying "hope you like golf", "Let's go golfing", "Abby goes fore". But that music, will never leave me.

Jason Rogue

That thumbnail expression tho. Something bad happened for sure!
