OG Dragon Ball 27 Full Reaction

Honestly, surprised the title didn't elicit any concern from either of you. "He does like to nap." Yeah, but we all know there's one thing he loves even more (two, if you count fighting)... "Well done, Bulma." It is a genius move, knowing his true love. That said, does that count of fight interference? "Side boat." Oh no, does that make Bulma a side piece? And there's the first of "Bulma abuses Oolong during a tournament." If you remember the Trunks vs Goten fight, she carries that tradition on for a loooong time. So many references to him, I'd say that Bacterian PTSD has settled in y'all well. "O-o-o-o-o-h no." The genuine concern in Ken's voice there. Even if exaggerated, a very nice delivery. "Getting Super Jacked, that's his plan." Jacked E. Chun? Seeing Bulma cry like that makes me think...it's not until I go back and rewatch OG DB that I remember just how much I love Goku and Bulma's relationship. Whether it turned out romantic or platonic, it was always legitimately good. "That would suck so bad." Yeah, I am curious how it went in Japan during the original airing for anyone who didn't read the manga. In the US, we'd already had up through partway of the android saga of Z before OG even started, so we were fairly certain Goku wasn't gonna be dead there.

There was something about the anticipation, right?

Bethany and Ken

Definitely one of the best episodes in this tournament arc! I actually do remember how this match ended, but I COMPLETELY forgot the great ape segment of it, so it took me by surprise. And yep Bethany, having to wait a week to see what happens is what so many of us growing up on television had to go through. One example, I'll never forget watching the TMNT 2003 series on Sat mornings and they spammed "to be continued..." on the most intense part at the end of every episode and it drove me nuts! I really miss those days though...

J Sal

Same!

J Sal

He used sleepy boy against the bird guy, he used lightning flash on some random fighter that Tien knocked out while he had him immobilized.

Chad Mancillas

Yep also the sleepy boy got used in ToP in super! He used it on the eagle guy but he shocked himself to keep from falling asleep.

I really love how well this show sets up little plot points and saves them for later episodes as "oh yeah right" moments. Having Goku get his tail back when he was fighting Giran only for him to turn into a Great Ape during his showdown with Roshi in the finals was a great way of subverting expectations within what information we are given a each episode plays out. Akira Toriyama was great as making twists and turns to help the readers/viewers develop intrigue and keep watching/reading to see what will happen next. As someone who grew up watching each episode once a day for 5 days a week after school on Toonami, this cliffhanger drove me crazy since they aired it on a Friday afternoon. This meant I had to wait a few days to find out if whether or not Goku is going to survive that Kamehame Wave. That's great that you remembered Roshi using the Sleepy Boy and Evil Containment Wave techniques from the Tournament of Power. Roshi did use that Thunder Shock Surprise Attack as well in the Tournament of Power against the bird guy (I forgot his name) from Universe 4. I'm glad you're enjoying OG Dragon Ball so far. There's certain episodes I really look forward to seeing your reactions when we get to them!

Steven

Yeah, Goku let him charge up because he’s very curious by nature. Like when he lectured 17 for interrupting the universe 2 fighters’ transformations.

Dorian Cantu

Cant wait for them to get to the juicy stuff! we're almost there!

Asuka Yousei 妖精帝國

28:40 The reason as to why Roshi used the Thunder Shock Surprise against Goku's grandpa is never told. All things considered, I think it's safe to assume that Toriyama had Roshi say this just to build up the power behind the technique and suggest just how impressive Grandpa Gohan was.

JT

Roshi used the lightning surprise attack to take someone out in the tournament of power as well! (He didn't charge it for nearly as long tho lol)

Kami_Psy

Yea alot of anime suffer from this especially the older ones.

Knight Spearhead

27:24 "Why does Goku let him charge up?" This is something that comes up constantly in a lot of Shonen anime series that are adapted from manga, not just Dragon Ball. It's usually due to the episode trying to fill it's run time while also creating dramatic effect. Since manga portrays these big impressive attacks with nothing more than a handful of panels, there's not much reference as to how long it actually takes to perform said attacks "in-universe". So, anime adaptations opt to drag them out a bit to make them look more impressive (while also allowing the episode to fulfill its time slot). But removed from that context, there is also the idea that you wouldn't want to approach someone who's winding up a technique that you know absolutely nothing about. Put yourself in Goku's shoes. The old man you're fighting is gathering up a lot of energy, and is about to hit you with an attack so powerful he's only had to use on your badass martial artist grandpa. Do you bank on the idea of rushing in to stop this attack that you have no idea as to how fast it can be unleashed onto you?

JT

24:52 Roshi used the Thunder Shock Surprise a couple times in DBS. Once on Yajirobe during the T.o.P recruitment arc, and once more during the T.o.P itself while fighting a U3 fighter.
