I think it shows in even in him being a Christian, there's always that slim chance that Norse is the accurate religion, and he won't go to an afterlife. He grabs on to the weapon as a final hope that he gets to go to Valhalla in case heaven doesn't exist, and I'd assume it's so he can see Canute again since that's what his final thoughts are. The doubt in Christianity in his final moments is set up by the Priest at the beginning of the episode.

Yeah if I'm not mistaken I think Im only talked about his concerns about following this group of people back in episode 5 and only got to talk about it again in episode 14, so yeah you're 100% right that these episodes are great at reminding you about the group's dark nature.

What I like about Ep14 and 15 is that they both remind you of that darker side to Askeladd. Ever since Thors' death, he's been portrayed in a likeable way, at least to me. He's a father figure to Thorfinn, even if it's very much complicated and he can crack a joke or two. Then the stuff in Ep.14 sort of gives you a reminder of what group we are following and then in this he orders Ragnar's death which I can see his reasons behind it, even if it's fucked up. But that face he makes when he denies Ragnar's last request will always stick with me. He can be a very cold man, it gives me the chills.

So you do mention Ragnar grabbing for his sword in his final moments, but I almost wish you'd have shared more about what you think the significance of that was. I'm not totally sure myself, but given what we know about the Norse custom of needing to die with a weapon in one's hands to be given a chance at Valhalla, I thought it was peculiar since Ragnar is himself a Christian (or at the least practices for Canute's sake). It's an interesting dichotomy to the premise of a "true warrior" not needing a sword as well.
