Interestingly for ages when I watched this episode I thought the room with Amelia waiting in it was the doctor’s room. I thought it was like a manifestation of all the people who look up to him and all the people he has let down and that was what his deepest fear was. But I do love this episode and I love Rita. Such a standout one off character.

2022-09-09 12:33:51 +0000 UTCAt the end of The Eleventh Hour, the Doctor said: “Amy Pond, there's something you'd better understand about me, because it's important, and one day your life may depend on it. I am definitely a madman with a box!” I think this episode is a callback. The Doctor even tells Amy, “I knew this would happen…. I’m not a hero. I really am just a madman with a box.” I can’t think of another example off hand, but when I first watched Doctor Who, I had the recurring sense that the writers got ideas for new episodes while watching the older ones.
