2025-05-26 21:09:28 +0000 UTCI started watching FMAB about a month ago and am up to e17 or so now. This episode was absolutely soul-crushing to watch, when realization strikes over what the alchemist Tucker had done in his quest for knowledge and power. What the Elric brothers did that starts the series was done for a positive reason (they wanted their mom back), they were just young and inexperienced which led them to breaking the primary rule of alchemy and making a very unwise choice, they did not understand the outcome of their actions -- but what Tucker does here is purposeful and with active disregard of the welfare of those he was supposed to protect and care for. He actively sacrificed them on the altar of his own desire and ambition. The show makes it even worse by making those characters endearing and lulling us into a false sense of hope. It does reinforce how the Elric brothers have a delicate line to walk, to find and hone the skill they need to restore their bodies without falling into darkness themselves. It really drives home how obsessive and degrading the quest for such alchemical power can be, in terms of sapping one's humanity. While a bit frightening, Scar is pretty cool and has his own backstory. I find him an interesting character. I still kind of laugh when I hear Watts' voice (from RWBY) come out of Armstrong's mouth. Two totally different characters.
