Maybe you've already found this trivia, but I believe Neil Gaiman has said that he initially started writing this episode before it was announced David Tennant was leaving. Then when a draft was finished it was originally supposed to be in season 5, but got pushed back for budget and production reasons. Like you, I absolutely love Matt's performance in this, but it's interesting to imagine what it would have been like with Tennant.
