2022-10-06 10:46:28 +0000 UTCAh, so you already knew she's a future companion called Clara when watching this. Yeah, after 10 years it's hard to avoid all the spoilers. When I was first watching this episode back when it originally aired, I guessed she's a Dalek as soon as the Doctor asked her "where do you get the milk?" while he was on the ship above the planet. Moffat is really good at placing subtle hints like this in his episodes. But also I had intentionally ignored news about the season, so I didn't know Jenna Coleman would be a companion, even though it had been announced. I also didn't know when Amy and Rory are leaving.

Also, yeah, something I do appreciate about Moffat is that he does actually listen to criticism and tries to change how he approaches things. It doesn't always work but the attempt is there. It's definitely something that comes into play more the longer his run goes on. Example I know of off the top of my head is the criticisms of the very few number of female writers/directors/crew in DW (don't know why only Moffat got flack for this when RTD also had this issue), so Moffat starting searching specifically for more women & a diverse team, some of whom became staple names in the show. This episode also has a pretty good example of this besides Amy/Rory; the set-up. Or, rather, lack thereof. S5/6 - 6 in particular - caught flack for its focus on the long term storyline and being 'too complicated'. So, there's not really a big mystery in this episode to hold onto. Maybe if you know about Jenna Coleman being in the show later, but plenty of main character actors have played roles before in the show. Which, yeah, is also why it feels like a mid-series episode like Im said. Every series opener before this introduced either a new character or kicked off a major plot for the series. Exception being Partners in Crime, but that always felt like a re-introduction to Donna as a proper companion. AOTD doesn't have that. I'm writing way too much LOL but this show is something special to me.

2022-10-06 06:29:14 +0000 UTCIt's interesting to see that Moffat specifically responded to criticism of the lack of character consequences in S6. I wonder if that affected how he wrote in the future beyond just this episode. Also if Im is reading this, I agree with the notion of supplementary 50th material. Personally I'm not that big on An Adventure in Space and Time, but Night of the Doctor is a must for me.

2022-10-06 06:06:27 +0000 UTCNiche enough of a nerd thing that most people won't know, sounds like it could pass for a normal name AND Jenna Coleman is pretty af, it's the perfect fit ๐

2022-10-06 06:00:56 +0000 UTCIn regards to the Amy/Rory B plot this episode, iirc Moffat has said that this was in response to his handling of the post-Good Man Goes to War character arcs for 6B. There were criticisms, and certainly ones he agreed with, that he could've taken more time to show both their grief at essentially losing their own child. But... yeah, not a fan of how it's approached here. Miscommunication drama ๐คข While I'm not a fan of the Amy/Rory drama, and not really a Dalek fan myself, this is still an episode I really enjoy because of Oswin. Jenna Coleman is gorgeous and seeing your first reaction to her in DW was definitely a treat! Her and Matt Smith have such amazing chemistry that they don't need to even be in the same room. I could watch these two make flirty banter for hours. Something I'm curious about, since s7 is the one before the 50th, do you have any plans on watching the supplement 50th content? In particular, there's a docudrama made by the BBC on the making of the very first episodes way back in the 60's that you might appreciate. It's called 'An Adventure in Space and Time'. Definitely worth checking out for anyone interested in the show.

2022-10-06 05:58:03 +0000 UTCThe excitement on this man's face from seeing Jenna Coleman, haha. You speak for all of us. Really glad you enjoyed her performance, she's even better with Capaldi

2022-10-06 05:37:14 +0000 UTCThis was the season I first started watching Doctor Who. Well, it was after the finale, which meant that the first Doctor Who episode I experienced at the same time as everyone else was the 50th. A lot of nostalgia for this one, and originally when I planned to join the patreon but I couldn't resist after A Good Man Goes to War haha
