Bethany and Ken

Top 5 is a good question, most recently we were jamming out to the Dragon Ball Super theme song and that made it into our playlist on Spotify so I can confidently say that would be the agreed upon favorite, but we'll have to discuss the top 5.

Bethany and Ken

Or the actual explanation is that the English Dub treats Puar as a girl and continues to later on. Japanese always treats him as a boy.

Dragon Ballโ€™s pretty random. Anyway, leaving that aside, I find it funny that itโ€™s the name of the episode but only shows up for like a minute or so.

Seeing Ken vibe with the opening makes me wonder; What would y'all consider your top 5 Dragon Ball themes so far? "None of them has any balls...maybe between that man's balls." *Dead silence* "You know how I feel about crude jokes." That scene is definitely different in Japanese. I'm pretty sure the Shirley joke was Airplane, but I appreciate the recognition of Leslie Nielson. (Saw you corrected yourself at the end, so never mind) "I thought you were going to strip me and ." "How could you think of something so perverted?!" Again, very different from in english. Though, to be fair, her reaction makes a little more sense. So, there totally had to have been some Scooby doo or Looney Tunes inspiration in that pinball chase, right? "Don't think those are the right words." To quote Krillin in DBZA: "Honestly, that's always been pretty vague. Usually, you just gather the balls and then out pops the magic dragon." "Shenron looks like he's in pain." 10,000 years will give you such a crick in the neck.....this is what I get for typing my comments while y'all are talking. Glad Bethany made the same joke.

That pinball thing was the most fillery filler I've ever seen on Dragon Ball ๐Ÿคฃ

For sure ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

J Sal

Except Daphnee would pull up a middle finger like bulma did lol

Jeffrey F

It aired in 2001, I'm fairly certain.

Jason Rogue

This felt like a Scooby-Doo episode, like the vibes felt "spooky" with the music and themes and everything. Pilaf for sure would make a great Scooby-Doo villain then lol. Yep, the wish will be the next episode, and it's gonna be an amazing wish for sure lol

J Sal

I thought it was 2002 or 2003, after the original DBZ run

J Sal

2. i always figured that was the case but i never looked deep into it lol, but the finger does put it into perspective

Some differences of the dub compared to the sub and manga for this episode: 1) 4:19 The joke Mai makes here is different between the dub, sub, and manga. Dub: You can't trust a short person. Sub: Pilaf says,"They don't 'look' like they have any balls." Mai says, "Perhaps they are between that man's legs?". Pilaf tells her that he doesn't appreciate crude humor. (I'm not adding that to the counter) Manga: This one's the most elaborate. It's the same as the sub, but as she's apologizing, Mai holds up a stick with a piece shit on it as a crude reference to Dr. Slump. Pilaf gets angry and proceds to say "ESPECIALLY NOT DR. SLUMP REFERENCES! After all, SOME manga creators strive to make their work dignified and refined. If you think we'll pander to our audience's shameful love of 'pee pee kaka' humor simply to boost the sales of this Dragon Ball comic... then you are sorely mistaken!" 2) 8:08 Instead of shit talking the Pilaf Gang like she does in the dub, she instead tells the Pilaf Gang "I figured you were gonna strip me nudes and do a 'slurp slurp', a 'puff puff' or a ' pat pat', or even a 'grope grope'". Instead of being in shock from Bulma insulting them, the Pilaf Gang is baffled that someone could even think of such depraved things.

While we've never gotten an explanation as to how Pilaf met Shu and Mai, I think it's worth noting that a lot of Pilaf's more cruel moments are exclusive to the anime. The scenes with him using the mechanical arms to torture Shu and Mai, the scene were he's giving Mai a countdown to finish repairs, and the pinball moment in this episode were never in the manga.

JT

Just asany assumed Frieza was a girl in the early days. Since Linda Young and Chris Ayres all had a feminine voice for Frieza. That and Frieza had black nails and lipstick.

Jason Rogue

Could be Bulma assumes Puar is a girl based on the voice.

Cynergy

I do wonder why Shu and Mai are so loyal to Pilaf, as someone who hasnโ€™t read the manga, it baffles me they would follow Pilaf lol all in all another fun episode .

Cynergy

So, Puar is a boy, but we hear Bulma call him a girl when she shouts are Oolong to help. "OOLONG HELP HER!" So, either the VA didn't know or they made Puar a boy later on in the series.

Jason Rogue

OGDB pronounces it Kamehameha (ka-may-ha-may-ha) while later on in the end of OGDB they start pronouncing it the way we're all used to. It isn't the official way since the dub for Z came out first then later on OGDB came out. I personally pronounce it the way we're used to unless I add the wave at the end of it.

Jason Rogue

23:38 No, the OGDB dub mispronounces it ๐Ÿ˜†. I'm not too petty about that type of thing, but don't go thinking for a moment that's the "right" way. The way you've been hearing characters say "Kamehameha" up until now outside of OGDB is correct. I'm also now realizing that the Patreon comment you were probably referring to was Shadowpunch's, which is ironic bc that was him saying that he didn't like how the dub says it lmao. This is ur fault Shadow.

JT

This dub came out in 2001, so yes, it definitely could be an Airplane reference.

Jason Rogue

Pilaf could make a fairly good Danganronpa villain. /j
