I mean, I guess I never paid it any attention. Sounds more or less the same to me.

k c

How OGDB pronounces Kamehameha.

Jason Rogue

Say it “this way?”

k c

i think the pilaf saga is great personally. great comedy i think. its not very action oriented but it's funny and sets up all the characters wonderfully

Shawn Waldrop

yeah dragonball really starts to take off once we get through with this pilaf saga, it's not very long fortunately.

Chad Mancillas

So, we're now introduced to the Kamehameha wave, with a different pronunciation. We only say Kamehameha this way when we add wave, other than that it's always Ka-me-ha-me-ha. About Goku mastering/doing a Kamehameha in 50 years. One, Goku knows nothing about ki. Two, being able to control your ki. Yet, here Goku perfectly executes a Kamehameha within a minute or so. Also, Kamehameha wave translates to Turtle Destruction Wave, which is fitting for the Turtle Hermit. You'll see a lot of tropes once you really get into anime. My personal favorite is the characters falling over after hearing something stupid, which the Ox King did when Master Roshi went "oopsie". Nose bleeds when seeing female anatomy. Female leads punching the shit out of either the lead or others.

Jason Rogue

Goku the baby kamehameha

Asuka Yousei 妖精帝國

Chi Chi is the same age as Goku 12

Ofc I knew they censored a lot, but I meant how were they able to get away with so much censorship and the show still having a successful broadcast. But then again lots of anime back then were still successful despite being censored to death (except One Piece, that level of censorship pretty much cancelled the show lol)

J Sal

I believe it took Roshi 50 years to create and perfect the Kamehameha Wave. So, he meant that it would probably take Goku 50 years to produce one. You'll learn that ki-control and ki-based attacks are uncommon in Dragon Ball. So, from Roshi's perspective, Goku would have first had to learn to master ki control. Of course, we all know how that turned out.

Cilla W

It indeed says it in the subbed version. I was surprised to know Kami was mentioned so early on.

Cilla W

LMAO, Oh yeah! I remember that!

Cilla W

Yeah, watching with the translated subs on was diabolical. It was like seeing Dragon Ball in a new light for the first time. I thought it was already unhinged, but the OG is straight up mental.

Cilla W

They didn't get away with it on Cartoon Network. Back then, there was so much censorship. Goku wore digitally added boxer during nude scenes, Bulma used a poorly edited in wad a cash instead of panties to lure Oolong a couple episodes ago, and I'm pretty sure any references to sex or nudity were completely removed, though I don't remember how they got around those. What's been released on DVD and streaming are the uncensored versions, not the broadcast versions.

Oh god, while in english, Roshi is rambling about remember the Ox King, in japanese, he's making a joke about Chichi's name, since chichi means breasts or milk in japanese. Let's be honest, Roshi had that coming for a long time. Plus, we got to see the first of many Roshi knockouts. Dang! The censorship! Where Roshi asked for a romantic walk in English, in Japanese...he wants to poke her boobs....good lord. Yep, Baby Gamara, based on the popular Kaiju. Also, you saw him referenced in the Yamcha Dragon Shortz by TFS. Man, the drastic difference in context during the agreement scene. A simple walk vs Poking her boobs; Bulma's reaction is a lot more justified in Japanese (though it's still justified in English, too). "It will take you 50 years to learn it." The immediate look on y'alls face. Perfect. Again, context; Oolong, as a child, is very justified in not wanting to transform to have his boobs poked. Also, dang, after Bulma threatened him, he said, "You're not going to die a nice death." OH GOD! Oolong went further! He didn't just flash, he allowed Roshi to put his face between, apparently. Some much bigger context; Chichi asks if Goku will come back and make her his bride. Goku says he doesn't understand, but "if that's what you want, then sure." "Poor Yamcha...he could've had a date with Bulma." As if he'd survive. The man can't even talk to her. Yeah, the eternal life is glossed over, but that is why Roshi is still alive. He's actually several hundred years old and, unless killed (AND STAYS DEAD), will never die. The Fountain of Youth is apparently a dub thing, because in Japanese, turtle said it was just an elixir that grants eternal life, so I don't think it stops aging, so it wouldn't help Bulma later.

The “Shadow Realm” one is still the best 😂

J Sal

Ah yes the infamous cousins of Sailor Moon, censorship at its finest 😂

Cynergy

Yeah it's a very annoying anime trope for guys to have nosebleeds when seeing women anatomy (it's funny at first but gets straight up overused and it gets ridiculous). I still can't believe they got away with showing this on Cartoon Network back 20+ years ago cause this stuff is wild lmao

J Sal

The dub was heavy on anime censorship around the time this came out, so I'm not too surprised (my sister told me they censored out a gay couple in Sailor Moon)

J Sal

Wild! They changed a lot of details.

victoria t

Love this trivia!

Bethany and Ken

Baby's first Kamehameha, from damaging a car to taking on a GOD, Goku definitely has come so very far, makes me a little teary lol

Cynergy

18:16 Freeza would be proud…that explains his thirst for Yamcha in Fighterz 😂😂

27:25 Chi Chi is around Goku's age at this point (so about 12). The duality and ridiculousness of her character is meant to be the joke. The idea of this little girl who acts all passive and sweet, yet is armed with battle armor, a helmet w/ a blade and lasers, and a tendency to be quick to violence is just part of Toriyama's sense of humor. EDIT: As a matter of fact, I just remembered a Q&A excerpt that communicates Toriyama's mindset behind writing Chi-Chi and why her character transitions from the description above to how she is later in the series, which I'll drop right here: Q: Who do you prefer : Bulma or Chi-Chi? Toriyama: "To be honest, I’m really not fond of Chi-Chi as a character. (laughs) In the middle of the comic, I started to think, “I don’t want to draw her anymore,” and, sort of as a way of spiting myself, I decided, “you’ll have to draw her if she gets married to Goku, so marry them off!” So, I drew her as a kind of punishment. (laughs)" Nakatsuru: "So that was your reason behind it! (laughs)" Toriyama: "The women I draw all have the same sort of personality. I can’t draw gentle girls; I only know how to draw ones who are strong-willed."

26:08 There's a few different explanations that DB has given us for Roshi's immortality: OGDB dub: He drank from the "Fountain of Youth". OGDB sub/manga: He drank an immortality elixir. DBS: It's revealed during the Goku and Krillin filler two parter (where they go into that magical forest of illusions) that Roshi gets his immortality by eating the Paradise Herbs that grow there. In all honesty, the mention of the fountain/elixir isn't meant to be much more than a gag that makes fun of Roshi's stupidity/perversion.

JT

Poor Bulma, aka the constant victim of sexual assault in db

victoria t

I got the manga right here with me, and this is the exchange: Goku: "This Kinto-Un (Nimbus) you gave me is awesome!" Roshi: "Of course it is! I got it straight from Kami-sama himself"

JT

Fair. I don't think "Kuririn" would've exactly caught on in the west either lmao.

Shadowpunch13

Tbf the way we still pronounce "Saiyan" isn't technically right either, but ain't nobody gonna be raising objections for that. But yeah, I get exactly where you're coming from lol.

JT

Does it? Bc I didn’t think we find out how he got it til later during *that* arc and didn’t think we found out about Kami yet. I’ll have to check it out

victoria t

Don’t forget Roshi got jacked in the fight against Frieza in Res F

victoria t

14:28 Ah yes, the "Ka-MAY-ha-MAY-ha" wave. Just like the "Kay-o-ken" that he learned from King Kay.

Shadowpunch13

15:13 Extra bit of trivia: Roshi's first Kamehameha is the first time the manga uses two pages to display one panel. The beam comes off as extra impressive as it extends across the two pages.

JT

I find it so weird that they bother censoring things like this when they know they can't very well censor what actually winds up getting shown later. Man I wish Kai had just started at Pilaf, it's so strange to me that it didn't.

Shadowpunch13

11:29 The dub plays it down by saying Roshi just wants to go for a walk/date with Bulma here, but in the sub/manga, the deal is explicitly said to be that Bulma must let him grope her chest.

JT

8:35 This here is Baby Gamera, Roshi’s only known method of being able to fly. In addition to Star Wars, Toriyama was also a massive fan of Kaiju films like Godzilla, Gamera, Ultra Man, etc. This was especially apparent in Dr. Slump, where he would just draw them in as background characters a lot of the time. You two technically saw Baby Gamera for the first time in a very brief moment back in DBS episode 68.

JT

Don't recall if the sub says it, but in the manga Roshi mentions that he actually got the Flying Nimbus from Kami himself right around here (3:32).

JT

Here we have the first moment of not only a Kamehameha, but also the first instance of ki being used. Something that I can still appreciate about OGDB is that ki is used a lot more sparingly. It makes it seem like a more mythical energy, and being able to use it is a sign that you’re a true master of martial arts in this world.

JT

I’ll probably have to bring this up much later down the road, but in the manga, this moment is the last we see of Chi Chi and the Ox King for a very long time. This fact is pretty relevant to a certain scene, but I can’t quite elaborate on that yet.
