2022-06-08 14:33:51 +0000 UTCFinally got around to this. This episode is probably top 2 of the season for me. It's not only visually one of the best, it also has more great content for Askeladd. Love the way we switch between the present and past with his narration on top of it all. I really like your observation about Thorfinn's stagnation being more obvious with all these big players around him. And yes the relationship between him and Askeladd is certainly complicated. I like that Yukimura didn't go the route of them starting to form a father-son relationship and Thorfinn starting to give up on getting revenge. Yes he is a father figure, but he also uses him. It sort of leaves it in that awkward in between state that allows for lots of discussion.

2022-06-06 14:24:28 +0000 UTCVinland saga was not anime of the year if you base it of this popularity contest that are made each year, which of course, they are just that, a popularity contest, not to show the highest quality of anime in that year. Demon slayer won back then, which, I guess if we are literally talking about animation, then yeah sure, it is anime of the year, it is insane the production it has, but writing quality?, story?, literally everything else that makes art good?, not at all. Vinland Saga would never be anime of the year because it its too outside of what is popular, wich is shonen. and this gets worse in Season 2, wich goes so against what makes the average shonen that many people might actually hate it haha. Season 2 in the manga its a masterpiece, the anime might be as well, but it wont be for everyone, not for the average shonen viewer that's for sure.

I am actually upset that you watched this early in your anime journey lol I have times when I watched something amazing, it takes some time before I can stop comparing it to others. HxH 2011, Steins Gate and Vinland Saga did that to me

2022-06-04 06:20:21 +0000 UTCVinland Saga came out in 2019. I wouldn't say it was the clear AOTY, as there was some steep competition that year (aot S3 part 2, Mob Psycho 100 season 2, The Promised Neverland, etc.), but it's definitely up there.
