The term 'solarization' has been used in photography since the mid 19th century, describing the effect produced by images that were overexposed in bright sunlight in camera. When the effect was recreated later in the darkroom it was called 'pseudo-solarization' or the 'Sabatier Effect'. The technique is considered to have been 'perfected' by Man Ray, after his darkroom assistant, Lee Miller, accidentally discovered the effect in Man Ray's darkroom. The effect has been described in this way: "Partial image reversal produced by brief exposure to white light of a partly developed silver halide image."

We are not much into photographic gimmickry or trick techniques, but sometimes we have a moment. Here is a solarized image of our dear friend Kelsey made in the darkroom from an 8x10 negative.
