How am I just realizing that Oolong was complaint that his boxers were chafing, and then when he gets the new underwear, he immediately puts them on… his head Also anyone else getting Dalek vibes from pilaf during the “Exterminate! Exterminate!” scene?

victoria t

you'll should watch hunter x hunter yall would love it

Elijah Wilson

This show starts to get significantly better from here out. Can't wait.

Chad Mancillas

Implied to be one? Mate, Goku transforms under the full moon. What more do you need?

Jason Rogue

That's why i said (even if unintentional) i knew that he just wanted the Ozaru to be a stand alone transformation originally but nowhere in the series does Ozaru look like a werewolf or is implied to be one. I get what you mean though.

REDE

Love the knowledge drop- thank you! 🙏

Bethany and Ken

hahaha, very fair point!

Bethany and Ken

Hahaha, so true!

Bethany and Ken

So they definitely are girl's panties- I knew it!

Bethany and Ken

I agree with you about how nonsensical it is for him to be bothered by them making story connections. It's only the natural and most logical thing to do if you're watching a show. Although he is right about Toriyama originally intending for the Great Ape transformation to be just a transformation, like the werewolf. This is just the tip of the iceberg on that depressing & dark feeling of this show in a small moment that you guys felt. You haven't seen nothing yet, just wait this show will really surprise you later on I PROMISE! By the time you finish this entire series, you will see why some purest debate that OG Dragon Ball is the best of Dragon Ball. This show is a roller coaster.

Asuka Yousei 妖精帝國

Yeah since the whole Saiyan thing wasn't thought of in DB, Goku doesn't realize he's the one who killed Grandpa Gohan until Vegeta transforms into a Great Ape

Austin Collier

In a sense, I suppose it is. The only other times would've been in DBZA and DBZ Kakarot.

JT

Is this there first time seeing the full great ape transformation in show?

Credit where it's due; they say dream big, and Pilaf definitely dreams big. Plus, in his imagination, the people all seem happy and actually love him as a ruler, so he doesn't seem interested in being a total tyrant. Aww, Japanese Goku is so cute. He doesn't care about saving anyone, he was more fascinated by the existence of a dragon and really wanted to meet Shenron. Yeah, I already knew this one, but in Japanese, it's not "comfortable" underwear he wished for, but a pair of girl's panties. Also, now you have more context for "The World's Strongest Abridged," when Oolong says, "Panties, gonna wish for panties." 9:15 This music! This music haunts me! Fun Fact: this is the music that places on the menu of the blue box DVDs, and if you don't hit anything it will just play....on loop...forever (just like all DVDs of the time). As brutal as they are towards the dogs...still not as brutal as the two villain dogs in Oliver and Company. "No! All that food for Goku!" As if he won't just eat it off the ground without batting an eye. "He's got a psychotic laugh." Chuck Huber's performance as Pilaf is great....oh god, and you'll hear Chuck again soon, since FMA Brotherhood is winning the poll. Can't wait for THAT episode. Man, funny to think how inconsequential that room will be in the future against Goku's strength, eh? "No, toast. French toast." Nah, they'll be like that coffee he just poured, French Roast. Yep. That's the moment I was waiting for. The realization of Gohan's fate. But also, for a first appearance and reveal of the Oozaru, this is pretty sick. "Even the writer is frightened out of his wits! He had no idea at all!" Thank you, Japanese narrator. Oh good, the true star of the show made his appearance right at the end.

DementisXYZ

Fun to see the origin of all these things that contribute to the modern dragon ball story, though. Even if it wasn't intended at the time, Goku was written to be a strange kid with unnatural strength even without training (or only Gohan's I guess). Adding the Ozaru, the tail, Bulma's "No way this kid is from earth" comment, and other things I'm probably forgetting about, definitely served as unintentional building blocks for the greater story.

Serpent King

They never watched the Saiyan Saga - Cell Saga of Kai. Also I fail to understand why them acknowledging foreshadowing (even if unintentional) is a problem for you. You keep saying they don't have to bring up Saiyans or Z/Super. Why are you bothered by them making connection between Toriyama's original take on Goku vs how he changed him overtime. Toriyama is also the one who made Z and Goku a Saiyan. Last one, where did you get the werewolf thing because Great Ape/Ozaru looks nothing like werewolf.

REDE

Definitely a great episode lore-wise, and yep the VERY FIRST wish of the franchise is on a pair of panties, you gotta love Dragon Ball for that lol. And on a side note Ken I love that jacket, definitely looks badass!

J Sal

I'd think Goku could piece together stuff said by his Grandpa about the monster and evidence, such as his Grandpa's crushed dead body to make the connection that it must've been the monster his Grandpa was always talking about

whis101

That makes sense.

Cynergy

I always interpreted it as Goku had found Gohan's body crushed to death and managed to piece things together from there, since Gohan already warned him about the Great Ape's existence. The kid can be slow in some areas, but he's not completely braindead.

JT

“They’re really dragging this out” could pretty much sum up the whole of the DB series 😂 the dark reveal of how Grandpa Gohan dies is very sad, although im puzzled as to how Goku knew a monster killed his grandpa since he tends to forget what hes done after he transforms into an Oozaru.

Cynergy

The first Great Ape transformation, it was meant to just be a werewolf transformation. Nothing about the Saiyan bloodline, as that was thought of as soon as Toriyama started working on Z. I'm surprised you didn't know that Goku was responsible for the death of his grandfather, then again y'all are just as forgetful as I am. It was brought up during the Saiyan Saga when Vegeta goes Great Ape. Unless y'all didn't catch that which is understandable. Goku was referencing OGDB so, you didn't have any knowledge about it.

Jason Rogue

Lol you just know that if this were Z, we'd be in this castle for at least 10 more episodes.

Serpent King

So, Oolong's wish originally is for a young girl's panties, hence why they are just panties. To censor this they changed it to the most comfortable pair of underwear. So Oolong is still a big ol pervert. Though that ad lib about his boxers chafing did fit and added more context as to why he'd make that wish.

Jason Rogue

20:27 In Yamcha's defense, this is a world where anthropomorphic talking animal people, shapeshifting pigs and cats, little fiendish fellas like Pilaf, dinosaurs, and regular ass humans all coexist with each other. Very difficult to nail down what should really be called "strange" in the Dragon World.

JT

Ball Joke Counter: 12 For Oolong showing his junk after changing back here (3:25).

JT

As a few others and I have said before, Goku’s Saiyan heritage was not intended by Toriyama until he began writing the Saiyan Saga. Thus, the Great Ape form began as a combination of both werewolf mythos and yet another reference to Sun Wukong, who could transform into a larger and fiercer ape to combat more dangerous enemies.

JT

Oolong the hero. There have been many fan what-if stories and discussion videos speculating on what would’ve happened had Pilaf managed to get his wish granted. While there are many different ways you could take the hypothetical depending on what exactly Pilaf would get from Shenron, just about everyone agrees that the little guy’s reign would only last until Raditz shows up.

JT

Shenron was inspired by the Chinese mythological dragon of the same name, “Shenlong” (which is what some DB media to him as). “Shenlong” is Chinese for “god dragon” or “divine dragon”, and was said to be the master of storms and rainfall. While I don’t believe the original Shenlong was able to grant wishes, many stories in Chinese folklore told of dragons possessing magical pearls that could do so.
